Trail News & Information

Spence Mountain Update

Two new trails just opened at Spence Mountain, Old Eagle and Shoalwater.  Both trails are rated green (or easy) and provide amazing views of Shoalwater Bay, Mt. McLoughlin and Upper Klamath Lake.

Old Eagle follows the shoreline of Shoalwater Bay for 1.6 miles.  You can take it as an out and back or continue across Eagle Ridge Road to Shoalwater Trail which loops back to the trailhead over its three mile length.  The total loop distance is 4.6 miles.  If you are riding a bike it's great both directions but if you go counter-clockwise (take Shoalwater trail first) the climb is gentler.  Both trails start at the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead.  Please consult our updated Spence map for details.
If you look closely you’ll find Porta-a-Potties at both trailheads tucked back into the trees.  Please respect others and keep them clean.

Note, there will be rolling trail closures at Spence on June 2nd when the Spence Mountain Run takes place.  Please check our website and facebook for more information as the date nears.

Other News:
Spence Work and Ride

This month's maintenance day will include the opportunity to ride the trails as well as work on them. Work on trails in the morning, then in the afternoon, those interested can ride the new five-mile Shoalwater and Old Eagle trail loop.

The plan is to help Dirt Mechanics groom the recently built Modoc Trail in the morning. Work involves raking out the machine built tread and cutting any roots sticking up. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, work gloves a hat and bring water and a mid-morning snack. Please RSVP to the Meetup page so organizers know how many tools to bring.

Meet at the Shoalwaeter Bay Trailhead, located two miles down Eagle Ridge Road, at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 12.
A Tale of two Pauls

This month we're profiling two Pauls who have made the Spence Mountain trail system possible: Paul Thomasberg of Terra Velo Consulting and Paul "Kiwi" Lissette of Dirt Mechanics.  Paul Thomasberg completed the Spence Mountain Master Plan, desiging the 53 miles of trail in five phases, as well as on the ground trail layout and trail construction.  Paul Lissette oversees a crew of 3-5 folks and has been on the ground building trail at Spence since 2014.

Paul Thomasberg has a unique approach to trail design because he mountain bikes himself. He is a founding member of the Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA), a trail steward and volunteer for 25 years, former vice chair of the organization and crew leader instructor for 15 years. He designed trails in Bend and Central Oregon, including the 265-mile Ochoco multi-use trail plan.  Paul is also an avid mountain biker.

Paul Lissette grew up in New Zealand and moved to Portland in 1993, then to Bend in 2001. He started Dirt Mechanics in 2013. He has built trails at Mount Bachelor, the O'Leary Trail System in McKenzie Bridge, Lawler Trail in Oakridge and the Deschutes River Trail at the south end of Tumalo State Park.

A big thanks to both the Pauls for all their hard work at Spence Mountain.
