Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
4 May, 2018

This week the PTO has been amazing in showing appreciation to the teachers at Dalat as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Each day they have done something for the teachers to let them know that Dalat parents appreciate all that they do.

I thought I might simply list some of the things I appreciate about the teachers and staff at Dalat. The fact of the matter is not a day goes by where I do not see teachers going the extra mile for their students:
  • Staff who are willing to give up their vacation time to coach a team at a tournament or chaperone an Impact trip to another country.
  • Teachers giving up their Saturdays and time off to give mock exams in preparation for the upcoming AP tests.
  • Teachers investing in the lives of our students through mentoring during their lunch break.
  • All the clubs, teams, and activities that only take place because our teachers and staff are willing to give of their time and energy to make them happen.
  • Dorm staff and teachers supervising open campus on Friday nights.
  • All the grading and lesson preparation that takes place on Saturdays and Sundays so that classes for the students are engaging and challenging each school day.
  • All the activities that the dorm parents plan for holidays and long weekends for our residence life students
This list could go on for pages if I included everything our staff do for our students. These are just some examples of them living out the theme “It’s Still Not About Me.” They live it out every day and model it for our students. It is from a heart to serve and impact the lives of students that our teachers exemplify the theme.

I want to thank the PTO for all that they have done this week. It has been an encouragement to the staff in many different ways and demonstrates that Dalat is indeed a special place.

Have a great day and May the 4th (Star Wars Day) be with you,

Karl Steinkamp

 5月9日(星期三)马来西亚选举日放假一天,校园运作时间将从上午11点至下午5点30分
大选的隔天(5月10日)可能会放假一天,但是学校照常上课

Dalat will cancel classes on Wednesday, 9 May to allow for Malaysian families to vote in the General Election. Campus hours will be 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Staff members will be working on campus periodically throughout the day.

Classes will resume on Thursday, May 10. We have been informed that another public holiday may be announced following the election, but school will continue as planned on May 10 regardless. Dalat’s absence policy allows parents to keep their children out of school at their own discretion for a certain number of days per term. Parents will decide whether to take this day as an absence or send their children school, if a holiday is announced.

Change in Campus Access For Construction on 26th May
5월 26일, 공사 관련 학교 이용 안내
5月26日(星期六)起,校园前门通道将关闭,所有出入/接送将改道至upper field,直至新学年开始恢复通行

Please be aware that a major campus access change will take place at the end of May. Beginning on Saturday, 26th May, no cars or people will be allowed to enter campus through the front gate because of the demolition of the high school buildings and construction of the new parking lot. ALL entrance to the school campus must come through Upper Field, including all car drop off and pickups and anyone walking on to campus.

Regular campus access through the front gate will resume in August for the new school year.

HS Moving & Final Exam Details You’ve Been Waiting For…
고등학교 교실 이전  & 학기말 시험 세부 사항
高中生的搬迁及年终考试

Dear HS parents and students,

Great news! The Harbor construction is on schedule and the interior work is nearing completion. We will need to move into the Harbor very quickly so that the old buildings can be torn down to allow for parking lot construction during the summer. Because of the move, important changes are being made to the schedule in the final week that you need to know.

May 23rd and 24th (Wednesday and Thursday) will be review for final exams scheduled for the following week. Students will be asked to clear out of their lockers by Thursday so that their lockers can be moved into the new building. Therefore, they will not have a locker on campus during finals week.

Friday, May 25th (the last regularly scheduled school day before final exams) will be a very different day for HS students. Seniors will spend the morning preparing for their baccalaureate ceremony and for the Senior Chapel. Students in grades 9-11 will not have classes on this day.

Instead, on 25th May at 8am students are encouraged to come to campus to help move from the old buildings into the new. Please note that while students can come and help, attendance is not mandatory and no attendance will be taken. The only students that should come to campus on this day are those that want to be involved and are excited and willing to work hard! This morning will be great for our community, and participation by all, including parents, is encouraged.

The afternoon of 25th May at 1:30pm features the traditional “Senior Chapel”. All students (regardless of helping with the move or not) are invited to attend this event where the Seniors will speak a few wise words to their classmates before they graduate.

The HS classrooms will be torn down on the first day of final exams, (Monday, 28th May). This means that both the HS and the MS will share the middle school classrooms during the week of HS finals.  Middle school will have a half day schedule in the morning.  High School will have no school in the morning of finals, and exams will be in the MS classrooms in the afternoon.  Here is the High School final exam schedule.  Because of the modified schedule, students who do not have a regularly scheduled exam during any block will not be required to stay on campus for a study hall as in prior years. The library will be available for a quiet study space, but students are allowed to be at home both in the morning and during any empty testing block. Please ask teachers or contact me if you have questions!

Fourth Grade Parent Night
4학년 학부모의 밤
Parents of current fourth grade students are invited to a Middle School Orientation on Thursday, 10 May, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel. The students have already had a brief orientation to middle school, and this is your opportunity. We will share with you the changes you can expect in the middle school program at Dalat, including grades and report cards.

We will also share some of our insights into the changes your child faces as they enter adolescence. We will also set aside time for you to ask all of your questions about middle school. We hope to see you there!

We want to celebrate good news with the community about the great work in our Fine Arts Music Program. We are very proud of all our students and the levels that they have achieved!

Primary Music Festival was held between five international schools in Penang at Tenby International School last weekend.  It was a great success and a wonderful musical experience for our students in Grades 3, 4 and 5. In the “Penang’s Got Talent” event, Ting Yi Huang in Grade 5 won with his amazing talent on the drums.

During the AIMS young Musicians Award at Nexus International School Putra Jaya this weekend, Tiffany Ang in grade 3 won 1st Prize in Category A. She gave a flawless performance, singing with such passion that impressed the judges.

Be part of something great! Dalat is looking for a varsity boys basketball coach for the 2018-19 season, which runs from November-February. One of the school’s premier sports programs needs a leader to develop players and help the team reach new heights at the ACSC level. The coach will be responsible for overseeing all boys basketball teams, planning practice, managing games, communicating with parents, and traveling to tournaments, among other duties. The time commitment during the season includes 4 practices and usually one game. The schedule is flexible, but mostly between 4–7 p.m. on weeknights.

Candidates must have at least varsity basketball playing experience and 2 years coaching experience. Benefits include all-expenses paid travel for tournaments including ACSC in Seoul, Korea, coaching apparel, gift vouchers, free meals, and more.
