CHUMASH

Rishon with Rashi

In today’s Chumash, Hashem gives instructions of how the Kohen Gadol should do his avodah on Yom Kippur to bring forgiveness to the Yidden.

After Nadav and Avihu passed away, Hashem told Moshe to teach Aharon how to act in the Mishkan.

Even if he feels that he wants to be close to Hashem, Aharon is not allowed to go into the Kodesh HaKodoshim whenever he wants to, so that he shouldn’t make the same mistake as his sons did. Inside the Kodesh Hakodoshim, Hashem’s Shechinah rests, on the Aron, and it is asur to go inside unless it is the proper time.

Aharon Hakohen (and every other Kohen Gadol) is only allowed to come into the Kodesh Hakodoshim when he brings the Ketores on Yom Kippur.

Even then, he needs to follow all of the steps of the Yom Kippur Avodah:

He will not be wearing the special clothes of the Kohen Gadol — instead he wears four pieces of white linen clothing, because gold can remind Hashem of the Cheit Ha’Egel. These clothes are holy, and he needs to go to the mikvah every time before he puts them on — it’s not enough that he went to the mikvah in the morning.

First, wearing the special clothes of the Kohen Gadol, he does the regular morning Avodah — bringing the Korban Tomid and ketores, cleaning out the menorah, and bringing his daily Korban Mincha. Then he puts on the Yom Kippur clothing to do the special Yom Kippur Avodah.

The Kohen Gadol first says vidui over a korban that he will bring to Hashem to be forgiven for any aveiros connected to the Mishkan or korbanos.

Then he makes a goral: The Kohen Gadol stands between two goats. He picks two lots from a container, one with his right hand, and one with his left. The side with the lot that says “For Hashem” will be brought as a korban, and the side with the lot that says “For Azazel” will later be sent away to be killed in the desert.

Once the goral is decided, the Kohen Gadol shechts his korban, saving the blood for the next part of the Avodah.

Now that he has asked Hashem to forgive him for his own aveiros, the Kohen Gadol brings the ketores inside of the Kodesh Hakodoshim. Nobody is allowed to be even inside of the Kodesh at this time.

The Kohen Gadol leaves the burning ketores on the floor near the Aron, and goes to get the blood of his korban. He comes back and sprinkles the blood of his korban on the side of the Aron’s cover — one time upwards, and seven times downward.

He then shechts the korban for the Yidden’s aveiros, and brings its blood into the Kodesh Hakodoshim to be sprinkled there too. This will bring Hashem to forgive the Yidden for aveiros they did by eating korbanos or coming into the Mishkan when they weren’t tahor — by mistake or on purpose.

To forgive the Yidden in case they made the Menorah, Shulchan, or Mizbeiach Haketores tomei, the Kohen Gadol then sprinkles blood on the Paroches.

Now we learn how the Kohen Gadol is mechaper for any mistakes with the kedusha of the Mizbeiach Hapnimi, where the ketores was brought. The Kohen Gadol sprinkles the Mizbeiach Hapnimi with the same mixture of blood. This brings Hashem to forgive the Yidden in case the Mizbeiach became tomei by touching something tomei, or if the ketores had become tomei.

Then the Kohen Gadol goes out of the Kodesh and the person chosen the day before brings the goat for Azazel. The Kohen Gadol says vidui, asking forgiveness for all of the aveiros of the Yidden, leaning his hands on the goat’s head. Then he sends the goat to the desert with a kohen, to push the animal off the Azazel cliff. This takes away the aveiros of the Yidden.

The Kohen Gadol takes the fat of the korbanos to be burned on the Mizbeiach. Then he goes to the Mikvah to change back into the clothes of the Kohen Gadol that he wears all year (the Bigdei Zahav). He brings a Korban Olah for himself and for the Yidden. Then he brings seven sheep for the Korban Musaf of Yom Kippur.

TEHILLIM

39 - 43

In Kapitel Mem (40) of Tehillim, we have a posuk that says “Nifle’osecha U’machshevosecha Eileinu, Ein Aroch Eilecha!” “Your nissim and Your thoughts are for us — no one is like You.”

Chassidus explains the meaning of this posuk: “Nifle’osecha U’machshevosecha Eileinu,” all of Hashem’s nissim are for US, meaning that they are incredible only to us. But to Hashem, “Ein Aroch Eilecha” — they are like nothing to You, Hashem!

When we think about the great nissim of Hashem, and how they are like nothing compared to the greatness of Hashem, it will make us feel very small. We will realize how important it is to do exactly what Hashem wants from us, and we will do it with simcha!

TANYA

Likutei Amarim Perek Mem-Hey

We are learning now how to serve Hashem with the right kavana, lishma. The best way to serve Hashem is not because we are used to doing mitzvos, and not because we are expecting to get a reward, but because of feelings of Ahava and Yirah! We learned how to serve Hashem with Ahava and Yirah, and now we are going to learn how to serve Hashem with the midah of Rachmanus. This will help us do our mitzvos in a pure and Ruchinius’dike way — lishma!

We need to think about how Hashem took a part of Himself (the neshama) and put it in a Yiddishe body. In the world where the body is, Hashem is hiding! So in the body, Hashem is in Golus, and especially if the Yid does or thinks things that aren’t appropriate for the piece of Hashem which is inside of the guf.

When we think about this, we will have Rachmonus on our neshama! We will want to help this piece of Hashem inside of us come out of its Golus, through learning Torah and doing mitzvos. This will make the piece of Hashem inside of us (our neshama) happy, because it will be able to reconnect to its source!

