Beyoncé and Rihanna aren’t the only ones dropping new merch. Britney Spears also announced that she’s rolling out a whole lifestyle brand including clothes, makeup, exercise gear, and electronics (?). Cross your fingers that the collection includes her iconic denim gown; but first, get the news.

💁 Yesterday, the New York Times published a big ol' report about workplace inequality. Among their findings? In top jobs—leadership roles in industries like law, business, and tech—there are almost as many men named John as there are women. (No surprise that white men in particular hold most of these coveted positions.) This is why initiatives like Tory Burch’s #EmbraceAmbition Summit—which juuust happened and you can watch here—are so important. As speaker Yara Shahidi said, "Equity is something that is achieved when we acknowledge everyone as having been inalienably given the right to exist and the right to thrive.”
🍆 During this week’s nationwide event called The Sex Ed Sit Out, parents pulled their kids out of school to protest “graphic, gender-bending sex education.” (Meanwhile, a student organization called Advocates for Youth held a counter-protest by providing youth-led sex education on social media with the hashtag #SexEdLive. Awesome.) Thing is, research shows that sex ed actually isn’t “graphic” or “gender-bending” enough. And now the Trump administration is trying to make it even harder for LGBTQ kids to learn about safe sex. This is...not safe.
👗 It’s been exactly five years since a fast fashion clothing factory in Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1,000 workers. So why hasn’t more changed?! Nearly half of the nation’s factories still pose life-threatening risks to workers—including children—and according to an NYU study, governments and companies need to do more to fix that. But Fashion Revolution Week (happening now) also wants customers to be accountable by asking the question, “Who made my clothes?” You don’t have to stop shopping altogether, but do your research before splurging. Here’s one way to start.
🧓 One more reason not to worry about getting older (no matter *what* society tells us): According to a new study, age is the ultimate natural stress reliever. Researchers examined 3,000 women aged 42-53 over a 15-year period and found that their perceived level of stress decreased over that time span—across basically all racial and socioeconomic categories. “Perhaps life itself is becoming less stressful, or maybe we're finally feeling at the top of our game, or maybe things just don't bother us the way they did," the study’s leader said. Either way, older = chiller (and wiser).

Feminism. Eight letters that make me feel full of life, joy, pride, strength, and desire to make an impact. You probably feel it, too. I grew up in two absolutely different countries: the U.S. and Russia. I consider myself a “citizen of the world,” of sorts. I am grateful for all the travels and experiences I have had in my 12 years of living, especially finding feminism. Luckily, my family is not against feminism, but I needed and still need to educate them (and sometimes argue) on issues related to the feminist movement.
But besides my family and friends, there are other people. People who don’t agree with me. People who don’t agree with feminism. People who try to change me.
In Russia, the word “feminist” is still sometimes used as an insult. Feminists are seen as people who betrayed the traditional way of things, and most female feminists are pictured as queer and anti-men.
I'm not saying that women and men are totally equal and everything is great in the United States, but at least there’s a nationwide conversation about women’s and LGBTQ+ rights in America. My struggle is global sexism. My struggle is 130 million girls who are out of school. My struggle is the fact that over 700 million women today were married as children.
I argue with people quite a lot. I don’t want to accept this “tradition,” so I fight back. I probably can’t change everyone’s mind, but I still believe that if you stop fighting and accept the patriarchy, nothing will change. I don’t want to accept patriarchy, I want to empower young women around the world. I want to support my LGBTQ+ friends in Russia when no one else can. But there are people with whom arguing is not something I can or should do, so I educate my relatives about some issues regarding feminism.
My advice to people who experience similar cultural disagreements? Explain feminism to those who don’t understand, but don’t bother fighting with people who disagree. It is so important to remind yourself that even if your family or community disagrees with your beliefs, there are millions of people who do not.
Don’t waste your time and energy on people who don’t believe that the sexes are meant to be equal socially, politically, and economically; they are not worth it. However, your family and friends often don’t understand the idea of feminism, and you might consider talking with them about it. But always, no matter what, remember: the future is female and there are millions of people who think so, too.
