Entries are Open for the 2018 MYMF!
The Waverley Music Eisteddfod Committee is pleased to announce that entries are open to the 2018 Monash Youth Music Festival! This is our 40th year of music competitions in the City of Monash.

Now with forty eight sections on offer in piano, orchestral strings, woodwind and brass, recorder, vocal, instrumental ensembles, chamber music, recorder groups, primary and senior choirs, as well as non-competitive duets and mini recitals/workshops, there is something for every music student.

Check the FESTIVAL SCHEDULE today and make sure you get your entries into STARDOM early this year. Places in many sections are strictly limited, so get your entries into Stardom early. You can always modify your entry later!  Start practising and good luck!

Instrumental Ensembles
The Instrumental Ensemble and Chamber Music sections will be held in the Orchestral Room of Huntingtower School on Saturday 11 August 2018.

We are delighted to have Dr Mario Dobernig as our adjudicator this year.

This discipline has four sections:

E01 Large Instrumental Ensemble

14 years and under, size 10 through 30 players.

E02 Junior Instrumental Ensemble

15 years and under, 3 to 9 players.

E03 Senior Instrumental Ensemble

18 years and under, 10 to 30 players.

E04 Chamber Music Group

21 years and under, up to 9 players.

Please note that the upper limit of the two Large Instrumental sections, (E01 and E03) is 30 players, but will revert to 40 next year when we hope to have the new Performing Arts Centre.

Ensembles achieving First, Second and Third place in the Chamber Music Group section will be awarded cash prizes, and place winners in the three Instrumental Ensemble sections will receive trophies.

A variety of ensembles enter these sections. In previous years, the two large ensemble sections attracted mostly orchestras and concert bands, but also “Jazz” and “Irish” bands, and a guitar ensemble. The sections for smaller ensembles drew entries from classical piano trios and quintets, string and wind ensembles including a clarinet choir, and a guitar trio.

The Instrumental Ensemble/Chamber Music sections are for acoustic ensembles. Minimum amplification is permitted (see ‘Notes’ in the Schedule). One or two instruments within a large group may be amplified, but this should be kept to a minimum and should not dominate the sound. For example, one might use an electric bass in a concert band, or include an electronic keyboard in an orchestra to cover missing instruments.

Please do not bring your own drum kit, as the venue supplies a drum kit, keyboard and piano.

A sketch stage plan of your ensemble would be greatly appreciated and will help us run things smoothly for you.

For information about the Ensembles disciplines, please contact the Strings and Ensembles Registrar John Wise.

New Mini Recital Series

Duets and Solos

For music students new to eisteddfods and competitions, this year's Music Festival will offer five non-competitive "Mini Recital" sections that give performers the opportunity to perform under similar conditions to our competitive sections, but in a more relaxed atmosphere. Each section concludes with a mini master class. The Mini Recitals Day is set for Sunday August 5.

Duet sections offered this year:

N01 “Two of Us” Duet

Duet, any instrument and/or voice. 14 years & under, any standard

N02 “Two of Us” Duet

Duet, any instrument and/or voice. 18 years & under, any standard

There are also three graded open age solo sections, perfect for novice entrants of any standard:

N03 Solo instrument, including voice

Any age, AMEB Grades 1 – 3 or equivalent*

N04 Solo instrument, including voice

Any age, AMEB Grades 4 – 5 or equivalent*

N05 Solo instrument, including voice

Any age, AMEB Grades 6 +*

You don't have to be doing the AMEB syllabus, but your piece should be of an equivalent standard. Please check with your music teacher if you are not sure.

Do you have a favourite piece of music you are working on? Why not enter the Festival and perform it? There is plenty of time to practice and polish between now and August, so put your entry in as soon as entries open. You gain valuable performance experience, receive a detailed critique sheet, and pride in having performed in public! You get an Adjudicator's report too, so you can see how you went, and this well help you in your preparation for any future music exam or performance.

There will be a piano accompanist on the day, free of charge for you. You will need to send your music score, with accompanist part, to the accompanist no later than July 20. You may organise a rehearsal with the Accompanist, but please note that this is not included in your entry fee.
