E-Bulletin : April 2018

It's shortly back to "work" for us all - at a local level as Term 2 approaches, and for the Network after a successful Conference and Annual General Meeting.

Over 80 representatives from more than 35 U3As attended the Conference in Canberra from 11th to 13th April, including three delegates from Western Australia and one from Tasmania who travelled at their own expense to attend. Feedback about the Conference was overwhelmingly positive, and much of value was learnt. Reports from the various sessions and presenters will be available over coming weeks through E-Bulletins, Newslink and our website. The AGM was also well attended, with all Special Motions containing changes to the Constitution passed. Minutes will also be posted on our website shortly.

Planning for next year's Conference is already underway, so put its location, Tamworth, and the dates 10th to 12th April 2019 into your diaries.

Please share this E-Bulletin with other members of your Committee, and invite them to subscribe here so they can receive our communications directly themselves. We welcome feedback and submissions for distribution to member U3As - you can contact us by clicking here.

Protecting "U3A"

We all know what a "U3A" is, right? But what if a commercial training company, or a nursing home business, or a travel agent wanted to identify itself as being part of "U3A"? Or, heaven forbid, a private individual successfully argued that they could register "U3A" as their own, and then charge what they liked for us to continue to call our organisations U3As? Far fetched? Not at all, according to Trade Mark law.

When it comes to money, people are always trying it on - and they don't need to be scammers from overseas. Currently, the U3A Network NSW has the logo at the head of this E-Bulletin, and the letters "U3A", registered as a Trade Mark. However, we need to remain vigilant, and follow the law, if we are to protect our Trade Mark from misuse or our ownership being challenged.

The U3A Network NSW Committee, along with Networks in other states, has recently become aware of further steps that may be necessary to keep "U3A" safe. This may mean some significant changes to how the Networks interact with their member U3As - and some basic standards being set on matters such as incorporation and use of the logo. Fortunately we are being advised by a recently retired specialist in Trade Mark law, who is also a dedicated member of and believer in U3A, so watch this space for further developments - but be assured that there is no intention to threaten the operational independence of our individual member U3As.
The Network has a casual vacancy for the Regional Representative covering the new Mid-North Coast region. This region includes U3As in Forster/Tuncurry, Manning Valley (Taree),  Port Macquarie-Hastings, Kempsey-Macleay, Gloucester, Nambucca Heads and Coffs Harbour. The Regional Representative must be a current member of one of these U3As.
The position continues until the next AGM (April 2019), and involves being the link person between the Network and its members, attending two or three Committee meetings in Sydney over the year, and organising regional forums. All expenses including travel, accommodation stationery etc are reimbursed.

Newsletters, Newsletters and more Newsletters...

Our E-Bulletins are kept deliberately brief, and are designed to act more as a way of providing you with an overview of resources and events that may be of of interest to U3As rather than providing in-depth information. Newsletters, such as our own "Newslink", often contain more news and detail so it is worthwhile keeping an eye on what they contain.

These links may therefore be useful to you in catching up with the latest:
Does your U3A need a home?

One of the most common problems we hear about from our member U3As is their constant quest for reasonably priced venues, and/or venues with some security of tenure.

While there may be many different options depending on the size of your U3A, the size of your city or town, and the relationships you may have with local councils and clubs, finding available accommodation is only the first step. Once a potential place is found, it then needs to be assessed for affordability, access, facilities, safety and more.

The U3A Network Victoria has recently produced a fantastic resource, the "Premises and Facilities Handbook", which guides Committees through the process of selecting suitable accommodation and also contains excellent ideas about places to look. The "Premises and Facilities Handbook" is easily downloadable from their website here. It's well worth a read, even if your U3A is not currently looking for a home - you might be inspired by some of the Case Studies, including how Brisbane U3A bought their own premises in the CBD for almost a million dollars!
Current Funding Opportunities

Be Connected Activation Grants

Activation grants are one-off grants awarded to new organisations joining the Be Connected network. All partners who join the network before August 2019 will be able to apply for a one-off $1,500 grant.

The activation grant is designed to get you started in the Be Connected network, and for the funding, we expect partners to support at least 30 older people over 10 months (15 if located in outer regional, remote or very remote areas). You'll need to support learners through the Be Connected website, and further guidance on how to do this is provided to all network partners.

Funding can be spent on anything that will help you support older Australians to gain digital skills, including new devices, broadband fees, or expenses for digital mentors or volunteers.

Activation grants are available until August 2019, with applications assessed and funding awarded on a monthly basis. For more information click here

Westfield Local Heroes

Westfield Local Heroes is a community recognition and grants program operating in areas that have a local Westfield Shopping Centre. Individuals are nominated and voted for by their communities, with three finalists per Westfield Centre each awarded a $10,000 grant to support their affiliated organisation’s work, programs or activities. Applications close on 16th May 2018. For further details click here

Supporting Members with Vision Loss

We thank the UK's Third Age Trust for the following advice, which has been copied from their website. This advice aims to support U3A members with vision loss so that they can continue to enjoy and participate in U3A activities.

Losing your vision can be an isolating experience but there are ways in which U3As can support their members to continue to be part of the U3A community and have access to the U3A learning experience. Members can experience a range of degrees of vision loss: having low vision, being partially sighted, being visually impaired or registered blind. Most members are informed about what their condition means for them and are able to suggest the support that they need but below are some general tips on how to adapt activities to make them as accessible as possible and some additional sources of information on vision loss.

Awareness

The first step in increasing accessibility is for Committees to know which members are experiencing vision loss and what their needs are. Your membership application form could be used to ask for this information, with an explanation of why the information is being collected and what it will be used for, in accordance with privacy and data protection legislation.

Providing Accessible Information

When producing text documents, remember:

  • Light letters on a dark background are easier to read than dark on light.
  • Avoid coloured lettering other than for large text titles. Dark blue and greens are the most effective.
  • Ideal font size 18, minimum 16.
  • Use either a standard Roman or Sans Serif font; Arial works well. Avoid decorative fonts, use bold type, avoid italics.
  • Spacing between text should be wide; text with close letter spacing presents problems. A mono-spaced font such as Courier, which allocates an equal amount of space for each letter, is very readable.
  • Avoid paper with a glossy finish.

Consider engaging a volunteer to explain (in person or over the telephone) what courses/classes are available, and to provide information on whether they are suitable for people with different levels of vision loss.

Increasing Accessibility in Groups and Meetings

  • Provide seating close to the front to allow members with some vision loss to be as close to any visual displays as possible.
  • Try to reduce glare from windows and lights, for instance by positioning seating with the back to windows.
  • Provide copies of presentations for use on a member’s own laptop, which is usually adapted for specific needs.
  • Use a room layout that allows participants to use their hearing more easily to follow what is going on, for instance in horse-shoe or boardroom layouts.
  • Ensure that tutors/conveners are informed in sufficient time ahead of the event of any requests for specific arrangements that need to be made .

Equipment to Consider

There is a range of assistive technology products available, such as:

  • Magnifiers: these can be hand-held or digital.
  • Computer software: can be used to convert text to speech.
  • Computer hardware: helps to produce documents in easy to read formats by adjusting zoom, glare, contrast and style.
  • Audio-description: cinemas, museums and galleries often provide headsets with an additional narration track.
  • Braille technology: to produce documents in braille.
There is more excellent advice available on the internet, for example from Vision Australia or the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel
