A Newsletter from the UN & NGOs Designers Group Geneva
Visual Communicators Newsletter
MAY 2018

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter: info@UNdesigners.org

The process is what matters

Almost no free spaces in a 60-seats room at ITU to learn insights from the brains at design agencies Antistatique and YAAY in our 11th UN Designers meeting.
Under 'Design SystemsAntistatique took us through design documentation nowadays. Far from the traditional pdf guidelines, new communication channels require dynamic systems based in atomic design. It may sound very scientific or far-fetched, but once you familiarize with the terminology, it makes total sense. If this sounds interesting, Marc Friederich suggested a book and a website to get you started. Their presentation can be seen here (press spacebar to see all slides).
Second talk from YAAY took us inside their design process, with interesting examples on their relationship with clients and how to make them part of the team, 'sharing their suffering'. They showed us through their data visualization work the importance of shaping content in the right way before getting into purely design stage: design thinking as a problem-solving discipline beyond the artboards.
In sum, it was a great meeting, with plenty of good advice to take home. A big thanks to the two studios for their presentations, and to all of you who made it to the meeting!

A pledge worth a black pencil

D&AD has earned a place at the top of the creative awards universe, being the black pencil the most sought-after recognition a creative can wish for. That prestigious award is precisely what the campaign to preserve Palau's ecosystem has taken home. The campaign tries to build awareness of the environmental effect of mass tourism on the island, creating a pledge that visitors need to sign within the visa stamp in their passports. That's the basic principle, but it has been cleverly expanded into much more, even an inflight video to explain the issue.
There is plenty of more creative marvels among the awardees, and if you're feeling bad because your work didn't get a pencil this year, worry no more: you still have your chance to shine until July 18 to participate in the D&AD Impact awards (celebrating ideas that contribute towards a better, fairer and more sustainable future for all).

Raising our game

After dominating many other markets, gamification is finally being seen as a key tool for spreading development and humanitarian messaging. The existence of Games4Sustainability is a proof of it. Plenty of examples throughout the site, which can build on those who already hit the news like WFP's Share the meal, UNHCR's My life as a Refugee, UNESCO's World Rescue, ARTE's Bury me my love, or government initiatives such as The Game of Floods, New Shores or Move Philippines to say a few... We encourage you to start playing!

May Inspiration
A webinar
Our favourite Meetup, Digital Strategy + UX next series of events will allow you to follow the four-day Invision Design Talks webinar, all under the same theme 'DesignTalks: Careers'
A portal
Proof on OCHA's good work at prioritizing visual communications is its interactives portal, a source of the organization's increasingly interactive and visually-lead work.
A redesign
After their acknowledgement of historic racism, National Geographic now updates the reader's experience with a redesign that enhances all its visual and storytelling virtues.
A(nother) photo-award
World Press Photo is not the only photography award that praises work done in the field. The Sony awards also deals with current affairs, such as the work of Flindt Pedersen in Mosul.
A (Free Press) day
As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, help yourself with this interactive map by Reporters without Borders that ranks countries by the level of freedom available to journalists.
A bookstore
Counter-print is just what we were asking for: a curated online book store specialized in design-related hard-to-find books. Sadly, many of them are already sold out on their site though.
