Message from the PTA

Hello North Davis Families,
Please mark you calendars! There are so many fun activities crammed into the last few weeks of the school year. Students will be showing off the singing skills they have been working on with Ms Mindy. Check below for specific grade level times. Jump Rope Club kids will be holding their bouncy assembly on May 30th at 11am. This Friday May 18th, the 5th and 6th grade Robotics Club will be competing at the Davis-wide robotics competition at Davis High School, 4-7:30pm. There are even still some grade level field trips coming up (please remember to contribute, if possible, $25 per child to the school field trip fund if you haven't already.) This is all just a sampling of the student activities unfolding in May!

One activity I'd like to highlight is the final PTA meeting TOMORROW May 15th at 7:15pm in the MPR directly after the 1st grade Music Performance. I hope to see lots of folks there to end this year strong (especially those 1st grade parents who will already be there, hint, hint...).

NDE is adopting a new Positive Behavior Interventions Support (PBIS) program across ALL grade levels next year. This is a pretty big change that will impact the school in many great ways. If you are interested in learning more, please come to the meeting. We will be having a presentation from a teacher and a parent involved in the program's planning and roll-out.  Parent awareness and feedback is essential to this new program's success, so please do take this opportunity to learn more!

We will also work to pre-approve next year's budget as well as vote in the 2018-2019 Executive Board.

The proposed board for next year is:
•President  - Brenna Hughes
•VP (Fundraising) – Kelly Kohen
•VP (Communications) – Sophie Javers
•Treasurer – Camille Stephenson
•Secretary – Jennifer Roach
•Historian – Kristen Gong
•Auditor – Renee Hoch
•Parliamentarian – Bobbi Avery

As always, reach out to me at sophiejavers(at)gmail.com if you have any comments, ideas, concerns. My (email) door is always open.
Have a wonderful week!
Sophie Javers, PTA President, mom to boys  - Cullen (5th grade) and Cormac (1st grade)

FOCUS ON FITNESS

We are wrapping up our Kids in Motion Program for the year.

The final Kindergarten and T/K session will be on Wednesday, May 16.
The final primary session will be on Friday, May 25.
The T/K students will end the year working on balance, coordination, eye-hand coordination through ball handling skills, and eye-foot/body coordination via jumping into a long jump rope.
The Kindergarten students will end the year learning the rules of and practicing skills on a new play structure on the playground, playing a game called Eskimo Kickball that incorporates running and team work, and finally playing a new tag game called Everybody’s It Tag.

Grades 1-3 will end the year with a variety of fun activities:
Anya, a second grader in Mrs. Tessier’s classroom was PE Teacher for the Day on Friday, May 11th. She selected the following activities for her second grade session: BOSU, Capture the Flag, Hot Lava Monster, Tail Tag, Switch and Up and Over.

Beckett, a third grader in Mrs. Lovitt’s classroom was PE Teacher for the Day on Friday, May 11th. He selected the following activities for his third grade session: Sharks and Minnows, BOSU, Dodgeball, Freeze Tag, and a new to NDE activity – Quidditch (think Harry Potter)!!
Students have also been working on soccer ball handling skills, a variety of tag games, scooter board relays with two students on each scooter board, parachute activities, and overhand throwing skills.

Our intermediate students (grades 4-6) will finish the year working on: Volleyball, Track and Field, and Soccer. These three spring units have been the focus of the last three months.
Our 5th grade students will complete the CA State Fitness Testing during May. This is something that they were trained on in the fall and have been working on all year.

Due to a scheduling conflict our Jump Rope ASSEMBLY is now scheduled for 11:00-11:30 on Wednesday, May 30th.
Any questions, please contact kristenmuir@sbcglobal.net

Nurse's Nook

May is bike month! The weather is getting nicer and I’m happy to see more students biking to school. Please talk to students about the importance of always wearing a helmet when they bike. Resources are available to provide helmets for families who need assistance. Contact me for information at bavery@djusd.net.

Medication at school  Any medication your student requires at school (prescription or over the counter) must have an accompanying district medication authorization. Medication forms for the 2018-19 school year can be picked up in your school office or downloaded from the DJUSD
Health Services website. If your student currently has medication in the school office, please remember to pick it up on the last day of school.

