Final couple of days to book hotel rooms at Buxton Convention
Annual Convention and AGM
The Palace Hotel, Buxton
11th - 14th May 2018
Our annual convention is fast approaching, just over two weeks until we all meet in Buxton for a fun weekend of 3D shows and meeting 3D friends old and new.
If you have not already booked a room at the Palace Hotel in Buxton please do so straight away, the hotel will release any unallocated rooms this Friday 27th April 2018, after which time availability is not guaranteed and price will be the best available market rate at the time, not necessarily our special convention rate of £70 per person per night including Dinner, Bed and Breakfast (and free parking).
Please don't forget to also Register your attendance with us by contacting our membership secretary Mary Paul.
Full Details and registration forms for our Annual convention in Buxton can be downloaded from the web site: Buxton Convention 2018
We already have around 80 people registered to attend.
‘For a few years now, it has been the practice for members attending our Conventions, to bring along prints for display purposes. This being our 125th anniversary, it would be great if members bring along prints or slides taken over the years for display purposes and as a talking point. Viewers and mounting boards will be provided for this purpose, so why not just pop what you feel may be of interest to others into your suitcase.’ - Barry Aldous
Please also bring along anything you think other members will be interested to see as part of our Saturday morning activities of table top displays and sales items. Many members bring along their latest 3D digital display - phone and tablets are popular. Also their latest 3D cameras or accessories they have constructed or purchased. If you have excess 3D items and equipment you no longer require why not bring them along and place them for sale.
Celebrating 125 years since being founded in 1893, The Stereoscopic Society Convention and AGM 2018 will be held in Buxton – Gateway to the Peak District, at the Palace Hotel, from Friday 11th to 14th May 2018.
Each evening (Fri - Sun) after dinner there will be 3D projection in the High Peak Suite which is very large with a high ceiling allowing comfortable clear views of our large 3D screen. Saturday morning will be our AGM and Workshops, Sales and Displays activities. Saturday afternoon is free time to explore Buxton, see the Palace Gardens, the Devonshire Dome, the Buxton Opera House, or take a walk to Pooles Cavern or Solomon's Temple.
The Sunday outing will be to Haddon Hall and Bakewell with scenic views of the Peak District. www.haddonhall.co.uk

Queen in 3D Exhibition by Brian May
Lomography Gallery Store Soho
3rd May - 13th June 2018
Lomography are very excited to announce the new exhibition of stereoscopic photos taken by Brian May whilst touring with Queen. From an early age Brian would travel with a stereo (3-D) camera in hand, so on Queen tours and during recordings he was able to capture rare behind-the-scenes moments of one of the world’s greatest rock bands. Decades later these were shared for the first time in Brian's photographic autobiography, Queen in 3-D, published by his publishing house, The London Stereoscopic Company.

Waterperry House and Gardens
3D Event - Help and Ideas Required
Saturday 5th May 2018 from 10AM till 5PM
I have arranged that the Stereoscopic Society can have the use of a classroom at Waterperry House and Gardens on Saturday 5th May 2018 from 10AM till 5PM in order to do a demonstration of 3D photography to visitors to the famous gardens.
Waterperry was the home of Art in Action until very recently and is very active in promoting Arts in general. We are not being charged for the use of the classroom. The classroom, about 20ftX20ft, is in a good position leading off from the car park and before visitors reach the garden entrance, so they will not pay to see our stuff.
We now need to decide how to make the best use of the facility to promote 3D to the general public. I suggested taking the AOC monitor, as it will probably be small groups of people spending a few minutes with us. But we could also make use of the room with a demonstration of how to take 3D photos with a smart phone, or cameras, to get the audience started in 3D. Possibly a display of Victorian stereo cards etc. Any other ideas most welcome and also offers of shows, or images, of flowers, insects, fungi, butterflies, birds, landscapes, and anything else remotely associated with gardens; creepy-crawlies would look great in 3D. The classroom has windows along 2 sides, so is not suitable for projection.
Waterperry will promote the display in their newsletter and through social media so it could be excellent publicity which will reach a completely new audience.
We are already listed on their web site events diary.
Waterperry Gardens is near Wheatley about 5 minutes from M40, J8A coming south or J8 going north, or the M40 junction on the A40, see www.waterperrygardens.co.uk.
I am prepared to man the stand, but it would be nice to have some help, particularly as there is a chance for us to extend the exhibition for an extra day if there is a lot of interest. Waterperry are happy to make space for us on future occasions if we are interested.
At Waterperry there is a Garden Shop, Gardening Museum, Gift Shop, Tea Shop, formal gardens including a Tudor Knot garden, riverside walk etc on site.
If any of you can help or offer shows or images, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me chairman@stereoscopicsociety.org.uk.

Membership Renewal
Membership renewals are now overdue and those that haven't renewed will no longer receive their printed Journals through the post. However; it appears some members have neglected to renew their membership in the past and were confused that as they were still receiving these Newsletter emails that their membership was current. Unfortunately they have been missing out on receiving their printed Journals in the post, and may be as we had a year without Journals not so long ago they didn't realise they were missing out on the wonderful Journals John Peck has been producing for almost four years now.
Please note that receiving this newsletter does not necessarily mean your membership is up to date and current (or that you are a member at all).
Anyone can subscribe to this newsletter who may be interested in learning more about The Stereoscopic Society or the general 3D news listed here.
And equally if your membership lapses; although you will no longer receive your printed Journal in the post, you will still receive this newsletter until YOU decide to unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of these newsletter emails.
So if you haven't received any printed Journals through the post in quite a while may be your membership is not as up to date as you thought.
The latest Journal issue to be published was number 214, containing predominantly images from this years competition. You should have received your copy late March early April.
If you need to check your status or re/join please contact the society membership secretary Mary Paul.
New Society Librarian Required
Keith Webb has been the Society Librarian for the past 12 years and has decided that the time has come to step down and pass on the mantle to a new Librarian.
New General Secretary Still Required
We are still without a General Secretary and our current committee members are juggling multiple roles which is not good for the health of the society or theirs.
It is most important for the continued smooth running of the Society that we get a new General Secretary elected as soon as possible.
We are unconstitutional without one.
Please can YOU do this essential job, or do you know someone who can?
Please Help.
Click here to read about the detailed duties of the General Secretary.
Thank You,
Colin Metherell, Chairman.
Please reply to chairman@stereoscopicsociety.org.uk
Please reply to this email with any other 3D news you feel other members could benefit from for the next newsletter. Or just get in touch to express any opinions or suggestions about the society.
