Utah has announced the members of its search committee to select a successor to AD Hill. The 14-person group will be co-chaired by Chief Strategy Officer Ross and Assoc AD for Development Hendrix and includes representatives from athletics, academics, administration and the board of trustees. Prez Watkins: "Our new athletic director will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future direction and vitality of our university. I’m grateful to everyone on the committee for their time and willingness to participate in the search. Each member brings a unique perspective and I know each will bring valuable insight to the selection process." Talent management firm Ventura Partners will assist in the search. (link)
Regardless of whether Eastern Washington selects interim AD Hickey or Utah Valley AD Otoupal to serve as the next permanent AD, both candidates understand the importance fundraising will play in EWU's future. With a department $5.8M in the red, and a FB program that has won four of the last six Big Sky conference titles, Hickey noted this week that the department "in some ways has hit a ceiling," adding: "We've got to find a way to get the infrastructure and give [student-athletes] the things they need. ... The operating budget needs to go up by $4M to $5M." Meanwhile, Otoupal, who oversaw San Jose State's gift program that helped bring in record donations in 2006 and 2007, asserted that fundraising efforts at EWU must be bold. "We're going to do some crazy things. Half of them aren't going to work, but half of them are going to work." (link)
Eastern Washington Men's XC student-athletes have reacted to the school's parting of ways with HC Shane, who was let go "for convenience" and not due to allegations of misconduct, according to EWU. Allegations range from culturally insensitive comments to inappropriate insults hurled toward the driver of a different vehicle. In one instance, Shane is alleged to have responded to one student-athlete of Hispanic heritage by asking: "Do we build the wall? ... Do we report [the student-athlete]?" The student-athlete indicated he knew it was a joke, but said it crossed a line. Still, the student-athlete indicates he and Shane have since spoken and ironed out their differences; however, other student-athletes took exception to Shane's being retained following comments in which he referred to two student-athletes as a "cancer." According to one runner, it "felt like it was a big issue to still have him coaching while he was under investigation [for the comments]. I don't feel like there's been any accountability." (link)
During remarks made while accepting the Robert R. Neyland Award on Saturday, former SEC Commish Kramer expressed worry over the future of NCAA FB and the growing concern regarding FB-related injuries. "I'm concerned that it survives on college campuses where their games will never be on television and will be played in front of less than 10,000 fans. I'm even more concerned about games on Friday night. This nation wasn't built on softness or avoiding risks. It was built on dreams." He also said FB teaches "the lessons of toughness, teamwork, and striving for success...[better] than in any classroom." (link)
Kansas Chancellor Girod this week confirmed that KU did not produce a written report of an internal review conducted last year in MBB, saying that the university looked at several records during the examination but did not discover anything of concern. "From our perspective. I can't control the world. All I can do is try to understand our team, our practices and our behaviors." Girod also confirmed that the examination did not produce any evidence related to Adidas' alleged paying of players, saying that all KU could do was to "make sure that on our side of the house we are doing everything appropriately and properly." Asked what KU would do to ensure such transactions don't happen in the future, Girod responded: "If what is alleged is true, then somebody was plainly misrepresenting. There is not a way for us to protect ourselves against that." (link)
Kansas State will end its receipt of funding from the student privilege fund in the 2018-19 year, making it just the third school in the Big 12 (along with Oklahoma and Texas) to receive no institutional support or student fees. The self-reliance is part of a plan put into motion in 2010, but a drop in enrollment has led KSU to end its receipt of student fee allocation a year early. AD Taylor: "It's certainly something we take pride in. It also puts pressure on us so we can continually push our revenue side from every angle we can to be able to maintain that." Taylor also acknowledges that the margin for error is slim, considering KSU has the smallest budget of all Big 12 schools. "Revenue is so critically important, we just need to continue to do everything we can to be successful, fill our stands in football, men's and women's basketball and then hopefully the Big 12 revenue continues to go up." (link)
Listen: New Charlotte AD Hill chats with 1.Question's Brown, covers ground on his MBB HC search process, one he undertook without the assistance of a search firm. Hill notes the importance of understanding expectations from the moment a new leader walks in the door, also reviews the challenges of priority management. More. (link)
