Te Kāhui Taiohi o Taranaki Iwi hold second wānanga at Orimupiko Marae

He kōrero nā Angie Walters.

Earlier this month we embarked on our 2nd Taiohi wānanga lead by our Te Kāhui Taiohi o Taranaki Iwi steering roopu.

Again, whānau came from as far north as Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), as far south as Otautahi (Christchurch), and as far east as Wairoa to reconnect with whānau whānui, their whenua, learn about Taranaki whakapapa, tupuna, rangatira and hītori.

I'm sure everyone who attended went away with some great connections and learnings. We were delighted to have nine members of the Tuia Matariki Roopu join us to embraced Taranakitanga, and to share their experiences with us also.

Our 2nd wānanga was held at Orimupiko Marae (just South of Opunake) - the tone was set right from the start, from the pōwhiri and whakawhānaunga through to the poroporoaki which was held at the Opunake Headlands. The mild weather made our weekend very pleasant.

Karlos Drinkwater prepared a couple of 'ice-breakers' for us to get to know each other a little better which was fun and interactive. Our workshops - Mau Rākau, Toi Māori and Ko Wai Au - were described as "positive, fun, informative, connected, emotional" which showcased "the love we have for one another, the importance of working together and the need to research our Taranaki hītori".

On Sunday, we headed to Te Namu Pā where Tihikura Hōhaia gave a very in depth kōrero on the history pertaining to this area of significance. We finished the wānanga with a kai at Opunake Beach where we said our farewells, and ensured we'll meet again at the next wānanga in July.

Thank you to all our whānau that attended. Thank you to our steering roopu who facilitated the weekend, and to our special presenters whom of course are whānau, in running the workshops. Tihikura Hohaia, Haoro Hond, Hinenui Wano-Bryant and Te Haupai Korewha.

Thank you to Orimupiko Marae haukāinga, our own Robyn Davey, and Saphron and Dee Ngaia for keeping us nourished.

Lastly, a big mihi to our Te Kāhui o Taranaki Iwi operations team and Board of Trustees for your awhi, and support for making this happen.... and our main funder TSB Community Trust.

Kia ora mai tātou.

Below are some images from the wānanga. Check them out!

Pātaka Whata

Taranaki Iwi through its Fishing Company developed a pātaka for fish to be available to whānau/ngā uri o Taranaki Iwi for tangihanga.

The process for requesting pātaka when it is required is for pā/marae or whānau to provide details of the tangihanga to the Te Kāhui office where they can later collect the pātaka when it is ready.

For more information about our Pātaka Whata visit our website -

E te iwi! E te whānau!

We’re always encouraging ngā uri o Taranaki Iwi to check to make sure the contact details we have are correct or to register with Te Kāhui o Taranaki.
It's important that our records are up to date so that we can send essential information, like Trustee Election documents and voting papers, to our members.

So if you or a whānau member have moved house recently, or if there has been a mate (death) in the family our records may be out of date.

Please help us by spreading the word to whānau that may need to update their records with us.
Contact us in the office on 06 751 4285 or by email admin@taranaki.iwi.nz to update your details or to register.
