58th Commencement (May 2017)

Greetings from the Director

Another successful year. Another graduating class!

This month, the Library presents the end of semester De-Stress Yourself event. It will be held inside the Library in room 221 and outside on the lawn. See more details inside this issue.

While you're here to de-stress, please enjoy the Jewish American, Asian Pacific Islander and Photography month displays. Finally, to help yourself or your students reach the finish line successfully, please take a look at the Tutoring Center. Full details on that resource are available in this issue.

Enjoy!

Blast from the Past:
Archive Collection

57th Commencement (May 2016)
Did you know that former President Barack Obama visited the Largo campus? His first appearance was as a Senator running for the White House. He also visited the campus twice while in office.

Enjoy these photos from The Digital Archive Collection, which is currently under construction, housed and managed by the Library.

Once it’s up and running, use the Archives to:
  • Conduct research for assignment, papers, and projects
  • Learn more about the history of the college.
  • Learn more about individuals associated with the college
The best part about the Digital Archive Collection is that you can participate!

Checking In: LLR Staff

If you’ve ever wondered about all the great programs at the Library, then there’s no better person to ask than our very own Outreach Librarian Julie Seigel, who is our featured LLR employee for this month.

Bookends: Tell us a little about yourself.

JS: I’ve been at the college for seven years. I started as an adjunct and now work full-time as the Outreach Librarian. I have a background in bookmaking and typography. I enjoy reading and travel. I’m responsible for events and am excited about the Destress event this Wednesday.

B: When did you know you wanted to work in a library?

JS: It was a gradual process. I’ve always enjoyed collecting. I have a collection of pulp fiction, artists’ books,  and zines. I used to focus on books as art since I enjoy bookmaking. Some of my friends recommended that I look into library school and when I did, I instantly loved it.

B: What is your favorite part of working in a library?

JS: I love pairing people with information. I also love learning from patrons. Each day, you learn something from someone—whether it’s a new book or topic—that you wouldn’t necessarily normally connect with. I love connecting with people—students or faculty. I love the freedom to creative and try new and different things.

B: What are you currently reading?

JS: Six different books. I just finished Station 11 [Emily St. John Mandel], which I highly recommend. But now I’m reading Call Me By Your Name [André Aciman], Swing Time [Zadie Smith], The Wicked and the Divine [Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie], which is a graphic novel, Red Clocks [Leni Zumas], I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, and Meaty, a collection of essays by Samantha Irby.

B: What’s your favorite book of all-time?

JS: Oh, I don’t have one! That’s an impossible question to answer.

The More You Know:
All About Learning Resources

The Tutoring Center, currently located in Bladen Hall 107, offers one-on-one tutoring (or group tutoring if requested) in a variety of subjects, including Chemistry, Biology, Math, Physics, Spanish, and Accounting. Students may receive two hours of tutoring per subject per week.

To ensure an effective tutoring session, students should come prepared with their student ID, textbooks, notes, and a list of specific questions they have for the tutor. Because sessions are only an hour long, it is important for them to be as organized as possible.

While we can’t work with students directly on homework, take home exams or other graded assignments, we can facilitate the learning process by working with them on similar problems. We encourage students to try working on their assignments first so they can pinpoint exactly where they need help.
Hours:

Monday-Thursday: 8:30 am to 8:30 pm
Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Saturday: 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
Intersession Hours (May 15 - June 1)
Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Weekends - Closed

Students may make appointments either by calling the center directly (301-546-0748) or by visiting the center itself. Because appointments book up quickly, we encourage students to seek help as soon as they can.

The Tutoring Center is where the pieces
of the puzzle fall into place.
