Dear friends and colleagues,

only two and a half months to go for submitting projects to this year's competition. A lot of you have already registered from literally all over the globe: It is so great to be in touch with artists from e.g. Chile, China or Nigeria. And from the previous editions we know that most of the participates will join during the second half of the process. So we are looking forward to an enormous bunch of projects - will we be be able to break the record of 450 that participated in 2015?

If you have not registered yet, please do so in order to familiarize with the application form and collect the information that is necessary for the submission.
The jury and we are looking forward to the evaluation of interesting works that we already received and the ones that will come in until the end of June.

And behind the scenes we are working on wonderful opportunities for the winning projects: Music Theatre NOW wants to go EAST... More details will hopefully be revealed soon.

Wether you experience problems with the registration, the application form or you have any question concerning the competition, we are more than happy to help. Please contact us at mtnow@iti-germany.de

All the best
Chris

"In several team sports, matches are played in two halves. Half-time (also written halftime or half time) is the name given to the interval between the two halves of the match. Typically, after half-time teams swap ends of the field of play, in order to reduce any advantage that may be gained from wind or a slope to the playing surface, for example."

What kind of work?

The call for applications by Music Theatre NOW is not limited to a specific genre. You can enter works of all forms and types:
Operas or music theatre large and small, works made for large opera houses, or works created by a single person for tiny venues.
We especially want to encourage the creators of aesthetically innovative performance or dramatic works, which explore the notion of music theatre, to submit.
All kinds of works, which demonstrate a new development in the genre, be it in score, text and/or staging, should be entered.
And also works by so-called non-academic composers and works without a written score will be taken into account.

Special attention will be given to works, whose musical and theatrical vocabulary originates outside of the Western European tradition. As a guideline, for those regions in which categories such as music theatre or opera are not defined: all interdisciplinary work will be considered, in which music plays a dominant role.

How different the works of previous winners were in style, aesthetic or general approach you can find out on our WEBSITE.

For example IL BALLO DELLE INGRATE by Letizia Renzini,
INVISIBLE CITIES from Los Angeles
or Australia's SHIFTING GROUND.

"Nobel Prize for Theatre" awarded to music theatre maker -

The Swiss director, composer and musician Christoph Marthaler is awarded The International Ibsen Award 2018.

Marthaler (born in 1951) has worked at theatres and opera houses across Europe and is best known for his unique stage language in the intersection between musical theatre and stylised, physical theatre.

"Christoph Marthaler has been one of the world's most important and influential theatre directors for more than 30 years. He has created his own unique stage language that paves the way for new insight into interpersonal relationships and has inspired a large international audience," says Per Boye Hansen, head of the jury for the International Ibsen Award. Boye Hansen acclaims Marthaler as a strong source of inspiration for young theatre aspirants around the world.

"His contribution to the development of theatre as an art form has been considerable and the entire jury is enthusiastically united behind the presentation of the world's most important theatre award," Boye Hansen adds.

Celebrate: International Dance Day April 27th

In 1982 the Dance Committee of ITI founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. The intention of the International Dance Day Message is to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance.

International Dance Day Message 2018 - Ohad Naharin, Israel
Choreographer, artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company, creator of the GAGA movement language.

"[...] At its best, dance can be sublime, even if far from perfect. We need to resist the conservative and conventional thinking that has roots in much of dance education and training, and let go of old ideas for new, better ones. And we must always remember to dance a little every day...
And we must always remember to dance a little every day...and never in front of a mirror."
