October 2018 Newsletter

With the recent autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere, it is an especially exciting time to be engaged in acoustic ecology. In addition to the sounds of the change in season, there are exciting WFAE updates as well as upcoming conferences.

New Affiliate Representative

The WFAE Board welcomes new Affiliate Representative, Rob MacKay who has succeeded John Levack Drever as UK and Ireland Soundscape Community (UKISC)’s new Chair. One year ago, following a discussion with WFAE members and many interested attendees of the Sound + Environment conference at Hull University, it was clear that many were interested in being involved in an active WFAE Affiliate Organization for this region. The WFAE thanks John for many years of service as UKISC’s founder and WFAE representative.

Library Submissions

The WFAE is pleased to announce that it is rebuilding its online library of publications, projects, conferences and other media pertaining to acoustic ecology. WFAE members of Affiliate Organizations and Individual WFAE are invited to help in the effort by using our online submission form.

Update on Soundscape

We are pleased to inform you that the 2017 edition of the WFAE’s annual journal is nearing completion and is due for release in November. The Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology (AFAE) is this edition’s guest editor, lead by Editor-in-Chief, Leah Barclay. Rob MacKay and UKISC are working on Volume 18 with an anticipated release in February 2019.

Upcoming Conferences

There are two upcoming conferences of note: The Global Composition 2018 (October 4-7, Dieburg, Germany), and the Conference of The Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology 2018 (November 28 - December 1, Budapest, Hungary). The Global Composition 2018 conference will begin with performances and installations at the Langstadt train station. The conference will feature keynotes by Milena Droumeva, Maria Klatte, and Walter Tilgner. There will be a celebration of the WFAE silver jubilee, with a participatory social sculpture. The final program is now available.

The Conference of The Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology 2018 proposes to established a new Central European WFAE Affiliate Organization. The conference is being organized by Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest (MOME), with contributions from the Budapest Music Center (BMC) and Spatial Sound Institute (SSI, NL/H).
