Orienteering Foundation newsletter

This email is sent to current, previous or potential future donors, or anyone interested in the work of the Orienteering Foundation, who has given permission for us to contact you.  We send similar e-mails periodically to keep you informed about recent developments in our activities.  Feel free to let us know if you find it useful or if you have suggestions for future content.  See below for contacts or just reply to this email.  If you know of anyone else who might be interested in our activities, they can sign-up here.

Trustee and Chair appointments

Duncan Archer and Neil Cameron were reappointed earlier this year for a further term as Trustees (Trustees are appointed for 3 year terms before possible reappointment).  Neil Cameron was also reappointed again as Chair (the Chair is appointed for one year at a time).  The full list of current trustees, chair and administrator can be found on the website here and below, and the website also now includes biographies and photos for the trustees.

Grants made

Recent grants have been awarded to:
  • Oliver O'Brien for enhancements to his Open Orienteering Map tool (report)
  • Glasgow University Orienteering Club to broaden the scope of their annual weekend training event
  • Aberdeen University Orienteering Club to assist with club development and recruitment of new members
  • Graham Gristwood for mapping of small areas in the Stirling area to assist with elite training
  • MAR Orienteering Club (MAROC) to support their Talent Squad “inspiration camp” (report)
A full list projects funded, and in many cases reports and photographs, can be found on the website here.

Applying for grants

The process for making grant applications and associated forms is on the website here.  Applications are considered after our quarterly application dates (31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December), but applications can be submitted at any time.

Proactive approach to grants

We would be interested in hearing from individuals, clubs or other organisations about projects or initiatives they would like to see us sponsoring or supporting.  There is no commitment that whoever proposes such a project needs to be involved in implementing it, although they would be involved if they wished to be.  As an example, the Trustees felt that there was demand for organising adult coaching sessions, particularly for those who were relatively new to orienteering, which led to the successful adult coaching day - see below.

GBR team fundraising

In 2017 we successfully raised over £10,000 towards with our "Fuel the GB team to WOC" campaign (see here).  This was very much welcomed by the GBR team members in bridging the gap between diminished funding from Sport England via British Orienteering, and the cost of competing for their country.  Due to continued shortfalls in funding, we plan to run a similar campaign for WOC 2018.  Once again it will be short and focused campaign, launching in June - watch this space.  Also see the recently launched GBR team website here to keep abreast of what our top athletes are up to.

Adult coaching day

The Foundation supported an adult coaching day at Tarn Hows in the Lake District on Saturday 10 February 2018.  Well over 100 people applied to attend.  Sadly the day saw very cold and snowy weather, but those who made it were either coached as individuals by Derek Allison who was assisted by Jo Cleary, or in club groups using the same controls but with their own training exercises.  Participants paid a small fee, and the cost to the Foundation was minimal, with Trustee effort restricted to supervising the excellent plans prepared by Derek.  We did a short survey of participants afterwards, and will be reviewing the results to decide whether the day should be repeated in future.  Any further feedback is welcome.

Charity Commission Governance Code

The Trustees have decided to commit to following the Charity Commission's recently published Governance Code for Smaller Charities.  This requires us to follow the code or publish an explanation of why we believe a particular provision is inappropriate for us.  Several of the Trustees are also Trustees of other Charities, so we have a lot of experience to guide us.  However, to avoid deflecting too much effort to this, we have agreed to tackle a section of the code at each future meeting and hope to complete our work over the next 12 months.  We hope this, together with our Trustee experience, will demonstrate that we are a well-run charity.

Donors and donations

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, or has recently started a regular donation.  We are happy to receive donations at any time or to discuss the work of the Foundation with potential new donors.  You can also help us by increasing awareness of the Orienteering Foundation by telling people about our funding possibilities, our web site, and encouraging them to donate.  Current donation methods include:
  • A bequest left in your will
  • Regular monthly or annual donation
  • Proceeds from fund-raising activity
  • A one-off donation
  • Donation of volunteer expenses: instead of ignoring expenses, claim them and give them to charity.  This method is giving the Foundation a useful source of further income, which is often boosted by Gift Aid.  It also ensures event organisers are aware of the true cost of staging events.  Please publicise this avenue for donation to anyone you know of who gets expenses for orienteering activity and might like to donate to us.  It's simple and straightforward using our web site, and can be anonymous if desired.
See here for more information about donating, including how to do it online.
