Townshippers' News | May 2018

May is almost here...and it's about time! This is the month of change for the team at Townshippers'. A lot of our activities wrap up in May and June for the summer months, and we'll start planning for the newly re-imagined edition of Townshippers’ Day – rebranded as Festival des Townshippers Festival – on Saturday, September 29, 2018, 10 am to 4 pm, at Richmond Regional High School. Feel free to drop us a line at ta@townshippers.org and let us know your favourite way of keeping in touch with us!

Our community calendar is down while it gets a much needed facelift. In the meantime, follow us on Facebook for our events and if you have community events, let us know, we'll do our best to share them!

Théâtre Lac-Brome: MICHEL PAGLIARO @ Théâtre Lac-Brome
 Tickets

May 5 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Born in 1948, Montreal musician Michel Pagliaro has always been on a quest for exceptional musicians. Throughout his journey, he has shared musical adventures and friendships with many artists, musicans and technicians and he has participated in artistic projects in the role of musician, arranger, producer and engineer on both sides of the Atlantic.
He first stepped into a recording studio in 1965, discovering a passion for sound recording and production. Since then, as a creator, he has composed, written and recorded several timeless hits that are beloved by anglophones and francophones alike. He has been awarded presitigious prizes for many of these songs.
The road beckons…
His love for live performances keeps him on the stage where he shares his songs with pleasure, accompanied by musicans, matching his spirit, to deliver an Electric dose of rock to his audience—and on Acoustic nights, PAG revisits his musical adventure in a intimate and joyous atmosphere.

CHOROMONDO WORLD MUSIC WOMEN’S CHOIR

CHOROMONDO, founded in 1999 by director, Allyna Harris, is an international world music women’s choir in residence at the Haskell Library and Opera House on the Canada/USA border of Quebec and Vermont.
Rehearsals are weekly September to June, Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 pm.
Director’s fees are paid three times a year and include all materials and a donation to the Haskell Library.
The choir is made of singers from both sides of the border, anglophone and francophone, a community of women from all walks of life who share their joy of singing music from around the world.
Choromondo is a non auditioned group and all women who join are encouraged and supported no matter their level of experience. All songs are taught by singing them and although the ability to read music is an asset, it is not a requirement. Rehearsals early in the season include vocal exercises and vocal play – building stronger singers, confidence and flexibility.
Over the years the choir has sung about 300 songs from more than 50 different countries and music traditions with a special interest in traditional harmonies of the Balkans and South Africa.

Medical conference: Central mechanisms driving OA-induced chronic pain @ Auditorium, local 2458 Hôpital et centre d’hébergement D’Youville
Wed May 2 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Auditorium, local 2458, Hôpital et centre d’hébergement D’Youville, 1036 Belvedere sud, Sherbrooke

Osteoarthritis (OA), including post-traumatic OA (PTOA), is the most common disability in Canada, causing chronic pain in millions of Canadians. Despite this, current pain management strategies for this disease are largely ineffective. Although mechanisms underlying joint pathology in OA are becoming better understood, whether there are upstream or central mechanisms that could potentially contribute to pain, especially in PTOA, remains unclear.
The objective of this study was to assess allodynia in a model of PTOA (Anterior Cruciate Ligament transection) as well as in three control groups, including Sham surgery (n=7), Uninjured mice (n=4), and a model of neuropathic pain where allodynia is already well described (Spared Nerve Injury (SNI, n=8).

Elsie’s Edwardian Garden: Putting Trial and Error to Work in Grand-Métis

By Alexander Reford

The Edwardian Garden signifies a movement in garden design that celebrates both architecture and perennial plantings and is a happy medium between the floral bombast of the Victorian era and the modernist gardens of the 1930s. Elsie Reford was a garden pioneer who adapted the vocabulary of the Edwardian period to the unique growing conditions of the Lower St. Lawrence, transforming her fishing camp on the Metis River into one of the largest and most ambitious private gardens of her time. Open today as Les Jardins de Métis, they are one of Canada ‘s premier garden destinations.
Blessed with immaculate timing and a long life, Elsie Reford began gardening in the 1920s, at precisely the moment when many of the most interesting perennials were being introduced to horticulture by plant explorers in Tibet and the Himalayas. Through decades of trial and error, over time she was successful in incorporating many of these new introductions to her gardens.
Weaving the story of Elsie Reford’s gardens through a unique archive of historic photographs and recently uncovered documents, her great-grandson Alexander Redford, director of Les Jardins de Métis (Reford Gardens), will present the unique story of this horticultural innovator.
