SOAP Box May 2018

It's May, and our final performance of the season has staged.  Or has it?  Though our run in the south is complete, we have at least one more performance of Outside Mullingar to take place at the 2018 OZone Drama Festival.  Read on to learn more about OZone, an update on our 2018-19 season, the announcement of our final casting event before AGM and more...
CASTING CALL - MAY AND JUNE 2018
Directors Trevor Leigh and Nathan Linders are eager to start looking for talent, new and old, for next year's winter and spring shows.

For the next several weeks the directors will be scouring the south looking for six males and two to five female actors to get involved in two very exciting productions.

Our winter show will be Beyond Therapy directed by Linders.  He says "When upscale New York's two least license-worthy therapists inadvertently send two patients on a collision course, the unintended consequences of the worst blind date ever disrupt the lives of everyone involved, even the therapists themselves.  Can these two therapists, their patients, and two hapless bystanders overcome their hang-ups, or are they Beyond Therapy?"

Nathan is looking for four men and two women.  He hopes to find three men and one woman under 35 and another man and woman under 50 to play the therapists in this hilarious Broadway success.  "Be prepared to follow in some big footsteps," Nathan says, "You'll be cast in a Broadway hit which has featured Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, and John Lithgow.  Only people who enjoy laughing need apply!"
Our spring show, intended to be our entry in the 2019 OZone Festival, is Lawrence and Holloman, directed by our award winning Trevor Leigh.  It is the dark and twisted story of a cynical and suicidal accounting clerk (Holloman) who gets taken under the wing of a happy-go-lucky, ever-optimistic suit salesman (Lawrence). Lawrence the optimist tries to teach Holloman the pessimist how to live happily and remain positive, until his own good luck starts to turn. Lawrence's fiancee dumps him, his car is demolished, his dog goes missing, he loses his job, and his apartment is burned to the ground... and that's just the beginning! Is happiness determined by our outlook on life or can our destiny be changed by another?  The play is written by Vancouver’s own two-time Governor General Award-winning writer Morris Panych.

We consider this casting event to be on as of now and we are planning readings to take place on Saturday and Sunday June 9th and 10th from 1 pm to 4 pm.  If interested, please email Nathan and or Trevor at nlinders@eastlink.ca or ftleigh@mac.com respectively for more information and to arrange a reading.

Casting for A Wonderful Life will take place in the Autumn but hopefuls should consider attending the spring event.

OZone Bound!

SOAP Theatre began participating in festival in 2016 by hosting the festival right here in Oliver.  Go big or go home, we say, and last year we took our entry to Salmon Arm where we came in runner up for best production, as well as winning awards for best new actor, best sound design and the backstage cooperation award.  If you have been out to see Outside Mullingar, perhaps you will share our optimism that SOAP will win awards three years in a row.   Best of luck to the production team behind Outside Mullingar!

Call For Directors

Calling all directors or would be directors!  SOAP needs you to step up and bring us your favourite scripts.  We are now seeking show ideas for the 2019-20 season and beyond.  Here is how it will work:
  • You have a script you love.  Email the board.
  • the board will provide you with a list of producers.
  • You will reach out to the producers of your choice.  Remember that producers are likely to run only one show per year, or less.... if one is committed or otherwise unable to commit, move on to another producer.  We hope to have between four and eight names on our list.
  • Once you have the support of a producer, they will arrange to attend an upcoming board meeting to pitch your show.  You might want to be prepared to attend and support your project.
Be prepared to be patient.  This is brand new and we may need time to help you find producers  The goal is to have seasons planned much further in advance, and to provide some more variety in our offerings and make room on the stage for more people.

We dare you!
I WANT TO DIRECT A SHOW

2018 Annual General Meeting

Our AGM is scheduled for Thursday, June 14 2018.  All are invited to attend.  Elections to the board will be held.  You are reminded that if you wish to vote or stand for office, you must be a member in good standing by no later than May 14 2018.  Email here if you are unsure of your membership status or to apply for membership.

2018 SOAP AGM
Quails Nest Art Centre, Big Blue

6:00 pm Potluck
7:00 pm Meeting

Voting members should watch their inboxes for important details regarding a special resolution to be tabled at the upcoming AGM.  As we are working to plan seasons further in advance it has occurred to us that longer terms might be appropriate to ensure at least some of the directors and executive are still in office to preside over the commitments made by previous planning committees.  The proposal will include an expansion to two year terms and a process by which the board will have positions alternating so that only half the positions come up for election in any one year.

That's it!!

This is the last regular newsletter for the 2018-19 season.  Don't worry, you'll get one or two specials this month when we fill you in on the results of the festival, and we'll be bugging you one more time to come out and audition for next season's crazy shows.
The idea of acting put butterflies in your stomach?  You can still get involved.  Come to AGM and find out how you can contribute, or why director Tom Szalay is calling our Christmas show a "gateway production" for those of you afraid to memorize lines.
