Ashland, Ohio. Known by many as “The World Headquarters of Nice People”. It’s also the place where Marian Yang grew up, daughter of a violinist and a clarinetist.
“...the music I heard growing up is what initially drew me to the violin.”
Marian began violin lessons at age five and developed a deep love for chamber music, which prompted her to keep studying and playing.
A Suzuki-certified instructor, Marian offers private violin instruction where the core of her teaching is focused on simple principles: whole body awareness, solid technique, and listening skills. Outside of music, she enjoys knitting, hiking, baking bread, all homespun pastimes.
This attraction to simplicity is in sharp contrast to her passion for all kinds of new music, the very nature of which is anything but simple. The work of one of Marian’s favorite composers, Kaija Saariaho, is a perfect example of the complexity found in new music compositions. Marian is currently working on pieces for solo violin and electronics, with an emphasis on women composers.
“I’m thankful for my teacher in undergrad, Kia-Hui Tan, for originally encouraging me to start down this path.”
Marian has a Master of Music from San Francisco Conservatory and is dedicated to expanding the presence of classical music and its cultural role in her current location– Silicon Valley. But who knows what her next destination is. You may get lucky.
Vortex Temporum will be Marian's first appearance with the Collective. We hope you will join us tonight at Unity Church, 8pm.
