Breathing Room

Sometimes an image just needs to be super-sized. It demands a space large enough to steal the immediate attention in the room. For us colored pencil artists this can be quite a challenge because, Lord knows, we move a bit more slowly than artists of many other mediums.

I've wanted to draw this stream for several years now. This little "crik" flows just outside of Milledgeville IL where my dad and his brother used to go fishing. The wide open landscape is as uncluttered as their summers were. It's my kind of "pretty".

This view calms me, intrigues me, and invites me to walk along the edge. It reminds me of my own childhood visits to Weller's Woods where my brothers and I, along with our dog, would wade barefoot in the stream. It makes me feel small and timeless. Yes, it has to be big.

I'll stick with only the primary colors when I draw it, as a nod to the simplicity of the terrain. There will probably be snow flying when I finish it, but I don't care. To me it is important to create artwork that is not just lovely to look at, but touches our emotions in some way. This piece just wouldn't be the same if it sat nicely in an 8"x10" frame on my kitchen windowsill.
Nope. It needs some space in a prominent spot. I want to be able to greet it first thing when I walk into the room.

Jingle All The Way!

The Christmas Card Workshop is a favorite among Beech Tree Studio artists! There's something about drawing snowflakes with sparkles in the middle of June that adds an element of fun to the class! The images are then printed into Christmas cards as a small "gift" for your family and friends.
