APRIL 2018 UPDATE

The GOL! gang is thrilled to welcome Clara Belle Wanless as the newest Get Outdoors Leadville! team member. This is undoubtedly the most exciting news of the month around the GOL! offices! Congratulations to Becca Katz, GOL!’s Community Learning Director, and husband Eric as they embark on their grand parenting adventure!

Rockies Rock enrollment is filling up fast! Don’t miss out on a great day camp experience for your kids this summer - register today! We will have loads of exploring, biking, and environmental education again this year, plus fly fishing instruction with Trout Unlimited and a new hiking progression, too. Our theme is Mt. Elbert and we’ll be learning more about the magic of our massive Lake County mountains throughout camp!

Save the date! We are partnering with the National Forest Foundation, US Forest Service, Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps to host a family camping weekend at Mt. Elbert on July 21st-22nd. Folks from age 8 to age 108 are invited to become an Elbert Explorer and join in the weekend of stewardship, learning, and fun! Fill out the interest form here, and check out the flyer below for more ways to get involved with Elbert efforts this summer.

Happy trails,

--the GOL! team

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

GOL!-LCSD

West Park 1st Graders continued their learning expedition bird studies, focusing on care of birds and their habitats. Woodpeckers are a popular bird with this bunch. They have been designing and painting birdhouses to hang around West Park to invite more birds to the school grounds.

Wilderness Experience students headed out for their 6-day capstone canyoneering trip in Cedar Mesa, Utah. They were all smiles loading up the morning of departure. We can’t wait to hear all about their adventures and learning when they’re back!

GOL! was also happy to help support The Center’s ski program this season. Can’t wait until these kiddos are old enough to join in the Winter Adventure Days fun in future years!

Full Circle's Familias Juntas

Familias Juntas spent a beautiful afternoon fishing at Hayden Meadows on April 19th. Thanks to Greater Arkansas River Nature Association for providing engaging educational activities for all! Familias Juntas has lots of fun outings planned in the coming months ~ contact Patty at golfamily@fullcircleleadville.org to learn more and get involved.

Community Gear Library Update & Community Design Discussions

Thanks to all who joined the final community input sessions for the Gear Library on April 17th. The community input has been truly invaluable and the vision is getting sharper through your insights! Architectural Workshop's building designs are now finalized and out for construction bid. We're still aiming for ground breaking this summer!

Additionally, HUGE thank you to the Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation Board for its generous support of the Gear Library construction! The Legacy Board awarded GOL! $10,000 through their Legacy Grants program to help build the new facility. We are so grateful for this investment in this permanent resource for the Lake County community that will help inspire and enable outdoor adventuring for years and years to come through its workshops and equipment lending.
  THANK YOU Legacy Foundation!
