Adidas North America Prez King will continue to advise Three Stripes, but as of July 1 will be succeeded by North America GM Armstrong. King has been lauded over the last couple of years for leading the company's resurgence. Of key note on MBB-FBI developments, "An Adidas spokeswoman said King’s departure wasn’t related to the investigation, or any misconduct." Adidas Executive Board Member Auschel: "This is a well-prepared, seamless transition. We are very excited to promote Zion Armstrong to one of the most important roles in our company. He has been instrumental to our success over the last three years, co-leading adidas North America together with Mark King. We are convinced that Zion’s leadership will enable us to continue our successful journey in North America." (link, link)
USF AD Harlan inks a three-year extension that could keep him in Tampa through the 2020-21 academic campaign & his base pay will jump from $500K to $525K. Annual incentive potential is $150K. If Harlan exits for another gig before July 1 of 2020, he'll owe the institution $262,500. Prez Genshaft: "Mark has done a terrific job of implementing a strategic vision for USF Athletics and cultivating a top-level environment in which our student-athletes are thriving and achieving great success in the classroom and in competition." (link, link)
Eastern Washington will name its new AD this morning at an 11A PST presser. Word on the street has Interim boss & former UTSA AD Hickey getting the job on a permanent basis. (link)
Former CBSSports.com headliner & current Aspen Institute Editorial Director Solomon dives in on, "The History Behind the Debate Over Paying NCAA Athletes." Solomon covers: 1) Why NCAA athletes are called student-athletes; 2) 1984 Supreme Court decision shifted the power to conferences; and, 3) Impact of Ed O’Bannon v. NCAA. LEAD1 Executive Director McMillen quoted a number of times. Of note, "The system has allowed coaches’ compensation to explode so it’s a fair question. If that hadn’t happened, I think the pressure on paying athletes would be far less today. […] I hate to say this, I think the plaintiff lawyers are slowing this down. If you didn’t have a court case now, I think college sports could have addressed this. Now, the lawyers will say they’ve made progress because of the court cases. It’s what comes first – the chicken or the egg? But when a court case’s fundamental principle is tethered to education, it’s a slippery slope no one will touch right now. I think the ADs are more sympathetic to (players making money off their NIL) provided some of their concerns are addressed. They don’t want it to be an abusive recruiting tool." Lots here. (link)
Continuing the theme, Nebraska boss Moos, "I put a pencil to it once. When you add in travel, cost of attendance and the nutrition and the health care, what we have to offer is about a $225,000-a-year job. That ain’t bad. [...] If you believe you’re gonna be a college athlete, you go to college. If you wanna go to the pros, go to pros. [...] Hopefully we can get that addressed, and the sooner the better." (link)
The National Association of Basketball Coaches circulated a memo amongst its membership base yesterday that encourages all to support the Rice Commission recommendations due out this morning. Executive Director Haney & Deputy boss Minton: "The tone with which we respond is important to the image of our sport and coaches in general, and will either reflect that we are leaders committed to bringing about important reform, or that we are opposed to change." Three talking points also communicated: 1) Change was coming & "we are uniquely positioned to offer valuable insight"; 2) "As coaches, we are committed to working with the NCAA in evaluating the recommendations and will provide appropriate input as legislation is drafted"; and, 3) Appreciative of the Commission's efforts. (link)
OregonLive's Schmidt & Manning review MBB HC contracts in the Pac-12 & Big 12 to get a sense of how shoe monies are connected to HC pay, "Shoe contract money is divvied up in ways almost impossible to calculate, records show. Some coaches are paid directly by shoe companies. Others receive pass-through dollars that are obscured through athletic department budgets and ambiguous contracts. Because there is no real regulation, the universities and apparel companies are allowed to structure contracts any way they want – with the majority of basketball coaches' annual earnings labeled as something other than base salary." The pair also use "obscure maneuvering" to describe the lengths some schools go to mask HC compensation. It's another entry in the media outlet's "The Swoosh Effect" series that followed MBB-FBI news. More. (link)
Yahoo's Forde writes on Duke's move to no longer allow incoming freshmen to request a specific roommate, yet some student-athletes will be strategically paired together for "academic and athletic schedule compatibilities." Forde: "Translated: Blue Devils basketball players will continue to room with basketball players, football players with football players, and so on. The coaches and staffers will arrange it, not the players, as if that differentiation matters. […] It’s a missed opportunity to bridge the divide between the general student experience and the cloistered student-athlete experience." Forde then points to Stanford & Notre Dame where freshmen student-athletes live with NARPs (Non-Athletic Regular People, as coined by those in Palo Alto), which provides a valuable experience & perspective. (link)
