It's only a week until the Meet!
We are a short week away from the 3rd Annual Railway Modellers Meet of BC May 4th to 6th at SFU Burnaby Campus. We are looking forward to seeing everyone’s models in the display room, attending the clinics, luncheon, operating sessions and layout tours.
Registrations are still coming in so you still have time to sign up if you have not yet done so. And if you are a last minute type of person, you can even sign up on site at the meet. We will have a registration desk for last minute registrants, as well as to hand out registration packages to those who are not participating in the Friday operating sessions and layout tours.
BYOSI (Bring Your Own Soldering Iron) Hands On Soldering Clinic
If you want to improve your soldering abilities then you don’t want to miss this clinic presented by Greg Madsen. Greg will demonstrate best practice techniques for two of the most common model railway soldering applications: track to power bus feeders and decoder installations.
The clinic will have soldering stations where attendees can use their own soldering irons and supplies so they can practice with their own tools from home. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from an expert with years of experience. Your model railway will be the better for it. The full clinic lineup is here.
Luncheon and Keynote Presentation by Bernard Kempinski
There is still time to sign up for the Sunday luncheon, offering a tasty lunch for meet attendees. After the lunch and short NMRA 7th Division presentation we’ll be treated to Bernard Kempinski’s Keynote presentation “High Tech Approaches Applied to a 19th Century Railroad”. Bernard’s presentation will cover the application of laser cutters, 3D printing, photo etching, battery power and casting techniques to model an unusual U.S. Civil War era steam prototype.
Enjoy the camaraderie with your fellow modellers over good food, and follow it up with an interesting presentation on what is possible with today’s technology and tools. You don’t need to attend the luncheon to see Bernard’s presentation, but seating choices might be limited for latecomers.
Layout Tours
If you want to go on the layout tour don’t delay in registering. The Railway Modellers Meet has a great selection of layouts participating in the layout tour this year. The focus is on layouts in the Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam), New Westminster and Burnaby this year. There is something of interest for everyone. Take advantage of this opportunity to visit layouts that will be sure to get you motivated to get going on your own layout. We are planning to offer each person who has signed up for the tour an individualized digital map of the various layouts on the tour, so we ask those who plan to take part in the tour to register early so we can ensure that everyone gets their digital map prior to the tour. Those who wish to have a paper copy of the map, or who have any questions about the self-guided tour can contact the layout tour coordinator here.
Display Room
Don’t forget to bring your models, tools and research materials to show to other meet attendees in the model display room. Take advantage of this opportunity to see other people’s interests and approaches to the hobby. You might come away with a new idea, tool or technique to apply to your own models and layout.
