Emilio Aguayo and Alice Hector winners at the Volcano triathlon

Emilio Aguayo (ESP) and Alice Hector (GBR) ran away with the Volcano Triathlon crowns today in an overcast but hot day on the volcanic island of Lanzarote, where over 400 athletes were on the start line for a tough day: A 1.5km Swim in the Club La Santa lagoon, a 40km bike ride on the northern part of the Island and a 10km run near Club La Santa.

It was the third straight Volcano Triathlon win for Hector who dominated for most of the race. This was the first victory for Aguayo at this popular race.

After a great swim, Aguayo came second out the water (00:19:18) in hot pursuit of fellow Spaniard Raúl Lecuona (00:18:55) followed by the rest of the pack. However, on the bike course it was Aguayo who sprinted to the lead with an impressive time (00:58:10) shadowed by Colin Norris (GBR) (00:59:18), Filip van Craenenbroeck (00:59:36) and Reece Barclay (01:00:04). On the running track it was a nail-biting fight for the 3rd place between Raúl Lecuona, Barclay and van Craenenbroeck. Aguayo managed to keep the distance to Colin Norris.
This was Aguayo’s race and he kept the pressure high all the time winning with a total time of  01:54:33 with Norris on second 01:56:07 and Spain’s Canary revelation Raúl Lecuona on third  (01:58:05). There was a big surprise at the ending point as Norris was disqualified as he missed to go the right way after the second loop on the bike course. With this decision, age group athlete Filip Van Craenebroeck (01:58:10) made it to the podium.

Alice Hector:
“It’s a great race to me, I love Olympic distances, the course is hard but it seems to suit me. The run is my favourite part, I took the run on the lead so that’s a good sign. I had some catching up to do on the swim, so I had to work quite hard on the bike, but I got the girls one by one. My coach didn’t want me to run super hard if I didn’t have to, so I could control the second lap and try to enjoy it a little bit. And for next year’s edition of Volcano, I think I have to come now!”.

Emilio Aguayo
"I'm very happy, we've been training hard this week at Club La Santa. I had doubts about how I was going to find myself, it took me a while to get into the rhythm, but the race was the script I had set up. I've been injured for two months but I felt good running. The hardest part was the swimming, I had a hard time keeping up with the pace, but overall I'm very happy with everything”.
