NYIT Library Mourns the Loss of Jennifer Charmaine Thompson

It is with deep and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and co-worker Jennifer Charmaine Thompson. A beloved librarian at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) for many years, Jennifer was a nice person and a wonderful and dedicated librarian. From Charmaine’s family at NYIT,

“We have lost a kind soul. Charmaine, as she wanted to be called, was a friend who I will remember with good thoughts and feelings… She was truly a woman of wisdom and showed kindness and understanding to all.”
"Jennifer was a sensitive, caring and devoted individual… I admired and respected her greatly. I will hold onto my memories. She definitely enriched my life."

Charmaine worked for many years as a librarian at Wisser Memorial Library in Old Westbury, New York, until her early retirement caused by disability from her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis. At NYIT, she was known as a stickler for detail, her dedication to assisting the research efforts of faculty and students, and her work with the Academic Senate. She previously worked for the Queens, NY, Library System, and for libraries at Albany, NY, State University, the University of Michigan, New York University, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Charmaine, born in St. Kitts, West Indies, moved with her family to Brooklyn, NY, when she was 10 years old. She was a passionate lover of literature and music, and was a member of the Resurrection-Ascension Church and Queens College choirs. During the last decade of her life, she developed an interest in Reiki and alternative medicine, a field she pursued while living in Tucson, Arizona, and in Florida. She was a proud member of Unity of Daytona Beach church, and of the Scrabble club in Palm Coast. She was a graduate of Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and St. John's University in Queens, and she earned graduate degrees in English from the University of Dayton and in library science from Queens College.

Charmaine is survived by her children, Audrey Feuerherd Rojas, of Astoria, Queens, and Pierce Feuerherd, of Portland, Oregon. Her survivors also include her mother, Audrey Thompson of Palm Coast, a brother, Russell Thompson, of Columbus, Ohio, son-in-law Marco Rojas of Astoria and daughter-in-law Ali Foster Feuerherd of Portland, and a grandson, Miles Feuerherd of Portland. She is predeceased by her father, Arthur Thompson. Charmaine is also survived by her former husband, Peter Feuerherd of Rego Park, NY.

Donations may be made in Charmaine’s name to Doctors Without Borders or Charity Water.

“Do not say that I'll depart tomorrow
because even today I still arrive.

Look deeply: I arrive in every second
to be a bud on a spring branch,
to be a tiny bird, with wings still fragile,
learning to sing in my new nest,
to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower,
to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.”

–– Thich Nhat Hanh

Rest in Peace Charmaine. We will remember you always.
