FOCUS ON HAEMOPHILIA
Hospital manager Dr Douglas Ross and Dr Yagalen Naidoo (chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the SA Haemophilia Foundation).

To mark Haemophilia Month in April, Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) private hospital embarked on a programme to raise awareness about the inherited bleeding disorder where the blood doesn't clot properly. People with haemophilia tend to bleed for a longer period, posing a hazard to their health without the appropriate treatment.

DIRECT FLIGHT BETWEEN DURBAN AND LONDON

Come October 29, a direct flight from Durban to London travelers will be launched. A  joint announcement was made in Durban morning by KZN MEC for economic development, tourism and environmental affairs and British Airways at a breakfast ahead of the Tourism Indaba that starts today. The new direct service will see three direct flights a week from Heathrow to the King Shaka International Airport. British Airways chairman and CEO Alex Cruz said he was confident the flight would lead to an improvement in the province’s tourism fortunes. About 10 000 passengers who currently fly indirectly between Durban and London via Johannesburg will now fly directly to Durban. This will drastically reduce travel times and costs, he said. OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO LAND DEBATE SUBMISSIONS

The parliamentary joint committee on constitutional review has so far received 140 000 written submissions about possible changes to land ownership rights and will request the National Assembly extend the deadline to report back by August 30, according to co-chairperson Vincent Smith. The written submissions and request for oral submissions opened on April 13 and will close on May 31 while the committee is left with the massive task of sifting through the genuine submissions and automated responses that some organisations encouraged their members to send repeatedly. The public participation phase by the joint constitutional review committee was scheduled to get underway at the end of May, after written submissions close, but due to the NCOP running two weeks behind parliament, members will need to be in the house to pass budget votes and Smith will propose that they begin on June 20. The committee will split into two, inland and coastal provinces and Smith says they have allocated four days for rural provinces such as Eastern Cape, KZN and Northern Cape, including one weekend day for those who are working to attend. Inland, smaller provinces will have three days of public hearings. “It’s a nightmare, it will take a lot of planning,” Smith said. (Fin24).

TELKOM RINGS OFF ON DISGRACED NKONKI

Telkom said yesterday it was terminating the services of Nkonki as joint auditor of the group. As a consequence, EY will be the sole auditor signing off Telkom’s annual financial statements for the year to end-March, after which EY will also retire as auditor for the group. PwC and SizweNtsalubaGobodo have been appointed as Telkom’s new joint external auditors for the financial year ending March 2019. Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu earlier cut ties with Nkonki, amid questions relating to its independence in relation to the auditing of certain Gupta companies. Nkonki has announced that it will go into voluntary liquidation. (BDLive)

X3 DRIVES BMW’S EXPORT HOPES

BMW South Africa has shipped its first production of X3 models which have been assembled at its Rosslyn plant for export markets, the company said yesterday. The German car manufacturer said more than 100 units of “proudly South African BMW cars” were on Friday transported by train to the port of Durban. Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, said a ZAR6.1 billion investment and the culmination of three years of hard work and planning made the milestone possible. The vehicles are destined for European markets. The production of the new generation BMW X3 replaced the 3-Series production which had been moved to Mexico. The Rosslyn plant in February 2018 produced the last of 1 191 604 BMW 3-Series cars built over five model generations and 35 years. (Fin24)

JSE TO TIGHTEN DISCLOSURE RULES

Africa‘s biggest securities exchange, the JSE, is crafting tighter disclosure rules for companies with listed debt instruments, combined with a greater focus on corporate governance to increase transparency. “Commentators are often critical why exchanges don’t catch or stop a fraud etc … what they (regulators) do is they require disclosures so people are informed before they make a decision to invest,” JSE CEO Nicky Newton-King said. “That’s why we are looking at disclosures for non-listed companies with debt securities as a means for investors, the media and interested shareholders to ask difficult questions.” She said the JSE was on a very clear path to become the best global platform in emerging markets. The JSE is already the top-20 capital market in the world with more than 160 companies listed on the its main JSE All-share index. It has a market capitalisation of ZAR11.7 trillion. (Moneyweb)