The Athletic's Spatola argues "it's time for the NCAA to come around on legalized betting." Spatola's thesis centers partially on the misperception that SCOTUS passing PASPA would lead to mass corruption, "The reality is that regulated betting makes it easier to root out criminals." Spatola also points to issues surrounding hosting championship events in states that move forward with sports gambling, as well as, "While it may be painful for the NCAA to admit, gambling is great for any sport. It grows interest faster than any marketing campaign, and if the organization and its member schools take a page from the NBA, there is a potential financial windfall associated with it." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Sixty-three percent of the Rivals100 prospective FB student-athletes inked with an institution outside their home state in 2017, the highest mark ever recorded since tracking the matriculation of the elite cohort. The previous top mark was 58% in 2011, but the average from 2002-2010 was 44% and from 2011-18 was 55%. Hero Sports' Doughty: "Social media and nationally televised games headline the widely speculated reasons why top prospects are leaving their home states at a rapid pace. YouTube wasn't launched until 2005, a year before both Hudl and Twitter were founded. Every Power Five game was not nationally televised 16 years ago, and it wasn't until 2007 that Americans sent and received more text messages than phone calls." (link)

Watch: Nine-plus minute interview with San Diego AD McGillis as he notes a strategic planning process that will result in a "path forward for our department" to be released this summer. Part of the process for USD is "getting a perspective from the media on how we're viewed," as well as engaging with a number of other constituency groups. McGillis also touches on crisis management situations, like his unexpected MBB HC search, "There's not a manual. [...] When mistakes happen, which happens at any institution or company, you take it head-on, you address it transparently & you go from there." More. (link)
Texas AD Del Conte tweets a rendering of what Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium could look like with the coming south end zone renovation, tells Longhorn fans to be on the lookout for an important survey in their inboxes. (link); Del Conte also scores a $1M gift from former MLB & UT standout Clemens to go toward an indoor facility for the Baseball program. Overall, it's a $9M project. Clemens: "When I was at Texas, we had the best facility in the nation. Now with the addition of the indoor complex and training facility, it will once again be the best place to play, workout and take your game to the next level. I hope all of you will be proud of it!" (link)
UCSD AD Edwards updates on enhancements coming to RIMAC Arena. The work includes a new video board that he calls "one of the largest collegiate video boards in the country" at 50' long & 15' high. A new seating plan in a horseshoe shape that will be realigned for center court, "dynamic" new interior & exterior graphics, video boards for the scorers table & a doubling in size for the Skybox hosting area. Edwards: "The RIMAC Arena enhancements are a great way to start off the Fall 2018 season and showcase our upcoming move to the Big West Conference." (link)
Interesting read from Front Office Sports on Temple FB's move to put student-athlete Twitter handles on the back of jerseys for this year's spring game. Asst. AD for Digital Marketing Seigfried: "He (FB HC Collins) is very social media savvy and understands the importance of it. The deal was, if you have over a 3.0 GPA, you can put your handle on the back of your uniform for the spring game. What better way to motivate a group of 18-22-year-olds?" Seigfried also notes how the Owls leveraged turnovers last season with a white board where student-athletes added their handles after coming up with a TO, "I think there is a bigger point to all this. We as college athletic departments have the choice to shy away from our student-athletes’ social media accounts, or embrace them. Here at Temple, we are choosing to embrace, empower, and educate. If we’re mentioning you in a tweet, it’s a privilege. It means there’s a trust there. We don’t want to stifle your voice or your personality. There’s a way to be funny and engaging without being inappropriate." (link)
The Arkansas Women's Tennis team advanced to the semifinals of last week's SEC Tournament, a surprisingly deep run that brought its overall record to 10-16, which, for you collegiate tennis aficionados, made the Hogs six wins shy of eligibility for an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Not to be dismayed, Arkansas scheduled six (yes, six) matches on Sunday at Tennessee State and by winning all six of them sits at 16-16, awaiting the 2018 NCAA Tourney field announcement on May 1. No word on how much, if anything, the Hogs paid TSU for the opportunity. (link)
