Bay Area native Sophie Huet began her love affair with the clarinet in the 5th grade. From age six, she’d played the piano, which placed her a year ahead in her elementary school band. But, why the clarinet? What attracted her to the single reed woodwind she has been mastering for almost 25 years?
“I didn’t want to play the flute because all the girls played that and I didn’t want to play the trumpet because all the boys played that one... the clarinet seemed gender neutral.”
It was in college, pursuing a dual degree program in English and Music at the University of Michigan, that Sophie first explored new music in any real way and “really fell in love with playing pieces that had not been played often, or ever.” During her senior recital when preparing and performing the Berio Sequenza is when she first really began to grasp the possibilities.
“I really like trying to make strange sounds on the clarinet or doing things on purpose that a beginner does by accident.”
