The Knight Commission hosts a number of key voices to discuss the need for change in follow-up to the Rice Commission's recommendations. Here's the full release from the Knight Commission with a thorough look at how the industry should adjust & improve. (link). USA Today's Berkowitz, along with a number of others, were on hand in Washington D.C. Berkowitz's Twitter feed (link) provides a number of nuggets from those involved:
+ NCAA's Remy reiterates that in wake of Rice Commission, member schools will enact "bold legislation" that will "profoundly alter the college basketball landscape"
+ NCAA's Remy emphasizes that NCAA's plan for legislative changes from Rice Commission is on a track much faster than usual rules-making process
+ NCAA's Remy on membership vote to end mandatory outside-income reporting by coaches: "It's time to re-evaluate that change."
+ NCAA's Remy: "There is confusion between name, image and likeness and pay for play." Says pay for play is provision of "compensation for athletic services" NIL "is something totally different and we've dealt with it differently."
+ St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli during @KnightAthletics meeting: "We're not here to rebuild college basketball. We're here to create a new model."
+ St. Joseph's basketball coach Phil Martelli on coaches' worries about roster management with allowing players to explore pro options w/o losing eligibility: "Forget about it. Everybody will figure it out."
+ Jay Bilas says he views Rice Commission as taking the position: "Money in the game is fine as long as players don't get the money. [...] No more amateurism, no more federal crimes."
+ Kylia Carter, mother of Duke player Wendell Carter on the college sports system: Only system where laborers not compensated while others are compensated other than college sports: "Slavery and the prison system." [...] The talent is being purchased, but the talent is not receiving any benefit."
+ David Robinson, member of Knight Commission also on Rice Commission: "Certainly kids should be able to benefit from their name, image and likeness." But says Rice group decided not to make recommendation on this issue because of pending legal cases.
+ Former Secretary of Education Duncan believes the NCAA needs to stop "being a membership association with all of the inherent conflicts of interest … and self-dealing that makes it hard for it to show the courage it needs"
A new superseding indictment is coming for former Auburn MBB AC Person & clothier Michel in the next 30 days in the latest movement around the MBB-FBI situation. Dentons law firm partner Hill: "It’s a fair assumption that the government is likely to add facts and/or new allegations that are either responsive to defendants’ effort to dismiss the case and/or newly discovered allegations or both." (link)
Latest SBJ: Headliner Smith reviews how the Notre Dame-JMI/Legends deal could serve as evidence of serious competition in the marketplace, paving the way for the Learfield-IMG College marriage to get approved by the Department of Justice. Fighting Irish AD Swarbrick on his new pact, "For us, an individualized approach was paramount. Given our approach to commercialism — no signage, no video advertising — you just can’t bundle us. It doesn’t work. That’s a case where [a smaller firm] probably works better." A Smith source, "This is not about the companies. They take that chance when they go into business. This is about what’s best for the schools and the sponsors." There's also a rundown of which MMR firms have relationships throughout the 'Power 5,' only one school, Stanford, is still handling everything in house. (link); Legends Prez of Global Sales Ondrejko: "We haven’t looked at the space like, 'We’re going to go after multimedia rights deals.' This is a very unique brand and we want to deliver in the highest way for Notre Dame. And if we do that, the rest will sort itself out appropriately. [...] If you look at our history, we’ve never been ones to go after volume on any of this. We’ve been more deliberate in what we’ve gone after and how we’ve gone after it. It’s a handful of the right properties and the right level of relationships versus trying to pick up the masses. (link)
Ball State Prez Mearns outlines what he's looking for in a new AD as the process to identify a new boss in Muncie proceeds. Mearns' starting point, "We want an athletic director who will help us build a program to where college athletics is going to be in 10 years. If you think of the competitive changes or the threats to college athletics – whether that be the antitrust lawsuits, whether it’s the most recent scandals that NCAA basketball is facing – if people think athletics is just the status quo or incremental change is all that is going to happen in the next 10 years, I think they are mistaken. I don’t know what that is, but I want an athletic director who has the vision and the courage to lead us to that point." Also of note, "I want to hear from someone who says, 'Given the resources I have, how can I deploy those resources to have a greater impact and improve the performance of our student athletes on the field and in the classroom?' That should be really attractive, right? It’s like participating in a sporting event where everyone is essentially showing up with the same talent level, where the hardest worker and the most courageous athlete is going to win." (link)
The process to replace outgoing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi AD Lazenby gets reviewed by KRISTV. Interim AD & MBB HC Wilson: "My hope is we can help President Quintanilla realize her goals & her vision for the university. Those are: 1) To make it a vibrant campus; 2) To make Corpus Christi a vibrant college town; and, 3) For us to become a breakthrough mid-major athletic program." Wilson's answer to potentially hanging up his whistle for the full-time AD gig, "We'll see." (link)
UAB AD Ingram gets an extension that could keep him atop the Blazers department through April of 2023. Prez Watts: "I am excited to extend Mark Ingram's contract and look forward to continued success and growing momentum in UAB Athletics. Since joining UAB in May 2015, Mark has provided outstanding leadership to UAB Athletics during the most transformational 3-year period in the department's history." MBB HC Ehsan gets a one-year extension to April 1 of 2022 & WBB boss Norton gets two more for an agreement that now runs the same length as Ingram's. (link)