During day 1 of former USC FB AC McNair's defamation trial against the NCAA, McNair attorney Broillet asserted that the NCAA "botched" its investigation of McNair, adding: "Football is a game. Football coaches' reputations are not." Broillet also cited NCAA Prez Emmert's deposition in which Emmert reportedly said Committee on Infractions liaison Cooper "did what he wasn't supposed to do" by assuming an active role in the USC infractions case. Broillet: "They rewrote the evidence to fit what they wanted to do, which was hammer USC." (link)
iMackulate Vision Gaming (IMV) has announced it will launch a college football video game in 2020 called "Gridiron Champions," which will enable gamers to create a uniquely customized experience, from player uniforms to stadium experience. IMV CEO Lewis: "There is no college football game on the market that offers a creative experience like Gridiron Champions and we’re excited to be the first to hit the marketplace in 2020." The game will retail for $59.99 and be available for Xbox, PlayStation and Steam. (link)
Latest SBJ: Last week's World Congress of Sports in L.A. was marked by constant talk of disruption with applications up & down the industry. YouTube Head of TV & Originals Marketing Courtin: "It's an explosive time." Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Rubin: "If we look five to 10 years down the road, I think the digital companies will be the primary distributors for most sports content. A lot of people don’t agree with that, but I think their ability to deal directly with the fan and better customize experiences for the fan, and do it through such great digital companies, is a massive opportunity. It’s one of the reasons why I’m still bullish on the costs of these franchises." (link); UCF leader Lapchick looks at diversity in Major League Baseball on race & gender fronts. Is the G League a serious competitor for prospective MBB student-athlete talent? The Athletic's Davis takes a close look as Syracuse HC Boeheim says the decision for Orange signee Bazely to bypass SU for the G League is "the most shocking decision I've seen in 42 years of coaching." NBPA Executive Director Roberts: "I don’t see in my lifetime it ever being a viable alternative to college that’s going to rule the day. No aspiring young basketball player says, 'When I grow up, I want to play for the G League.'" Davis: "G League advocates point out that more than half of the players on NBA rosters at the end of this season had G League experience. While true, that doesn’t mean the G League was the biggest reason the players got there." More. (link, link)
Northeastern AD Konya promotes Executive Senior Assoc. AD Sullivan to Deputy AD for Internal Affairs/SWA. She currently oversees a handful of sports, the business office, HR, compliance, enrollment management and student-athlete support services. Konya: "Regina has proven time and again throughout her career that she is an incredibly valuable asset to the success of a collegiate athletics organization. She has been especially helpful and supportive during the transition to the new leadership in our department, and I will continue to rely on her expertise as the Howlin' Huskies continue to move forward with the new and innovative vision for our organization." Sullivan: "I am thrilled to step into this elevated role with Jeff's leadership team and eager to continue establishing the new vision and strategy on behalf of our talented and wonderful student-athletes, coaches and staff." Iowa Asst. Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator opens up to Football Scoop on the challenges of modern-day recruiting. "Kids have no idea what an offer means. They have no idea what an offer means. I showed those guys an NLI – a National Letter of Intent – and asked those kids, 'Have you ever seen this before?' This never gets tweeted out, because when this is in front of you, that’s when it’s real. All the offers and things of that nature, the really nice graphics you’ll get on August 1st when we’re able to make official offers, doesn’t mean anything until you get an official letter of intent in front of you. You only get one. You can have a dozen offers, but you’ll only get one National Letter of Intent and you sign with one school." On the frequency of prospects tweeting "blessed to receive and offer from..." Bell responds: "If a kid visits here and he has a genuine interest, I have no problem extending an offer. But if a kid just wants to be recruited, nah, I’m not going to appease you. I don’t want you tweet out what you’re 'blessed to receive,' if you have no intention of coming here. You have no idea of what I’m trying to offer you if that’s your motive." (link)
With HC changes in FB and MBB in the past year, Ole Miss AD Bjork notes the different feel surrounding the programs. Bjork: "When people were visiting during spring practice, we had different media members around that hadn't been back in a while. They walked around and they said, 'You know? It feels like normal.' We feel like we're back to doing the things we should be doing — teaching, educating, coaching, recruiting and building facilities. We're getting the program back in the re-established position of strength. It feels like the cloud is gone. We can move forward. Even though there are a few things left to go, for the most part we're moving forward in a big, big way." Both FB HC Luke and MBB HC Davis value the importance of locking down in-state prospects. (link)
