40 Days of Summer

We are digging in to planning for our fifth annual 40 Days of Summer program! For those unfamiliar, we offer a summer lunch-and-activities program at no charge to school-aged kids in Thomaston and the surrounding communities. Kids can attend for one, some, or all days, and pre-registration is not required.

We have a mostly veteran staff this year - Caroline Ward-Nesbit and Missy Harjula will again lead the program, and we are thrilled Hana and Toby will be returning for the third year. Maddie is on her second year with us, and we are super excited to welcome Delia to the team!

Info Session

Join us on Friday, May 25 at 6 pm for an information session for parents, grandparents, and other caregivers for kids interested in attending the program this summer! We will give an overview of some of the activities we have planned, answer questions, fill out emergency contact forms in advance, and and meet some of our team.

Spaghetti Supper

Help support 40 Days of Summer by joining us for our third annual delicious Spaghetti Supper at Thomaston Federated Church at 8 Hyler Street on May 24th from 5 - 6 pm! $8 per person, and kids under 10 are free.

Storage Trailer or Shed Needed

Do you have or know someone who has a storage trailer or portable shed they would be willing to loan us for the summer? You would be more than welcome to advertise your business as a sponsor of our program on the side of the trailer or shed. Outdoor storage is incredibly helpful in making sure our activities go smoothly and efficiently.

Presenters Wanted

Do you have a fun skill or interest that you would love to introduce to a new generation of kids from ages 6 to 14? We've got your audience! We would love to have community members come in to engage with the 40 Days of Summer kids with hands-on activities. If you have some wisdom to share and are available on a weekday between 11 am and 1 pm this summer, call or email us!

Volunteers Needed

We are also in need of volunteers to help staff our circulation desk while Caroline and Missy run 40 Days of Summer! Do you like helping people? Ever wanted to get a glimpse of the "behind-the-scenes" workings of a library? We need friendly folks for weekdays from 11 am to 1 pm. No library experience needed. Call or email us!

Financial Support

This wonderful program wouldn't be possible without financial support from the community. Donations are always welcome.

Upcoming Events

May 8: Let's Talk About It Book Club

Funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and facilitated by author and mentor Lee Heffner, the Let's Talk About It book group will meet on Tuesday, May 8 at 11 am. We will discuss what Kirkus Reviews describes as a "vivid account of the tragedies and triumphs of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the concurrent depravities of America’s first serial killer," Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America. Copies of the book are available to borrow at the library.

From the publisher:

"Bringing Chicago circa 1893 to vivid life, Erik Larson's spellbinding bestseller intertwines the true tale of two men--the brilliant architect behind the legendary 1893 World's Fair, striving to secure America's place in the world; and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction."

This discussion group is always lively and compelling, and we welcome anyone to join for one book or the whole series. Light refreshments are served.

The next book in the series will be The Gilded Age by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner. This book, according to Modern Library Classics, was "arguably the first major American novel to satirize the political milieu of Washington, D.C. and the wild speculation schemes that exploded across the nation in the years that followed the Civil War, [and] gave this remarkable age its name."  For questions or additional information, please contact the library at 354-2453 or check our social media sites.

May 11: Special Let's Talk Book Club at Bartlett Woods

We have partnered with Bartlett Woods retirement community to hold a special Let's Talk About It Book Club on Friday, May 11 at 10:30 am at their facility at 20 Bartlett Drive in Rockland! We will discuss Poland Spring: A Tale of the Gilded Age by David L. Richards, a captivating account of Maine's own Poland Spring, which was once known more for luxurious summer hotels than bottled water. This event is open to the community as well as Bartlett Woods residents. Lee Heffner will facilitate. In the event of high interest in this series at the community, we may hold a regular Let's Talk book group there as well as the usual second Tuesday meeting at the library. Join us!

The sequel to the much loved Finding Nemo is an epic undersea adventure filled with imagination, humor, and heart. When Dory, the forgetful blue tang (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), suddenly remembers she has a family who may be looking for her, she, Marlin, and Nemo take off on a life-changing quest to find them…with help from Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Bailey, a beluga whale who’s convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark! Dive into the movie overflowing with unforgettable characters, dazzling animation, and gallons of fun!

Free and open to all, and pajamas are welcome! RSVP on our Facebook page or by calling us at 354-2453 so we can order enough pizza for everyone.

May 15: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday, May 15th, at 2:30 PM, the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will discuss Unearthed: Love, Acceptance, and Other Lessons from an Abandoned Garden by Alexandra Risen.

In this generous, poignant memoir, the Canadian essayist chronicles how she and her husband decided to buy the “anonymous hidden house” with the overgrown garden shortly after her always-silent father died. The house was the least of their renovation worries, however; it was the jungle-like garden that they knew would make the greatest demands on their time and budget. Yet the author relished the challenge, in part because the one-acre plot—located minutes from downtown Toronto—made her feel closer to the gardener-mother who always seemed to keep her at arm's length. Risen hoped the garden would help her to better understand her hard-shelled Ukrainian-born parents.

As she began her landscape renovation project, her mother’s health declined rapidly. Risen soon realized that she would never be able to share her garden with her too-frail, increasingly demented mother. The more that Risen worked on her garden, the more she realized that her task was not to transform it into a neatly manicured landscape but one that respected the local ecology. Learning to bring sustainable order to her patch of earth as well as uncovering family documents that offered clues to her parents’ difficult early lives helped the author come to terms with her mother and father. She could not change the people who raised her; she could only accept them and know that they “did the best they could.”

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on May 15th at 2:30  p.m.   If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

In June, the group will be discussing Come Spring by Ben Ames Williams, which Kirkus Reviews describes as "a long, leisurely novel of a remote settlement in Maine, a settlement so isolated that the War of Independence was only known by hearsay. A tale of pioneers, ordinary people in an ordinary frontier life, of sturdy spirits and enduring patience of a love that was greater than the events that held the lovers apart, of a happy marriage and the seasonal round and recurrent promise."

May 18: Communi-TEA!

Join us for afternoon tea on May 18 from 3 to 4:30 PM! Delicious treats and hot tea will be served, and all are welcome in the community living room at Thomaston Public Library.

We would also like to encourage folks to support their neighbors by bringing to Communi-TEA a non-perishable food, pet care, or personal care item to donate to the food pantry!

May 21: Beekeeping Basics

We are thrilled Jean Vose, Program Director of the Knox-Lincoln County Beekeepers, and Thomaston's own Peter Lammert will be joining us on May 21 from 6 - 7:30 pm for a presentation on Beekeeping Basics! They will have equipment to show us and years of experience to share. If you have ever been curious about bees or beekeeping, don't miss this!

May 24: Spaghetti Supper

Don't forget about our Spaghetti Supper on Thursday, May 24 from 5 - 6 pm at Thomaston Federated Church to support our 40 Days of Summer program! Enjoy delicious spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread with your neighbors for a mere $8 per person and kids under 10 can eat free.

May 25: 40 Days of Summer Info Session

If you are a parent or caregiver of a child who is interested in attending our 40 Days of Summer program, join us on Friday, May 25 at 6 pm! Meet some of our team and find out more about this fantastic and fun program!

Bookmobile Home Delivery Service

Some folks may be aware that we offer a Bookmobile Home Delivery Service, but many are not... We have obtained a grant to fund this service for people in Thomaston and some of the surrounding communities who are unable to come to the library due to disability (short- or long-term) or age. We have a new brochure to advertise the Bookmobile available at the library, or we would be happy to email it to anyone who would like a copy. Help us spread the word if you or someone you know is unable to visit us at the library and could benefit from a visit from our Bookmobile!
