WOODCLIFF MESSENGER APRIL 20, 2018

It is Earth Day on Sunday. It is a day to celebrate this amazing planet that is our home. It is a day to wonder, to reflect and to recommit to caring for our little corner of the universe. Our United Church creed says, in part:

We are not alone,
we live in God's world.
We believe in God,
who has created and is creating, ...
We are called to be the Church,
... to live with respect in creation, ...

Living with respect in creation is part of our faith journey. In creation, we see God revealed each and every day. I've been watching the  rabbits in our neighbourhood slowly transform from winter white to spring brown. Somehow, in their being, a timer says spring is here, it's time for a new colour. The robins reappear. The green shoots emerge responding to the longer days. Each reveals their connection to the earth, to the sun, to the cycle of life. Take a moment to reflect and wonder. What does each sign of spring teach about our creator God who has created and is creating?

It is not just the rabbits and the robins who are connected. We too are connected to the cycle of life. We depend on the earth to nourish our bodies. We depend on clean water to drink. We depend on the earth to be a firm foundation for our homes. We depend on the sun and the rain. In creation, each precious gift is linked to another. There is nothing in creation that stands alone. That means that every time we make a choice to support a healthy planet, we make a choice to promote our own health.

This year the theme for Earth Day is 'End Plastic Pollution.' The goals include ending single-use plastics, promoting alternatives to fossil fuel-based materials, promoting 100 percent recycling of plastics, corporate and government accountability and changing human behavior concerning plastics. Within this goal are many simple actions we each can take. We can refuse plastic straws in our drinks. We can refuse plastic bags when we shop. We can pick up plastics when we walk or run so that animals don't get harmed by them. We can stop buying water in plastic bottles. We can support lobbying efforts that call for wiser ways to package products and to dispose of waste.

Each of us can make better choices to live with respect in creation. This Earth Day, I invite you to reflect on what you can do. Make a promise to yourself and then do your part. The earth is our home. Let's take care of it.

We are together on the journey. We are not alone, thanks be to God.

MINUTE FOR MISSION

Bringing Kids to Nature

Our gifts for Mission & Service support inner-city programs for children, like Camp Cosmos run by Montreal City Mission.

An 11-year-old girl has new respect for her 9-year-old brother with special needs thanks to the environmental summer day camp.

Eden Haber, Assistant Director of Camp Cosmos, learned about the experience from their mother. Before the camp, the girl felt ashamed of her brother, says Eden. At the camp she was able to see how he interacted with other campers and how they enjoyed being with him, and her attitude changed. “She came out of the camp saying she was proud to have him as her brother.”

This is just one example of how Camp Cosmos brings together children: those with special needs and those without; kids who have lived in Canada their whole lives and refugees who arrived a month ago; children from different economic backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. “It’s a good opportunity for kids to integrate with other kids,” says Eden.

An environmental focus is fundamental. It’s reflected practically, as the camp tries to achieve zero waste through recycling and composting. “These kids are growing up downtown and don’t have a tangible connection with the environment,” says Eden. The camp provides that. Campers learn through ecological games, organic gardening, outings in nature, and visits to local farms.

Montreal City Mission, through Camp Cosmos, offers children and youth an appreciation of nature and a place to learn leadership skills that will help them become caring adults working for a better world.

Mission & Service is the heart and soul of The United Church of Canada. If you already give, thank you so much. If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
