OVERARCHING CONCEPT

Our Overarching Concept is COMMUNICATION.
WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE AND LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY, OPENLY AND HONESTLY, WITHOUT REGRET BUT ALSO WITHOUT HURTFULNESS.
This term we will be looking at how we communicate with each other, you as parents and of course with the children. We will be encouraging and teaching the children to communicate effectively and sharing with them the importance of communication with others. Being honest and respectful in your communication and also communicating in times of conflict to find suitable solutions.

EQ: Being a good friend
General: Dinosaurs
Language: Letter V violet, volcano, volvo, vacuum
Maths: Ordinal number and length

The children really enjoyed playing the various co-operative games and are definitely getting better at working together as a team during guided lessons. On Friday we discussed being selfish, bossy and bragging. I did this as they are negative characteristics that do not show that you are kind, caring and considerate. This week we are discussing how to be a good friend and will talk about what it means to be a good friend. We will make up a list of words that describe a good friend and a list that consists of characteristics that are not good. I will remind them of our stories and role playing of the negative traits. Since returning from the holidays I have noticed that the children are finding it difficult to share and take turns and there is constant arguing and fighting over toys and the creative equipment. When I speak about it the girls are quick to point out that it is the boys and they are unfortunately correct but I have been asking the children what they can do to resolve the problem. Teacher Rudo and I do assist them when problems and conflict arise but we are trying to teach them how to resolve conflict independently.  We also spoke about complaining as that is a constant battle as they love to tell tales on each other.  If the complaint is a petty thing I ask the children what they would like me to do about it. They then often realise that it is a silly thing and that it doesn't need addressing. One of the things they often tell me is someone pushed them when lining up but it is often a touch or an accidental bump. When I reverse the complaint back to them and ask how they think they can resolve the issue they quickly realise that there actually isn't a problem they are just complaining unnecessarily or "telling on!".
Our general theme is a great hit with the boys, Dinosaurs. Please send in books and anything you have about the subject. I like to link dinosaurs to measurement as they were huge. I take the children into the garden and we measure how long the various dinosaurs were and how much space they took up. The children love doing this and I bring different tape measures that vary in length to show them how long they were. They quickly realise that the 5 m tape is too short and the 15 m tape is better to use. A T-Rex tooth was the length of a ruler 30cm and his jaw was 1 m.
In maths we will continue with numbers, more, less and equal. We will be concentrating on 1st, 2nd, 3rd - 5th and position in space.
Last week the children enjoyed retelling and role playing the Wordworks story "Baby bird finds his mother" and on Friday they were given words to "read " and identify.   They immediately noticed the letter"c" was for the cow, "n" for nest and "m" for the mother. It is so good to see them "reading" and getting excited about recognising and matching letters and words. Make them aware of letters in the environment and especially when shopping. Shopping can be difficult with children so give them a letter eg C ask them to look for the letter on labels.

Friday 11 May is Mother's Day at our School. Moms please remember to ask for time off work to celebrate this special day with us. We understand that most of you cannot attend from 8 -11 am but ask you to try and come for about an hour so that each child has someone there for them. If you cannot attend an aunt or a grandmother can attend in your place. It is important for your child to have someone there during the morning.
Skills to practise at home Months of the year, days of the week, date of birth. Name writing, tying a shoe lace, identifying numbers and letters in the environment.
Please note school is closed on Fri 27 April, Mon 30 April and Tues 1 May.

Number Concepts:  Introduce number 7, Patterns/Sequencing using shapes, Size using shapes

We have been playing "Colour Dominoes" this week, along with "Pick up sticks" which the children have enjoyed.  Play games involving numbers and counting, especially games involving dice, where they need to count the dots.
Please note we have a lot of Public/School holidays over the coming two weeks.
Mother’s Day is coming up on Friday 11 May.  Please put in your half days leave, so you can come and spend the morning at school with your child.  This gives you an opportunity to see how they spend their days at school.  You can join us for morning ring, creative art, a special "Mother's Day" sing song and a special tea.  There will be a raffle during the Mother's Day week.
Please note that the mornings are getting colder and FHPPS is always in the shadow of the mountain until mid-morning.  Layers are always good so that the children can strip down as it warms up.  It can still be quite warm midday, often suitable for shorts.
