50th Anniversary AGM & Conference

Many thanks to everyone who attended our AGM & Conference in Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the society.

It was a fitting way to mark the 50th; a weekend of celebration and commemoration as we honoured the past while looking toward a bright future.

The movie premiere on Friday night was very moving and we think you'll agree that Goran has done an amazing job, distilling 50 years of the society into just over an hour of film, and it is an absolute triumph.

On Saturday morning, Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD officially opened the AGM which was followed by a series of very interesting, informative and engaging sessions on the iPath, Perceptions of the I.H.S. and History of the Society.

The Service of Commemoration and Through the Generations session on Sunday morning were both touching and very emotional.

Meanwhile, The Mad Hatter's Tea Party on Saturday afternoon went down a treat as did the young member's fantastic movie, which preceded the awards and Gala Dinner.

Last but certainly not least, a special thanks to all the volunteers, without their dedicated and Trojan work, we couldn't make events like this what they are.

We felt it was a special weekend and hope you did too!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone throughout the year as we continue to celebrate the I.H.S.'s 50th Anniversary. #IHS50

World Haemophilia Day 2018

2018 is a momentous year for the I.H.S. as it marks the 50th Anniversary of the society and as such, to mark the occasion, we had an extremely busy but productive World Haemophilia Day (WHD).

The day kicked off bright and early with I.H.S. pair, Brian O’Mahony and Seamus McDonald appearing on Ireland AM to speak about the development of Haemophilia care in Ireland over the last 50 years.

The WHD celebrations continued with the unveiling of a street art project on Macken Street, Dublin 2 and in St. James’s Hospital. Reflecting the personal experience of patients and nurses from St James’s Hospital, the two artworks, commissioned by the Irish Haemophilia Society in partnership with Roche, were developed by artist Shane O’Malley to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the I.H.S.

Meanwhile, in Kerry, there was a non-uniform day at St Brendan’s National School in Blennerville, Tralee. Staff and pupils turned out in red to mark the day with some students tasked with teaching staff and pupils all about haemophilia and how it affects junior infants students Adam and Grace Roche.

A grand total €710 was raised between Blennerville National School, Tralee Musical Society and Leighton Bellinger at Hurcles Gym. A massive thank you to Rebecca Roche for organising and helping to raise awareness of haemophilia and funds for the society.

The day concluded as a series of prominent buildings in Ireland, joined others across the globe, in lighting up red at night to mark WHD. This year, the buildings included Liberty Hall, The Dublin Convention Centre, RCSI, The CHQ Building, Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, The Mansion House, The National Concert Hall, The Civic Offices at Wood Quay The Capitol Building, Cork City and Cork City Hall.

It was a very busy day by all involved but totally worth it and there are some fabulous photographs from WHD2018, which you can see here.

Jason Rossiter wins Wexford Garda Youth Award

A huge congratulations to young I.H.S. member Jason Rossiter on winning Co. Wexford Garda Youth Award.

Nominated by his teacher Ms. Aoife Griffin because of his passionate love for sports, 5th Class student Jason is extremely active and an avid sportsman. His favorite sport is hurling, he is the captain of his soccer team (and has also traveled to Stoke City FC to play in their football academy twice) and plays handball too.

On the night of the awards, Jason spoke to the crowd about his haemophilia and explained his determination to not let it hold him back. As Jason's teacher, Ms. Aoife Griffin put it so eloquently; "Yes, Jason has haemophilia but haemophilia doesn’t have him. Life is for living and Jason certainly lives by that motto."

We hope to have more on Jason and his award winning ways in the next issue of our Magazine but we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jason on winning the award - what a fantastic achievement!
