Growing local food
Now that it is Spring, we are at the 32nd Street Farmers Market in Waverly every Saturday from 7am - noon. Come by the Farm Alliance market stall, meet our farmers, buy some healthy local produce, and hear about the excellent work that our member farms are doing in communities throughout the city. By next month's newsletter, we will have an exciting announcement to share about a new addition to our Waverly market stall!
Growing new urban farmers
Education is one of our core values, and we are co-sponsoring the Cultivate Baltimore series to train the next class of farmers who want to grow food in Baltimore. Offered in partnership with Future Harvest-CASA, Real Food Farm, and UMD-Extension, these workshops meet roughly once a month from April-November.
Session One brought together trainers from Good Dog Farm and Real Food Farm (including Real Food Farm Manager and Farm Alliance board member Clayton Williams, pictured here), plus a donation of potting soil from Summer Creek Farm.
Workshops are $10 per session or $60 for the whole series. Scholarships are available to help defray the cost of the workshops.
Session 2: May 15, 4-7pm. Session 2 features Soil Health and Weed Management at Boone Street Farm. Come to this hands-on, on-farm workshop to learn how to assess and improve your farm’s soil and how to reduce weed pressure with speaker Dr. Andrew Ristvey, UMD Extension. Bring two cups of your soil or growth medium for a free pH and salinity test. To request a scholarship please email futureharvestcasa@gmail.com with the subject line “Cultivate Baltimore scholarship request.” Questions? Email futureharvestcasa@gmail.com .
Growing the next world
Our Double Dollars Cooking and Nutrition Demonstrations were a resounding success in March, with over a dozen workshops delivered in community centers and low-income housing developments. Our community partner, Holistic Wellness and Health, delivers these workshops in the community -- watch our Facebook page for added workshops to be held at our member farms throughout the spring and summer!

Interested in coming to more on-farm events? Many of our member farms have community events coming up this spring. Growing food for and in communities is a powerful thing, and you can feel that power when you visit a farm to help with weeding, attend a yoga class, feed the ducks and chickens, or simply taste a vegetable and enjoy the sunshine. Watch our Facebook page for upcoming events at your neighborhood Farm Alliance member farm.