SHAREHOLDERS CHEER GRINDROD’S NASDAQ PLANS

Grindrod’s share price rose 1.5% to ZAR15 yesterday morning after it released further details on its plan to list its shipping division on Nasdaq with a secondary listing on the JSE. Grindrod shareholders will receive one share in the new company, Grindrod Shipping Holding, for every 40 Grindrod shares held. Grindrod Shipping Holdings issued an abridged pre-listing statement yesterday saying it planned to start trading on the JSE on June 19 under the ticker GSH. Its Nasdaq code will be GRIN. Monday’s statement says the face value of the shares once they start trading on Nasdaq is about US$16.82 (about ZAR210) each. Grindrod will unbundle its shipping division by issuing 19 million shares, valuing it at US$320 million. (BDLive)

ASPEN EXPANSION THE RIGHT MEDICINE FOR JOB MARKET

An additional 500 jobs will be created by JSE-listed Aspen Pharmacare’s new ZAR1 billion facility in Port Elizabeth, where the pharmaceutical manufacturer will produce specialised products for chronic conditions, including certain cancers. The official opening yesterday marked a shift for Aspen from commodity generics into specialised products with niche markets. The additional 500 jobs will add to the more than 2 000 jobs at the listed company’s flagship site in Port Elizabeth. Initial production at the facility is planned for Alkeran, Leukeran and Purinethol (treatment of late-stage cancers); Imuran (prevention of organ tissue rejection in liver and kidney transplants, as well as treatment of certain auto-immune diseases); and Benztropine (treatment of Parkinson’s disease). At full capacity, the facility is expected to produce about 3.6 billion tablets annually and package about 3 million bottles a month. It is anticipated that about 95% of these new products will be exported to target markets in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The first exports are expected to be to Europe, which was the first to give its regulatory approval. (BDLive)

ANGER MOUNTS OVER GIGABA’S BLINGING SPOUSE

Trade union federation Cosatu noted with "extreme disgust" that National Treasury spent more than ZAR870 000 on the travels of Malusi Gigaba's wife Norma during the period that he was finance minister. It called on president Cyril Ramaphosa to put a stop to the "government's addiction to bling". "This is an insult to workers. This is the same minister who gave us a VAT hike, fuel and [Road Accident Fund levy] hikes, a sugar-sweetened beverages tax and adjusted income tax brackets below inflation," Cosatu parliamentary coordinator Matthew Parks said. "Where was this austerity for the minister? What possible value did it have to workers to fly the minister's wife around the world?" asked Parks. "It may have been legal, but it is disgustingly immoral." (Fin24)

ECB FRETS OVER RISING TRADE PROTECTIONISM

The European Central Bank (ECB) warned that a rise in trade protectionism would undermine the global economy, and said the US would be among the worst-affected. The cautionary comments coincide with data showing factory orders in Germany unexpectedly slid for a third month in March, another sign of the weakness that’s dogged the eurozone economy since the start of the year. Separate reports showed investor confidence in the currency bloc fell for a fourth month and a retail gauge suggested that sales contracted for the first time in more than a year. The ECB has cited tariffs as one of its chief concerns as the institution’s policy makers edge toward the end of their stimulus programmes. (Fin24)

EU MOOTS MEASURES TO HALT STEEL DELUG

US steel tariffs have led to an increase in volumes on Europe’s steel market as some manufacturers divert their product to the European Union, the head of Germany’s steel association told a newspaper. "In the first three months (of 2018), imports from Russia rose by 139% from a year earlier, those from Turkey by 76%," daily Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung quoted Hans Juergen Kerkhoff yesterday. He urged the EU to quickly implement measures to prevent foreign steel from flooding the EU market, for instance by imposing its own quotas or tariffs. US president Donald Trump’s administration said in March it would impose tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminium in a bid to stanch imports from China, which it said have driven down prices and put US companies out of business. NESTLE COSIES UP TO STARBUCKS

Nestlé SA and Starbucks are joining forces to rejuvenate their coffee empires. The Swiss maker of Nescafe will pay the Seattle-based chain US$7.15 billion upfront in cash for the rights to sell Starbucks coffee products in supermarkets, restaurants and catering operations, the companies said yesterday. Nestlé will use the Starbucks brand in its Nespresso and Dolce Gusto capsule systems next year. The alliance underlines Nestlé’s efforts to capture more upscale java drinkers in the US, where the maker of Nespresso and Nescafe has been outpaced by JAB. The deal is Nestlé’s first tie-up with a major rival in coffee. Nestlé expects the deal to contribute positively to its earnings per share and organic growth targets from 2019.
