The dynamic 50 member Delaware State University Choir has been a substantial part of the University tradition since the inception of this historical black college-university founded in 1891.  This organization ranges from 60 to 80 voices in membership. The choir(s) performs for numerous community and university events including Convocation, Parent’s Day, Fall and Spring concerts, Tours and Commencement Exercises. The repertoire of these ensembles vary from Early Baroque to Classical and Romantic era choral and sacred works, to contemporary compositions in various genres; jazz, early and contemporary gospel, show tunes, and Broadway musicals.  The ensembles are also committed to preserving its heritage by singing the Afro-American Spiritual and other compositions by Afro-American composers.  Not limited or restricted to these genres, the choral ensembles are dedicated to exposing and preparing students for music careers of a vast number of professions.

The choir has performed for many distinguished occasions, including, but not limited to, having performed Handel’s “Messiah” with The Harlem Festival Orchestra at the prestigious Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware and a statewide presentation of Negro Spirituals written and conducted by the late composer/performer Jester Hairston with the University of Delaware. In addition, the choir collaborated with Temple University in the presentation of Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”

The choir is currently under the musical direction of Dr. Lloyd Mallory, Jr.  A native of Washington, DC, Dr. Lloyd Mallory currently serves as Asst. Chair of Mass Communications, Performing and Visual Arts and Director of Vocal Choral Activities at Delaware State University in Dover.  Dr. Mallory is also Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Colesville United Methodist Church.