May Is Bike Month! Please mark your calendars, sign up to help, and turn in your child's permission slip to participate in our fun events...

We at NDE celebrate our strong cycling culture by biking to school as often as possible in May.  We give out prizes to the kids who scan in with our Active4Me program, and run several amazingly fun school-wide biking activities after school on Wednesdays in May.  Check out the details below!

We need volunteers to help make these fun events happen.  Please sign up to help at
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040d44afad23aa8-mayisbike1
Your child will need to turn in a completed permission slip to participate in the after school activities.  Please fill one out and turn it in to the envelope hanging in the office before May 9. Download the form here, on the PTA website
ndepta.com, or pick one up in the office: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzGN5JLDOqBSRDRRT2Y4bkstSDQ

Mark your calendars! This year's fun cycling events include:
  1. Wed. May 23rd: Most Decorated Bike Contest Students can enter the Most Decorated Bike Contest after school.  They are encouraged to decorate their bikes at home the day before.  A few decorations will be available for use before school that morning. Mrs. Roseen will be our judge!
  2. Wed May 30th: Teacher Bike Race and Popsicle Sale  A beloved tradition at NDE!  A teacher from each grade will participate in the highly competitive Teacher Bike Race.  Students are encouraged to stay after school to cheer on their favorite teacher!  The PTA will hold a popsicle sale before the bike race. Popsicles are $1.  The money raised from the popsicle sale will go into our Active4Me Scanning fund.
  3. Sign up your children to participate in our Active4Me Scanning program!  Once signed up, they can scan in at the lunch tables each morning that they walk or bike to school. When they scan, you will receive a text or email alerting you that they arrived to school safely, and they will receive many fun incentives for staying active and participating.  This program not only incentivizes fitness and doing our part to be green, it decreases traffic around our school!  In the month of May, every scan really counts.  The class in each grade that scans the most times throughout the month will receive an ice-cream party!  So, the more people scanning in each class, the better the chances of winning. Extra incentive: raffle tickets will be awarded to every student who scans on each Wed morning in May.  There will be some really cool cycling-related prizes available! Visit the lunch tables in the mornings to enroll, grab a permission slip in the office, or sign up here: https://northdavis.active4.me

If you have any questions about the May Is Bike Month Activities or the Active4Me scanning program, please contact Michelle Livingston at mchellelivingston@gmail.com, or visit her at the lunch tables on Thursday mornings before school.  Happy Cycling!!

As the year comes to an end, please take a few minutes to give your feedback on PTA activities and program support.

Let your voice be heard!

The PTA is asking for your feedback and ideas on all of our PTA activities, as well as how we can expand/diversify fundraising efforts to continue our programming at North Davis Elementary. It is essential to constantly reassess the priorities and needs of our NDE community and this survey is an important way for the PTA to collect your thoughts!

Please do take a moment to respond to this survey. It will take 5 minutes or less of your time, but your input will be lasting, as it helps guide the PTA in planning and programing for the rest of this year and the next.

Click here to access the survey and share your ideas.

If you haven't yet, there's still time to sign up for our Active4Me Scanning Program!
Please consider signing up your children for our Active4Me bike scanning program.  Each time your children walk or bike to school, they will be scanned in by our friendly volunteers.  You may have seen them scanning kids in at the lunch tables in the morning!  The scan will send a text message or email to you,
to let you know that your children arrived to school safely, and will tally how many times they've walked or biked, plus the cumulative miles they've logged for the school year.  Incentives and prizes are given out throughout the year to encourage the kids to keep scanning.

Do you live too far away for your children to bike to school?  With the earlier start time at Davis High School, traffic is pretty heavy on 14th St.  Please consider dropping your children off on F St, at the end of 14th, or at the Davis Arts Center, and having them walk to school from there.  This still qualifies for bike scanning!

Stop by the lunch tables in the morning between 8-8:30, or in the office to pick up an Active4Me permission slip.  You can also download the form on the North Davis Elementary School website and drop it off in the office once you've completed it.  Find more information here: https://northdavis.active4.me
