Bunge Completes Acquisition of IOI Loders Croklaan
With the acquisition of 70% ownership interest in IOI Loders Croklaan, the newly formed oils and fats organization ‘Bunge Loders Croklaan’ adopted Loders Croklaan’s Sustainable Palm Oil Policy. This is a so-called NDPE policy: no deforestation, no development on peat, and free and fair labor practices. Increasing the traceability of its supply chain and collaborating in projects that help advance sustainability across the palm oil industry are key objectives of the newly combined company.

The Bunge Loders Croklaan sustainability organization is now fully integrated into Bunge’s global sustainability team and the global value chain is tasked with ensuring traceable, transparent and sustainable sourcing in compliance with Bunge Loders Croklaan’s sustainable sourcing policies.

Our Quarterly Story: Peatland Roadshow
Program lead: Kaixiang Chin, Sustainability Manager Bunge Loders Croklaan Asia
Bunge Loders Croklaan organized a peatland roadshow in the Lower Kinabatangan region, Malaysia. The goal is to leverage the relationship between growers and millers by providing the best management practices on peat for existing plantations to all FFB suppliers. Sustainability Manager Kaixiang Chin led this roadshow together with the NGO Global Environment Center (GEC).
Kaixiang comments on his experience: “The two and half day training proved to be very successful. The objective of the Peatland Roadshow and Technical Workshops is to empower the growers. The ‘in-field learning’ sessions were held by GEC’s leading peat experts, who provided all growers working on the same peat dome with useful insights to work together in securing extraordinary biodiversity in the region. The main focus is on techniques to maintain effective water table management and information was provided on the hydrological nature of peat lands. The Lower Kinabatangan region contains the largest remaining forested floodplain in Sabah. The recommendations shared will lower the impact on the environmentally sensitive areas in the region. Additionally, participants received technical support from Proforest, a NGO that specializes in certification requirements. They provided advice and guidance on how to comply with the RSPO/MSPO requirements.”

Expert Blog: Smallholders Support Program
Program lead: Jaideep Singh, Sustainability Manager Bunge Loders Croklaan Malaysia
Bunge Loders Croklaan works with IOI, Kerry Group, NGO Wild Asia and the Fortuna Palm Oil Mill in Sabah, Malaysia, to implement a 3-year Smallholders Support Program. This program supports the inclusion of smallholders into our supply chain and will boost the productivity of small farmers, with a farm size up to 500Ha, by helping them implement sustainable agricultural practices. It also guides our directly sourced third-party supplying mills in achieving staged compliance with the Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Policy and helps them prepare for certification requirements.
Jaideep, responsible for ensuring the smooth roll out of the program, shares his thoughts: “There are approximately 5,000 smallholders in the Sabah region. In the coming three years, our ambition is to support mills in the Telupid, Beluran and Kinabatangan surroundings, and make RSPO/MSPO certification feasible for them. We will go mill by mill and increase the frequency throughout the duration of the program. Smallholders will benefit from cost reductions and a gradual increase in yield and millers are ensured of a steady supply, better control of FFB and a higher extraction rate.

He continues, “It is important to know that smallholders account for forty percent of the total worldwide palm oil production. This shows how crucial their role is in the supply chain and underlines the importance of the Smallholders Support Program. The program is designed to drive collaboration, not only between the different partners, but also to increase the number of interactions between suppliers, mill owners and palm growers. With the collective resources and expertise of Kerry Group, Wild Asia, Fortuna Palm Oil Mill, IOI and Bunge Loders Croklaan we can bring real change. Through this partnership, we will have a positive impact on the traceability and sustainability of the entire supply chain, but most importantly, it empowers communities and workers within the supply chain. Helping smallholders get their sustainable practices in place will increase their productivity and increase their income.”
