Ladies Sailing - Monday 14th May

This is an opportunity for our lady sailors to enjoy an evening on the water, and afterwards weather permitting at the barbeque and in the bar, when all those testosterone fuelled gentleman are not allowed to come and get in the way!

There will be instructors and experienced club members on hand to give advice, help you rig, take you out sailing, or help in any way they can to let you enjoy some time on the water.

The Club boats are available to use or sail your own if you have one.

Contact Jane on jane-hayden@outlook.com if you need any more information, and put the 4th June, 2nd July and 6th August in your diaries as well.
Papercourt Open Day - Saturday 12th May - Your Club Needs YOU

The biggest event of the year at Papercourt is the Open Day, when for each of the last several years we have welcomed 300-400 visitors to our club, to show them how amazing Papercourt is, and each year this results in a fabulous number of new members.  (We need new members to keep us the vibrant club we are).

This many visitors, most of whom are taken out sailing needs a huge input from our existing membership to make the afternoon run smoothly.
Among other things we need to  :-  manage the car parking; meet and greet and register each family; show everyone round; man the jetties; man the safety boats; take visitors out sailing from both the single handed jetty and the two handed jetty; we need class boats rigged on the grass and enthusiasts willing to talk about them; and lastly, but absolutely not leastly we need quantities and quantities of cakes.

There will be sign up sheets in the clubhouse very shortly where you can volunteer for specific jobs or just to be there, and Jeremy Riley and Jeremy Summeray will be pleased to talk to anyone who is not sure if they can be of use - trust me you can be!  Contact Jeremy Riley on Jeremyriley.uk@gmail.com

We offer all our visitors a cup of tea and a piece of cake so if you are able to bake some small cakes or if shopping is more your thing than baking that's fine, but please bring something along on the morning and put them in the rear galley.

There will be some flyers available in the clubhouse shortly - please take some and put them up wherever you think people may see them - schools, workplaces, the gym, anywhere in Surrey that you think people may see them.  Hand them out to all your family and friends and invite them along to share our club and love of sailing with as many people as possible.
Comms from the Commodore
Gate Security:

If you are the first to arrive at the gate, please re-attach the chain and padlock to the gate AND scramble the numbers.

This is for 2 reasons:

1. The padlock will still be there at the end of the day
2.  People walking past won't learn our combination numbers

Club Racing and Upcoming Open Meetings

Don't forget to check your pursuit start times as the new PYN numbers and start sequence has come into effect with the start of the Summer Season for Saturday and Sunday Pursuit Races.  All other races are General Handicap and everyone starts together.

There are several Open Meetings coming up soon when there will be no club racing:
Sunday 29th April - Laser Open Meeting  - see below
Saturday 5th May - Surrey Schools Regatta - no Racing or Youth Training  Saturday 12th May - Open Day - training in the morning, but no racing in the afternoon
Sunday 13th May - Topper Open Meeting

Laser Open - Sunday 29th April

Lunch is included with the entry fee and all Papercourt Laser sailors are reminded to bring a cake for afternoon tea if possible please.  We hope to see as many club Lasers at this event as possible.

In addition to the above there is the:
Surrey Spoon on Monday 7th May  Bank Holiday Team Racing

Our friends from Surrey University are organising a team racing day in Fireflys, for Uni Teams plus anyone from Papercourt who would like to take part.  Don't worry if you don't know how team racing works, there will be a full briefing at 9.30, so arrive in good time before that to make yourselves known to the Uni folk, who will be happy to sort out teams and instructions.
Why not get a team together from your boat class.  Members who have taken part in previous years have all reported back that this is a really fun day and a nice alternative to our usual club racing.

The Work Group

We need more volunteers to join the WORK GROUP.  This is a group of members who help out with any maintenance tasks that need to be undertaken and cannot wait until the two work parties in Spring and Autumn.

The more that join the lighter the work load is on the existing members.

We meet on an add hoc basis to sort out who is going to do what.  Most items can be carried out, by an individual at their own convenience.  Some tasks require small groups.  Nearly everything is a few hours attendance at the club once in a while.  You can decide if you want to do the task and to a large extent what task you want to do.  So if you have a few hours to spare every now and then, please forward your interest to john_Brenda@pantings.plus.com

John Panting - House Chairman

Solo: Thursday Night Sailing

We commence the Thursday night sailing on Thursday 26th April.  Racing starts at 1830 and goes on until the light fades.  We often retire to the Saddlers pub afterwards for a few drinks, food, discussions of the racing, to talk nonsense and for a banquet of fish and chips.  Much like Winter Saturdays, the format of the racing is short courses and plenty of starts.  If you haven't been before, please join us, it is lots of fun and very instructive!

Jonathan Otter, Solo Fleet Captain

A Few New Season Reminders

DOGS - Members are reminded that dogs are not allowed in the clubhouse, or on the lake side of the clubhouse, or in the boat parks.  If you bring your dogs for a walk round the lake, please put them back in the car afterwards.  If every member brought their family pets to the club it would be total canine chaos!

BUOYANCY AIDS - EVERYONE must wear a bouyancy aid in any boat, and on the jetties at all times - even if only assisting with launch and recovery of someone else's boat.

CAR PARKING - The car park has been newly marked out to squeeze in the maximum number of cars - this is particularly important on Saturdays when the club is full to capacity -
please please park considerately within the marked out spaces.