Standout Oregon State Baseball student-athlete Heimlich is back in the headlines as he now says, "Nothing ever happened" in connection to his felony conviction for sexually molesting his 6-year-old niece when he was 15. As you likely recall, fallout from the incident last season led to Heimlich stepping away from the Beavers. This year Heimlich sports an 11-1 mark for the 35-7-1 OSU squad. More Heimlich: "I always denied anything ever happened. Even after I pled guilty, which was a decision me and my parents thought was the best option to move forward as a family. And after that, even when I was going through counseling and treatment, I maintained my innocence the whole time." NYT's Streeter with more. (link)
Colorado AD George indicates he's looking for a 10- to 15-year naming rights deal for the Coors Events Center, "At the end of the day, we want to make sure there is a fit there in our values and our relationships." More George: "We’re certainly talking to a lot of different people about a relationship and we’ll continue to have those discussions. When you’re doing naming-rights deals, those are typically conversations and discussions that you’re having over many months and it does take some time." (link)

Former Maine MBB HC Walsh digs in with Oklahoma MBB HC Kruger in the latest installment of the Dynamic Leadership Podcast from AthleticDirectorU. Kruger covers a handful of key issues around the sport, including changes he would make, "As a coach, making adjustments is healthy. As players evolve and society changes, you have to make adjustments to stay relevant and to stay interesting to those you are leading. […] Regarding the one and done deal, anytime you dictate a path for young people, it can be concerning." More from the only HC to ever lead five different programs to NCAA Tourney victories. (link)

How much money can you make? How big a house can you get? Then you get to a point where you've had all that stuff, so you think differently. Am I saying I'd never go? No, I'm not saying that, but it would have to be a really special situation where I would look at things differently now. Who's the president? Who's the AD? How are they going to support us? So you're making sure it's the right place you can really win at, because as you get older, you realize how important it is. That's why I took this job. This president is 100 percent about football and doing what it takes to win. Gave us the highest assistant coach pool in the conference. That's a big deal. When you're younger, you don't even ask that." (link); Montana names North Dakota AHC Citowicki as the next Soccer HC for the Grizzlies. Former Missouri student-athlete & Boston Celtic Dooling is the first Wellness Counselor, "For so long, we weren’t ready to speak about some of the challenges in our lives. For [players in 2018] to speak about it in plain and normal terms, it just really makes it very relatable for what everyone in society is going through at different times in their lives." The Celtics are one of many teams who use a clinical sports psychologist. HC Stevens: "We don’t want to try to look like we’ve got this all figured out or that we’re some trailblazer, trendsetter. While the new tax package may (or may not) end up impacting the donor behavior of supporters around the nation, it's already providing a verifiable boost to corporate earnings as, "More than half of the total profit growth in the first quarter stemmed from a decline in tax rates," per the Wall Street Journal's Francis & Rubin. Key to know: "The tax savings are helping to drive profits to new highs among companies in the S&P 500 index. Overall, first-quarter after-tax earnings for index companies were on track through Wednesday to rise 25.3% over the 2017 period, according to Thomson Reuters. That would mark the seventh straight quarter of per-share profit growth and the strongest gains in more than seven years." (link)