Samford AD Newton strikes a partnership with local marketing firm Knight Eady to assist with the external messaging for his department, but also assist in the hire of a new Assoc. AD for Marketing & Strategic Communications. Knight Eady's namesake leader, "A lot of people look at college athletics, and there’s a lot of things for families to do on a Saturday in the fall or throughout the winter (for basketball), and what we want to do is position Samford to market to families. We are not looking to take and Alabama, Auburn, or UAB fans and convert them – you can be a fan of both. It’s a great place to take your family." (link)

UIC AD Klassy on the challenge of putting butts in seats for home MBB contests, "We’re competing against movie theaters, we’re competing against opera, we’re competing against anything that is disposable income of entertainment for the family. [...] For us, we have them in our backyard. We just haven’t done a very good job of engaging them and getting them back." Fellow Flames leaders point to Northern Kentucky as an example of how to leverage local ties & a winning program. More Klassy: "The guys are doing what they need to do right now: They’re winning basketball games. It’s up to us in the administration to take advantage of that success." (link)
Facility Notes: Populous sent its latest renderings of the Chippewa Champions Center at Kelly/Shorts Stadium to Central Michigan AD Alford last week and the Chips boss is "eager" to see the project move forward. Alford: "Everybody I talk to loves to hear the One CMU vision. They love that we're doing something with that part of the stadium that will serve the entire university. They want to hear about the amenities and the impact the facility will have for the entire university. This building can house events that will help recruit students," Alford said. "For university relations, alumni relations, it will help deliver their messages. Athletics is just one of the many departments that will benefit from this project. It's a CMU building." Football HC Bonamego says it "can't be understated the impact this facility will have for all of our student-athletes." Fundraising is ongoing. (link); The $87M renovation to Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena is on schedule to be completed in time for MBB's home-opener against Ohio State on Nov. 7. UC is dropping capacity from 13,176 to 12,012 but adding 524 club seats, concessions areas in the club level, 14 loge boxes, an expanded lower-level concourse and new upper level concourse. All but one of the 16 luxury suites are sold out and AD Bohn is "ecstatic." Check out these photos of the progress. (link); Virginia State Sen. Wagner on Old Dominion's upgrade to Foreman Field: “We’ve been hurting so long. Let’s step forward with a real Division I football stadium. And let’s have some bathrooms. ... Old Dominion games are more than just football games. They provide a gathering place where business and political leaders converge. They enhance the quality of life. I’m tired of seeing 757 area athletes leave the area. This stadium might help persuade more of them to play right here.” (link)
After getting their first look at the new building that is part of a $8M renovation of the UNT Coliseum, North Texas officials have decided to reconfigure the facility that will house the school's basketball offices and a ticket booth. The changes are expected to cost the university less than $25K. MBB HC McCasland on the importance of offices to a coaching staff: “Any time you are recruiting or hosting people you want to be a part of your family, you want them to be at home. You want to have something that you are proud of, fits with the campus and gives you a chance to make a good first impression.” (link)
UT-Rio Grande Valley’s 22-member college football feasibility committee, which is being chaired by former Texas FB HC Brown, could release its feasibility study as early as next week. To help with the process, College Sports Solutions was hired for a fee of $100K and tasked with “taking into account support within the community, potential infrastructure and funding models, and NCAA requirements for football programs at both the FCS and FBS levels.” (link)
With the U.S. Supreme Court expected to rule on the future of the PASPA between now and the end of June, SportTechie’s Booton explores why the NCAA needs a “robust sports betting framework.” The American Gaming Association estimated $10B was going to be gambled on games during March Madness this year, but just $300M (3%) was expected to be wagered legally in Nevada. Despite its concerns about protecting student-athletes and the integrity of the games, Booton writes that “having a technological framework in place to identify inconsistencies would help the organization avoid any 1919 World Series-esque corruption scandals.” (link)

Make sure you've had your coffee for this Wall Street Journal piece: "Change Your Personality Later in Life? Yes, It Is Possible." A trio of experts share their research results and professional opinions. Psychiatric Specialist Vorgan: "There are five major groups [traits/parts of our personalities that can be changed]: extraversion, openness, emotional stability, agreeableness and conscientiousness. Our individuality is determined by where we fall on the spectrum within each of these personality categories." Geriatric psychiatrist Agronin: "As we age, we hit transition points—I call them 'age points'—in which our previous abilities might seem to fail: retirement, grandparenthood, major illness, widowhood and others. When the time comes to reckon with gaps in our abilities, we can find ways to accept them and try to change, or we can retreat into more rigid, vulnerable and often isolated circumstances."
