Bridging Gaps: Higher Education, Media and Society

We are pleased to announce the 2018 Day 1 CMCS keynote speech by Elliot Pill. Titled “Model Behavior? Celebrities and ethically questionable promotional methods in the digital age,” this opening talk will shed light on how we can engage in promotional literacy. The 7th international CMCS conference “Bridging Gaps: Where is Ethical Glamour in Celebrity Culture?” will be held in Lisbon on July 1-3. Read Elliot Pill’s abstract
here.

Earlier this month, 2017 CMCS keynote Andrew Mendelson launched his edited collection Trump and the Media, which is a timely contribution to media studies and celebrity studies.  It was a pleasure to attend his book launch at New York University and converse on ethics and celebrity politics along with co-authors Rodney Besson and Julia Sonnevend.  Links to the book are available
here.

I also had the pleasure of attending CMCS member Winnie M Li’s US launch of her award-winning book Dark Chapter also in New York City last week. Read a review of the book
here.

As well, our CMCS board members Jackie Raphael and Celia Lam published their book
Celebrity and the Incredible. Jackie also released the 2nd episode of CMCS media production Celebrity Chat (Season 4). This month’s episode features the best video from the 6th CMCS conference held at University of Western Australia. Watch and share the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6KbCSRfNeM&t=194s

If you are in Toronto next month, join me at public event “This is my Glamour 18”, which will be held at the Globe and Mail Centre on May 6. I will give a keynote speech on “
Glamour and Celebrity Activism”. Huge thanks to ANOKHI Media, public personality Raj Girn, media and sponsors. I will be back in New York City for a conversation on celebrity activism at the East Side Institute on May 22.

Please see deadlines for media and research opportunities, internship positions, upcoming events and Call for Papers below. Special thanks to scholars Ellen Wright, Celia Lam, Daniel Dove, Joyleen Christensen, Milan Hain, Jennifer Polk, and Photini Vrikki for sharing the CFPs. More research and media updates are available here:

Many faculty, students, and journalists request that CMCS circulates calls, events, and publications, and archive them for future access. CMCS, as a not-for-profit organization that aims at giving a voice, advancing media outreach, and supporting social causes, is glad to share information relevant to its mandate. We share this information here in the newsletter and archive it in the CMCS website blog area along with organizers’ contact information.

E-mail
info@cmc-centre.com for suggestions, ideas and questions. We are always happy to share and support your work.

Sincerely,
Samita Nandy @famecritic