This is another way we can learn Torah and do mitzvos lishma.

HAYOM YOM

Zayin Iyar

Today is twenty-two days of the Omer!

When a man puts on his Tallis, he first wraps himself up before putting it just on his head and shoulders. It is our minhag that he covers his face, just past his eyes, with the Tallis.

During Sefiras Haomer, it is our minhag to learn Gemara Mesechta Sotah, that has a page for each day of Sefiras Ha’omer! We learn one page every day.

In today’s page of Gemara Sotah, it talks about not showing off, and making sure that we are the same on the inside and the outside! That is what we work on during Sefiras Haomer — making sure that our inside and outside should be with good midos.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Mitzvas Lo Saasei #308, #307

Today we learn two mitzvos about Tzoraas:

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #308) We are not allowed to cut the hair or burn off the healthy skin of Tzoraas, to make it look like we don’t have the simanim of tumah. We learn this from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei, “Hishamer B’Nega Hatzoraas.”

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #307) We are not allowed to cut off the hair, which is a siman of tumah, from a kind of Tzoraas called a nesek, which is on the hair or beard. We learn this from the posuk in Parshas Tazria, “Ve’es Hanesek Lo Yegaleiach.”

RAMBAM

Hilchos Tumas Tzoraas

In today’s Rambam, we learn about the simanim of tumah for Tzoraas.

Perek Beis: This perek teaches us the halachos about the siman of tumah called “Se’ar Lavan,” white hair in the patch of Tzoraas.

Perek Gimmel: This perek teaches us the halachos about the siman of tumah called “Michya,” which is healthy skin inside the area of Tzoraas. Usually this makes a person Tomei, unless it is at one of the tips of the body — like the tips of the fingers.

Perek Daled: This perek teaches us about the siman of tumah called “Pisyon,” when the patch of Tzoraas gets bigger.

DARKEI HACHASSIDUS

Getting Used to Doing Mitzvos Right

When the Rebbe Rashab turned twelve, he asked his father (the Rebbe Maharash) how he should learn Torah so that he will BEHAVE according to what he is learning.

Based on what his father told him, he decided to learn the halachos of Orach Chayim, and to review each one not only with his mind, but with his body — he practiced DOING the mitzvos right! He wanted his body to get used to keeping each of these halachos.

The Rebbe Rashab told this story to the Friediker Rebbe once when they went together for a walk, and the Rebbe told us this story many times by farbrengens, with the lesson: We should get our bodies used to keeping the mitzvos!

Can you think of a halacha that you can get so used to doing until it becomes automatic? One idea: Making sure that you never go to sleep without negel vasser — just like you don’t forget to put on your pajamas or cover yourself with your blanket!

TEFILLAH

Goel Yisroel

The seventh bracha in Shemoneh Esrei is “Goel Yisroel.” In this bracha, we ask Hashem to free us from all of the problems that keep us from serving Hashem properly. We say “Goel Yisroel,” that Hashem is redeeming us right now!

There are many kinds of tzaros that can make it hard to do our avodah. There might be other people that bother us, feelings we have inside of us, or things we are afraid of. Hashem frees us from all of these problems so we can go do what we need to do!

We say this bracha after Selach Lanu, where we ask Hashem to forgive us. This fits with what it says in Tehillim, that Hashem forgives our aveiros, and then in that zechus redeems us from our tzaros: “Hasoleiach Lechol Avoneichi, Hagoel Mishachas Chayochi.”

Of course, when we have our personal geulah from things that keep us from doing mitzvos, we will be able to bring the Geulah for ALL of the Yidden!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Picking Up Muktza by Mistake

What happens if you pick something up on Shabbos, and then realize that it is muktza? What should you do? Should you drop it right away, or can you put it back down where it belongs?

The halacha depends on what kind of muktza it is!

If it is the kind of muktza called Muktza Kal, the less strict kind of muktza, you can put it down where it belongs. So for example, if you picked up a pen by mistake, you can put it away in it’s proper place.

But if it is the strict kind of muktza, Muktza Chamur, you need to drop it right away! So for example, if you reach into your pocket and pull out a piece of paper, and realize it is a dollar bill, you have to drop it right away! If you need it to go into a safe place, you need to kick it or blow it away. (Of course, we should check our pockets before Shabbos so this kind of thing doesn’t happen!)

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

There Will Be No More Wars

The Navi Yeshaya saw that the Yidden in his time wanted to copy the goyim and act the way they do. He told them nevuos about Moshiach, showing them that even the goyim will realize that the Torah is true. So it is very foolish to copy the goyim, when very soon the goyim will be trying to learn from Yidden and the Torah how to act! We should follow the Torah and mitzvos, which soon everyone will see is true!

This next posuk is a very famous nevuah about Moshiach!

Veshafat Bein HagoyimMoshiach will judge any arguments between the nations of the world

Vehochiach Le’amim Rabim — And will tell many of them to change the way they are acting.

Now the nations won’t have any reason to fight with each other anymore, since Moshiach will have told them what is right and what is wrong! Now what will they do with their weapons?

Vechitsu Charvosam Le’itim — And they will bend their swords into plows for their fields

Vechanisoseihem Lemazmeiros — And they will bend their spears into pruning hooks (poles with a curved knife at the end, to cut off extra branches from trees so they will grow better)!

This means that instead of using their weapons for war, they will use their weapons to help things grow better!

Lo Yisa Goy El Goy Cherev — No nation will lift up their swords to fight with each other anymore,

Velo Yilmedu Od Milchama — And they won’t even learn about or practice fighting, since they will all know that there will NEVER be another war!
