Maker Faire UK celebrates 10-year anniversary

Crowds flocked to Life Science Centre on the weekend of 28 – 29 April, with visitors keen to try a wide palette of creative skills at Maker Faire UK. The two-day festival of crafting, coding and garden shed inventing, which first launched at Life 10 years ago, welcomed more than 450 Makers who shared their creative talents with the public.

Visitors were invited to have a go at crafts like blacksmithing and glass blowing; take the controls in the Robot Arena; and paint with light on the Waterlight Graffiti wall.

Take a look at the images below and this ITV News report for a flavour of the event.

I would like to thank the headline supporters for Maker Faire UK 2018: Reece Foundation, Northumbria University and Make: makezine.com. And also a thank you to the gold level supporters Arrow and DesignSpark.

New high for Easter visitor numbers

Life Science Centre was the place to be during the Easter school holidays, with almost 21,000 people visiting over the two weeks – an impressive 10% increase on its previous record for the Easter break.

Visitors enjoyed workshops on the science of chocolate – a perennial favourite at Life. The Easter holidays also offered visitors a last chance to see the long-running Dino Jaws exhibition, which had been at Life Science Centre since May 2017.

Mission takes schools from Newcastle's West End to Mars

Life was awarded funding by the Platten Family Trust to launch a series of Mission to Mars outreach workshops for children in primary schools in the West End of Newcastle.

In Mission to Mars, students enjoyed a show in an inflatable pop-up planetarium and a session on how to programme explorer robots to move, avoid obstacles and search for minerals on the Red Planet.

Life has now delivered the workshop to every Year 6 class in the primary schools that form the West End Schools' Trust. The workshop will now be brought in-house and included in Life's programme of robot-themed school workshops throughout the run of the blockbuster exhibition Robots - then and now.

Funding success for prostate cancer study at Life

Prostate Cancer UK has awarded £340,000 to a research team at Newcastle University, led by Dr Jennifer Munkley from the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Life, to test a new technique which could lead to better diagnosis and treatment of aggressive prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer cells are surrounded by groups of sugars called glycans and previous studies have suggested that removing these sugars could trigger cancer cell death. The new study will investigate why this reaction occurs and how it can be harnessed to develop new treatments and methods to diagnose aggressive prostate cancers.

The funding is part of Prostate Cancer UK’s Research Innovation Awards scheme, which encourages researchers to develop forward thinking, ambitious research proposals that challenge the status quo.
