Green Growth and Regional Cooperation Side Event on the sidelines of the ADB Annual Meeting in Manila

On May 4, GGGI will hold a side event on the sidelines of the 51st Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila. This flagship event is aimed at examining opportunities and challenges in mainstreaming green growth such as enabling policies to mobilize green investments, address poverty and ensure sustainability while promoting economic cooperation among countries in the context of regional cooperation, such as along the proposed Belt and Road route. 

Officially launched in May 2016 at the first Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, China aims to invest USD150 Billion in the next 5 years to support projects, which will help address significant regional infrastructure gaps in agriculture, water management, electric power, communications, and transport of the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) route. GGGI supports China’s commitment to align the objectives of the Initiative with the development goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Seventh Meeting of the GGGI Management and Program Sub-Committee (MPSC) held in Seoul

Chaired by Norway (represented by Ms. Vedis Vik, Senior Adviser, Department for Climate Change, Ministry of Climate and Environment), the Seventh Meeting of the Management and Program Sub-Committee (MPSC) was held at GGGI’s Seoul headquarters on April 24-25. The Seventh Meeting of the MPSC was attended by participants from Australia, Costa Rica, Norway, the Republic of Korea and Rwanda, as well as observers from Denmark, Fiji, Hungary, Jordan, Paraguay, Qatar and the United Kingdom.

The meeting kicked off with the Progress Report from the Director-General whereby the Institute highlighted the results achieved in the year 2017, gave an update on the progress made on developing green policies, and shared its success last year in mobilizing green finance. The Director-General’s Progress Report presentation was followed by the review of Financial Statements, Work Program and Budget 2018, and Work Program and Budget 2019-2020: Planning Directions.

The Institute also delivered a presentation on the results achieved in the context of its Work Program and Budget in 2017, showcasing key results in strengthening green growth policies, mobilizing green investments, and sharing green growth knowledge. There were presentations on Reclassification of LDC Country Category: The Case for Vulnerable Countries, Draft Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Action Plan, Thought Leadership and Green Growth Knowledge Platform and Recent Evaluation Findings and Lessons.

GGGI takes part in the P4G meeting and the NCE Summit of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate

Mahua Acharya, GGGI’s Assistant Director-General and Head of Investment and Policy Solutions Division attended the P4G Board of Directors meeting and the NCE 2018 Summit of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate on April 19-20 in Washington, D.C.

At the NCE Summit 2018, there was a high-level discussion on ways to accelerate sustainable green growth, meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement on Climate Action and deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. During the discussion, global leaders urged to pay closer attention to country-level sectoral work and they exchanged ideas on how energy, infrastructure, cities, food, land-use, water and industry systems can drive economic growth and climate action.

As a partner of P4G, GGGI took part in the inaugural P4G Board of Directors meeting to provide inputs to guide the strategic vision for P4G and how it can best facilitate and support new models for sustainable development.

GGGI Indonesia and Mexico teams take part in a South-South Knowledge Exchange event

The GGGI Indonesia and Mexico teams together with representatives of Política y Legislación Ambiental, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Mexico and Indonesia’s Lembaga Administrasi Negara (LAN) held a South-South Knowledge Exchange event on April 10-13. During the event, there was an opportunity for participants to discuss ways to promote green growth in Mexico, learn how Mexico is addressing climate change in the country and share views on the Mexican experience in sustainable community forest management. The discussion revolved around linking green growth, sustainable mobility, transport policy and urban resilience through the South-South cooperation.
 
In addition, participants, including the members of the GGGI Indonesia and Mexico teams had a chance to learn about the Mexico City’s bicycle mobility strategy and its implementation plans and the importance of promoting and executing clean energy projects. 

This South-South Knowledge Exchange event served as a platform for sharing experience and insights on best practices on green growth, public policies for sustainable mobility and transport.

Protected Forest as a Source of Energy

Indonesia's Forestry and Environmental Research, Development and Innovation Agency (FOERDIA) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry hosted a media trip on April 19 attended by representatives of the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), the provincial government, the district government, related government offices as well as media partners and GGGI as a development partner, to showcase results of Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHP) projects in four villages in the area of Lampobattang Forest, Bulukumba District, South Sulawesi. The MHPs were developed by the technical implementation unit of FOERDIA, namely the Center for Environmental and Forestry Research and Development (CEFRD) Makassar.

Senggang, Katimbang, Kayu Biranga dan Na’na were off-grid villages with no electricity. Since the development of MHP, the four villages have enjoyed the many benefits of electricity. The plant utilizes the abundant and constant flow of river water originating from the protected forest, which provide 7.5 kilowatts of electric power for eight families in Senggang, 5 kilowatts for 15 families in Katimbang, 15 kilowatts for 47 families in Kayu Biranga, and 20 kilowatts for 43 families in Na’na. The MHPs have also helped ensure sustainable forest management and continuous community development.

On April 12, the GGGI Colombia team met with Governor of Antioquia Mr. Luis Gomez Gutierrez to establish a new partnership, within the framework of the Sub-National Green Growth Program partnered with the Norwegian government. The Governor of Antioquia has agreed to join this partnership, and to review a list of priorities for the region through his chief secretaries of planning, environment, and agriculture. As a follow up, GGGI will work on three strategic lines of tasks with the government, which are composed by 1) development of green growth planning tool, 2) structuring bankable project, and 3) capacity building of local officials on green growth.
