Kirkwood Community College Saves $259k per Semester in Labor Expenses

To save energy, Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, required each department to enter schedules for each section of each class into their HVAC controls. It was a tedious and time-consuming process, with no way to copy and paste. They were saving energy, but the hours they spent entering schedules were through the roof.

After automating the process with Events2HVAC in 550 rooms on campus last year, Jon Neff, Vice President Technology Services, calculated labor savings as shown below.

Nearly 13,000 hours of scheduling time per semester sounds astronomical. But many people were involved in scheduling, and each class meeting had to be scheduled individually. There were no shortcuts or "recurring meetings." This is exactly why most large facilities do not schedule individual events - the time involved is cost prohibitive.

Now that Kirkwood Community College is using Events2HVAC to automate this process, the people who used to schedule each class in the HVAC controls can focus on more important tasks -- and they are saving just as much energy at a fraction of the cost.

Impressive Results for USC's Events2HVAC Trial

University of Southern California ran a 50-room, 60-day trial of Events2HVAC this winter, pulling schedules from both Ad Astra and EMS and sending commands to their Honeywell EBI controls.

Craig Shultenburg, Building Control Systems Manager, said they saved an average of $1,000 per week in energy expenses across the 19 AHUs serving the test rooms. He calculated energy savings using horsepower ratings of the AHUs converted to KW, and accumulated run-time hours. Results were then compared to baseline data. That's more than $8,000 in energy savings for a $500 trial!

Today, USC has 240 classrooms in Events2HVAC, with plans to add more soon.

ENERGY ANALYTICS
This summer we will be working on adding run-time savings reports to Events2HVAC to help users determine energy savings. If you have ideas about how this should be implemented, please share them with us at support@events2hvac.com
Events2HVAC Is Not Just for Colleges
Most of the data we share about Events2HVAC comes from implementations at colleges and universities because many of them have personnel who are focused on cutting expenses. But there are many other types of facilities using Events2HVAC:
  • Churches, such as Fellowship Greenville (SC), and Magnolia Church (CA)
  • K-12 schools, such as Wicomico County Public Schools (MD) and Tigard Tualatin Public Schools (OR)
  • Government facilities such as the Kansas City Convention Center and the Washington Department of Ecology
  • Corporations, such as BAE Systems (NJ)
Any type of facility that schedules building spaces for use can benefit from Events2HVAC.
