April  2018 Newsletter

April 2018

This coming month is going to be busy with an upcoming workparty, lodge seasons bookings to be applied for and ensuring that your subs are paid.  Not to mention giving some thought to getting fit, sorting out gear, watching some YouTube videos for tips and possibly reminiscing/dreaming about ski trips to Japan or the US.  We are lucky enough to see a couple of photos at the end of this newsletter showing what Japanese snow looks like.
We have a all the details below on how to make your application for Lodge bookings this season along with a reminder about the upcoming work party in a couple of weeks.
After the success of having club members standing in as Hut Officer over the last season we are going to continue the practice this coming season and to this end we are after expressions of interest from any (responsible) members who are not only interested but are available for a month or so.  All the details are below. (the committee can't be bribed)

LODGE SEASONS BOOKINGS 2018
Seasons booking open on the 1st May and close on 31st May. You will be advised of the bookings you have been allocated by the 14th June.
July School Holiday bookings open 24 May and close June 7. You will be advised by 14 June of bookings you have been allocated.
All members who know what accommodation they will be wanting for the winter season (school holidays excluded) please advise the Booking Officer (dates above and in the calendar on the right), please follow the procedure below:
Advise booking officer using the winter booking form.
•    Please note in the Comments Section “Seasons” and also any particular dates that are important to you or other information.
•    The booking officer will allocate bunks (Please note: – you may not get all the nights you have requested.) You will be wait-listed for any dates you missed out on.
•    6 bunks are kept free for casual bookings.
•    If these are not booked by Tues 10pm prior to the weekend the booking officer will advise those on the wait-list.
Payment for Seasons bookings – Once seasons bookings have been processed you will be advised which nights you have been allocated and payment instructions will be given.

HUT OFFICER 2018 - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
During the 2018 season we propose to have Taupo Ski Club members acting as HUT OFFICER.
We anticipate that there may be up to 3 - 4 Hut Officers from the start of June through until end of October.
The Hut officer will primarily be responsible for the midweek operation of the lodge. This includes potentially hosting nonmembers.
A full description of the role will be made available prior to the season.
If you are interested in acting as Hut Officer either during the winter season, or during the summer season on a casual basis please email giving your details, availability and any experience as soon as possible.
We hope to build a register of interested members so that we can respond to groups who may want to make use of the Lodge year round.

2017 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Annual General Meeting was held 24th March 2018 at Rotary House, Story Place in Taupo.  We will have a report of the meeting in the next newsletter but in the meantime the DRAFT minutes can be found here.  The biggest point to note of the proceedings are the financials with our fixed costs continually rising and as a result of this there will be an increase of $2 in night fees for this coming season (both adults and children)
All of the relevant meeting documentation is available here.

RAL PROPOSED GONDOLA
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts  (RAL) application to the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Ruapehu District Council  (RDC) for the new Gondola closed for public submissions late last month.  Ruapehu District Council has released the Applicant’s (RAL) Expert Evidence and this is now available on Ruapehu District Council’s website.   Evidence has been provided from:  Ross Copland – CEO, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, Ella Tennett – Senior Planner, Cheal Consultants and Kararaina Giuseppina Scott - Perception Planning   This makes good reading for those of you interested especially Ross Coplands reasoning for the Gondola.

WORK PARTY
The second of the 3 work parties planned for this year is coming up the weekend of 12/13 May and will be the final cleanup prior to the start of the season 3 weeks later!
Just make a booking through the website and/or give the Works Officer an email.

2018 SUBSCRIPTIONS
This year’s subscriptions were sent out to all members early April.  Don’t forget that payment by the end of April entitles you to a 5% discount.  To clarify an enquiry that we have had - the work party levy component of the subs will be refunded after completion of a work party.

SUMMER USAGE AND RATES
Just because the ski season has ended doesn't mean that you can't use the Lodge. The mountain is still a fantastic place in the summer so as members we have the opportunity to experience it.  Have you thought about a weekend in the Lodge, a family reunion, a bunch of workmates for a weekend?
During the summer period you can (as a member) hire the exclusive use of the Lodge for $255 a night or stay for a night for $11 (member) or $15 (non member with a member).  These prices are uncatered and you as  a member will be the Hut Officer (responsible for opening and closing).
Booking is still the same procedure as during the winter.

BUY / SELL / EXCHANGE
We are running this facility in the newsletters so if you want to be included just email the details to the newsletter editor.

GALLERY
For those of you interested in comparing the snow conditions over the last few years check out images in the Ski Club Gallery.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
We also need to bring to the attention of all members the impact of recent Health and Safety legislation.  It is up to all of us to be responsible and this is even more important in our Lodge with the risks of fire, storms and eruptions (amongst other things). To help facilitate this we are holding nightly club safety sessions (approx 5 mins) during the winter season.

PARTING SHOT
A couple this month:  First off, how about letting the committee know about any achievements from club members over the summer - these could be be kids in their first triathlon, BMX or MTB race or swim or even representing NZ.
Secondly for those members who didn't/wouldn't/couldn't ski overseas this summer here are a couple of parting images of Japanese snow kindly provided by the Moss family:
