Reflecting: three different layers of Platform Design

In this week's post, we present a reflection on the three "social" layers that one needs to care about when designing platform strategies. We think that a platform shaper needs to always think about the individual, the relationship and... the ecosystem.

At the individual layer, one needs to design keeping in mind:
  • solving a problem in easier, cheaper, faster ways (providing convenience);
  • treating everyone as a producer (empowering potential).
At the relational layer, the aspects that count the most are:
  • reducing conflict of interest and fear, increase trust, mostly trough intermediation;
  • increasing the value of the interaction (non-zero sum) by generating perfect matches;
At the ecosystemic layer, one needs to design keeping in mind:
  • increasing the value of ecosystem’s commons, available to all participants;
  • reduce liabilities of the whole system and reduce risk of systemic collapse.

Matt Ward presents a 4 parts journey to plan the “correct” path and 7 platform problems to consider when your product is the platform. Interesting concepts to inspire our work on PDT.
Defensibility beyond Network Effects ↴
A good reality check on network and non-network effect.  Nfx are key: we are looking for them 'cause they cause exponential value growth but that's not the only way to defense your business: here's a list of other strong moats!
Invest on Sharetribe, the MVPlatform DIY solution ↴
Sharetribe helps entrepreneurs and organizations create their own sharing economy marketplaces quickly and evolutively. Now they are in crowdfunding and most amazingly they are proposing a steward-ownership model, to commit that the value they create is dedicated to a purpose!
What is value and who creates it? ↴
The economist Mariana Mazzucato has tried to answer it in her new book The Value of Everything, listen to the interview. She claims that right now many of the world’s most successful companies don’t actually create anything but merely “extract value”: a parasitic system we need to refocus!
