Village Market E-News for April 28th, 2018

FARMER TALK --  Lit by the early morning sun, Village Market farmers Rowan Lanigan, Mike Lanigan and Jim Giffen, sharing a quiet chat before the Market opened and things got busy last Saturday April 21st.

Mervyn, Linda, Akemi, Anup, Rose, Dael, etc.

Mervyn Fogelman -- had some help last Saturday from granddaughter Morgan (photo at left). Great to see how the Village Market brings the generations together over food! Mervyn will be at the Village Market this Saturday as usual with dried fruit, samosas, herbs and spices.

Linda of Country Meadows -- olives, olive oil, eggs, sheep and goat cheese -- will be back this Saturday after having been away two weeks. Hopefully her greenhouse plants will have started to grow by now, now that we finally have some warm sunny weather, but they may still not be here for the first week in May, as they usually are. We'll have to see what Linda says about it.

Jewelry Maker Akemi hasn't been here in a while but she'll be at the Market this Saturday April 28th. Look for her in the front hallway next to Dael.

Financial Planner Anup Ruparella, of Affinity Capital will be at the Market this Saturday to talk about greening your investments. Do you know what your money is doing?

Rose, of Wholesome Generation comes every other week to the Market and this is her week to be here.

Dael Wilson, of Osoleo, was at the Market last week for the first time in a long time, and we're expecting him back again this Saturday with more local organic juice, apples, and religious artefacts from Tibet, etc.

Alexi Bracey, maker of raw sweets and savouries, will be back again this Saturday with more of her ever-popular creations.

Changing of the Guard April 28th, 10:30 am

Please join us at 10:30 am to officially welcome Brooke Scott and Dave Nelson into their new roles as operators and managers of the Village Market, starting May 1st. If you need to get in touch with the new managers, you can email them at mgrvillagemarket@gmail.com

We'll be sharing one of Vitold's legendary carrot cakes to mark the occasion, and also saying goodbye to Richard Chomko, the current market manager, who will not really be going anywhere because he lives just around the corner, and will still be wanting to eat local organic and biodynamic produce to stay healthy, and will be dropping by often to meet friends.

Genesis of the Village Market

Village Market co-founder Helene Gross has said that she will come by for the occasion to say a few words. The Village Market was started by Helene and her brother-in-law Desmond in the autumn of 1991. It was inspired by the Michael Mount Market, which provided a substantial support for the Waldorf school in Capetown, South Africa, which is where Helene and Desmond are from.

Richard was not the first manager of the Village Market. There were 3 or 4 other managers before he took over in 1994, including Jean Thomas-Hawkes, Juan Escobar and Nancy Rikley. Jean was for many years the public face of the Waldorf School Association of Ontario and the Rudolf Steiner Centre, and she ran a bookstore for the WSAO, which is now the Paper Pipet.

The Village Market was founded to provide a non-tuition-based income stream for the Toronto Waldorf School, and to encourage local organic and biodynamic farming. Since 1991, interest in organic eating has grown substantially, and there are now many more local stores carrying organic produce, and many more farmers market across the GTA where organic farmers can sell direct to the people who want their food.

For the past several years, the Village Market has generated $25,000 a year in income for the Toronto Waldorf School. Over the lifetime of the Market so far, the school has received well in excess of $250,000 from the Village Market. The Market's contribution to TWS is recognized on the school's website on the Major Donors page.

Early Farmers Who Are Still Here Now

Farmers who were at the Market from the beginning and are still here include Gaille Lieberthal and Michael Schmidt. Although Michael Schmidt's Glencolton Farms was here at the start of the Market and is here again now, he did take a few years off in between, to work on getting raw milk legalized in Canada.

Farmer Mike Lanigan started in the summer of 1994, about the same time Richard did, and has been here just about every Saturday since then. In all those years Mike has never had an unplanned absence from the Market. And the only time his farm wasn't represented at the Market was when he felt he needed to take a second week off after Christmas, which he hasn't been doing in recent years, since his son, Rowan joined the family farm as a full-time farmer.
