Student Veterans of America Announces Fall 2017 Scholarship Winners


Recipients demonstrate the best in academic excellence and diversity of student veterans

Washington, D.C. – Student Veterans of America (SVA), in partnership with Google, Raytheon and MUFG Union Bank, N.A., announced 21 student veteran recipients of Fall 2017 scholarships today. The winners went through an extremely competitive application process to become SVA-recognized scholars.
 
Since 2011 SVA, has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarship support to more than 200 student veterans.
 
SVA partnered with Google to provide eight $10,000 scholarships to student veterans pursuing computer science degrees through the Google-SVA Scholarship program. Scholarship recipients will also be attending Google's 2018 Summer Annual Scholars' Retreat.

"Google’s education and scholarship programs aim to inspire and help students become future leaders in computing and technology by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from entering these fields,” said Sarah Safir, Specialist, Tech Student Development Programs at Google, Inc. “Partnering with Student Veterans of America allows us to support student veterans in their academic careers and beyond. Google is proud to support the veteran community through the Google-SVA Scholarship."
 
The winners of the Google-SVA Scholarship are:

  • Keith Bocian, University of Montana
  • Steffen Camarato, University of Central Florida
  • Anne Cocos, University of Pennsylvania
  • Calvin Evans, University of Washington
  • Rex Ferrer, College of Charleston
  • Mario Salazar, University of California - Riverside
  • Daniel Votipka, University of Maryland
  • Frances Woods, University of Nebraska – Omaha
SVA also partnered with Raytheon to provide five $10,000 scholarships to student veterans pursuing engineering or closely-related degrees through the Raytheon-SVA Scholarship program. SVA and Raytheon recognize the tremendous potential that student veterans have to fill the critical skills gap in the U.S. and usher in a new generation of technological advancements.

"Through the Raytheon-SVA Scholarship program, we’re helping student veterans earn an undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM-related field,” said Pam Erickson, Vice President, Global Brand and Corporate Citizenship at Raytheon. “It’s an honor to recognize and support these individuals as they become America’s next generation of STEM leaders.”
 
The winners of the Raytheon-SVA Scholarship are:
  • Derek Bellanca, University of Texas - Dallas
  • Derek DeMaa, Liberty University
  • Jonathan Irizarry, Campbell University
  • Thomas Mangan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Son Pham, University of Texas at Arlington
Furthermore, SVA partnered with MUFG Union Bank to provide eight $10,000 scholarships to student veterans who have shown commitment toward making a positive impact in their communities. Special consideration was given to those pursuing degrees in accounting, finance, human resources and/or information technology management.

Student Veterans of America continues to stand out as a high impact organization with a track record of success serving transitioning student veterans.”

  • Brian Speh, University of California - Davis
  • Michael Vollmer, University of Denver
  • Nicole Zook, Governors State University