More Personnel: Houston AD Pezman appoints Greensheet Media leader Kehoe as Assoc. AD for Marketing & Fan Engagement. Kehoe has also honed her skills at the Houston Chronicle, CBS Radio Houston & Cox Radio Houston. (link); Texas Prez Fenves joins the College Football Playoff Board of Managers. (link); Nebraska AD Moos says Baseball HC Erstad's job is safe. (link); Tennessee AD Fulmer interviewed for the umpteenth time about new FB HC Pruitt. (link); CBSSports.com's Dodd also chats with Fulmer about current spring FB game attendance. Fulmer wonders, "Why don't we play a game [against another team]? You could even do like high school and play a jamboree.  You bring in Clemson, North Carolina. Play a round robin." (link); Canisius AD Maher hires SUNY Genesco (DIII) WBB HC Hemer to take over the Golden Griffins program. (link); Miami (OH) Field Hockey HC Puzo gets a five-year extension. (link); Presbyterian AD Sterling goes with Louisiana Tech AHC Sharp as his new WBB boss. (link); New Western Kentucky WBB HC Collins gets a $200K base deal. Buyout is $250K. East Carolina and Adidas announce a "collaborative creation of a unique brand pattern designed exclusively for ECU." The pattern includes six distinctive elements: the crossbones, a compass, an X, an hour glass, crossed swords and a pirate hat. Sr. Assoc. AD for Administration/CFO Workman: "ECU's unique history, tradition and culture gives us an identity which is distinctively our own. Thanks to our partnership with adidas, we are now in a position to enhance our brand with an innovative Pirate pattern that not only embraces our past, but boldly reflects our spirit and moves ECU toward the future. Our greatest strength over many generations has been the loyalty, pride and passion that lies within the hearts of all Pirates." Apparel with the new mark hits shelves today. (link - release, link - video of the design process)
Iowa is the latest to score an HC endowment as Mellecker Family Head Men's Tennis Coach Fund has been created. It's the first such arrangement for the Hawkeyes as AD Barta comments, "The Melleckers are longtime supporters of Iowa athletics and have made an incredible commitment to the legacy of Iowa tennis. Their significant contribution will transform the lives of so many Hawkeye student-athletes for generations to come." (link); Sticking with the tennis beat, South Dakota State will discontinue its Men's & Women's programs at the end of the academic year as Jackrabbits AD Sell points to the lack of "readily available" indoor & outdoor courts that have impacted the student-athlete experience. (link)
The Clemson Board of Trustees gives the green light for phase one of a concept plan to begin a design of a 13K square-foot ops complex for the soccer programs. The total project is expected to run $8M. The board also approved a $13M space - including a stadium and ops facility - for the Tigers softball team, which will begin competition in 2020. (link); Old Dominion's Foreman Field will get a new turf and scoreboard, separate from the $65M renovation. The replacements will take place after this season, once the renovations are completed. AD Selig on the new screen: "What we have now is rudimentary. What we’re going to have is going to be bigger, more colorful, more exciting. It’s going to be high resolution." (link)
Southern and Under Armour are working out contract details for UA to become the Jaguars' "official apparel and equipment provider" per AD Banks. Sounds like the deal will extend to the university side, too. Banks: "I knew that, with a chance, I could get an apparel company to buy into the history and the legacy of Southern University athletics and its fans, Jaguar Nation, and what they bring to the table. I think a lot of times, it’s not about the money exchanged on the spot, but it’s the value. I think Southern has shown we have a great value." Official announcement coming in the next few weeks. (link)
The Twitter account for Toledo sent a tweet yesterday morning with an image of Shrek promising that if the tweet received 500K retweets the green ogre would become the school's new mascot. As the number of retweets soared, UT pulled down the post, joking that it was Rocky - the real mascot - being jealous of the possibility of being replaced. A spokesperson for the school "The tweet was meant to be fun, but it caused too much of a distraction." (link - article, link - tweet)
Also Noticed: Stil no ruling from SCOTUS on PASPA. Monday is the next possible date. (link); Binghamton's new Softball turf is finally ready for action. $770K project. (link); ESPN MBB analyst Goodman, "55 of the underclassmen have already signed with agents. That leaves about 125 who are 'testing the draft process.' My guess around 100-110 of those guys return to school." (link); Arizona State & Mississippi State FB ink a home & home deal for 2024 (Tempe) & 2025 (Starkvegas). (link); Snapchat is testing a redesign that puts user-generated Stories on the Discover tab, which is a bit of a reversal of a recent revamp. (link); Ohio State is asking fans to vote on a new design for its hoops court. (link)
With a number of father-son AD stories around college athletics, this long article from Inside Higher Ed on the Presidential lineage at Goshen College (NAIA) is intriguing. Current Goshen Prez Stolzfus followed in her father's footsteps, though there was a 22-year gap between their tenures at the northern Indiana institution. Former Prez Stolzfus: "I said, ‘Daughter, this is your decision -- we will support you if you take it or if you walk away.'" Current Prez Stolzfus: "He trusted my discernment to know what was right for me and Goshen College. I could sense his curiosity but also his respect and restraint for my process. I never felt he was imposing his views. […] I tried not to put too many expectations on him for this particular decision, or draw him in too much." Lots more. (link)
