PARKINSON'S PROGRESS: YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS AND EVERY MONTH!

Parkinson's disease, or PD, affects about 1 million people in the United States, and 10 million across the world.

One of those people battling a form of the progressive disease is former President George H.W. Bush, who had to be hospitalized for an infection this week, just one day after attending the funeral of his wife, former First Lady Barbara Bush. President Bush, who uses a wheelchair and an electric scooter because of the disease's effect on his mobility, is said to be doing well and is responding to treatments.
But even with the treatments that are currently available, those who are diagnosed with PD know that there is not yet a cure, or any medicine that can reverse the effects of the disease. That's why, as part of Parkinson's Awareness Month, we are shining the spotlight on two activists and role models in the push to raise PD awareness, research, funding and support for all those who are affected.
NBA Executive of the Year (2000) John Gabriel, winner of a BOLDY® award, says that despite his PD, he's still the same guy "from the neck up" and continues to be optimistic about his future, and the futures of other Parkinson's patients. John has raised more than a half-million dollars for The Parkinson Association of Central Florida.
Larry Smith never set out to be an inspiration, but as Parkinson’s disease continued to steal control of his body, Larry’s resolve kept getting stronger. It’s why he set off on a quest to ride his recumbent bike across the state of South Dakota. He challenged anyone with a disability to join him. And that led to an eye-opening and award-winning film.
