Report: Yarra Bay ANZAC Day Regatta

Four Wetas arrived at Yarra Bay Sailing Club overlooking Botany Bay, the container terminal and the flightpath to Sydney airport. So while it may not be the most attractive location, the water is clean and clear and the breakwater provides a great flat water sailing area. You can also drive the trailer right onto to the beach via a concrete slip and the sailing club has a club licence with a dining room.
The only problem was that the regatta which was advertised on their website wasn't happening - however, they set a course with a wing mark for the few boats that were there and we organised our own mini-Weta championship with one person starting the countdown.
The first race had Ian and Peter dicing it out for the lead with a distance back to Paul who had a similar lead over Geoff. The second race was quite different as we'd all decided it paid to hug the shoreline where there was generally more pressure. Only it didn't quite work out that way -  especially for Peter.
Ian and Peter were first off the line at the pin end and slowed each other up enough so that Paul came over the top until he eventually tacked away while after forcing the others into the sheltered area near the shore. Geoff had decided to tack early and go further out but Peter tacked back in followed by Paul who got him on a port and starboard after Peter had a poor tack. Ian had managed to get away and was first around the windward mark followed by Geoff, Peter and Paul.
Peter managed to catch Geoff as they headed for the wing mark but they slowed as they neared the mark and Paul had a gust which allowed him to catch up just before the 3 boat lengths circle and obtain an overlap on Peter. Paul gybed as they entered the circle and Peter, who had gybed wide, came in at speed and tried to squeeze between Paul and the mark but Paul shut the door and so Peter was forced to tack away and round the mark after Geoff.
Paul managed to keep a slight lead heading for the leeward mark and furled the kite early to allow him to make a clean rounding  - meanwhile Peter had come in hot to the mark to round ahead but failed to get his kite to wrap properly leaving it flapping in the breeze so he was forced to turn down and re-furl putting Paul back ahead - although still some distance behind Ian. Although Peter managed to get back past Geoff, Ian and then Paul finished the race ahead. The finial race had Peter getting ahead after the start which he was able to maintain for the entire race followed by Ian at some distance and then Paul and Geoff.

Peter Hackett reviews the new Foam Core Weta

Multihull expert, Peter Hackett, reviews the new, lighter, foam-core, Performance Weta in the Cooloola Bay Regatta at Tin Can Bay, QLD:
"The improvements are certainly worth the dollars.....Let me put it this way, the boat feels crisper, not necessarily faster but just crisper"
"The racing was so close; it was like being in lasers again without the bucket out the back, and without the spinal pain. The time I most love my newer boat is when pulling the whole shebang back up the ramp after a great day’s sailing. The new girl is just a little easier to pull."  More here

Cooloola Cup Regatta

Eleven Wetas turned out for the Cooloola Cup Regatta at Tin Can Bay, QLD - making the Weta the largest fleet in the 21-boat entry.
(Report: Hamish Urquhart | Photo: Julie Hartwig)
Saturday had a fresh and gusty Westerlies which made for a good ride on the long race to Inskip point and return (13 miles). Peter Hackett in his new Foam Core boat and Glen cleared out and the rest of us swapped the lead back and forth. Peter came in first followed by Glen then myself closely followed by Andres. We followed that with a short race which Glen again won followed by Rod Daley, myself and Peter. Sunday was brilliantly sunny and a very light wind which totally dropped out about start time. We all ended up paddling over to the sandbanks watching the ebb tide and waiting for a breeze which didn’t come. Eventually racing was abandoned and we had to walk our boats about a mile back through the shallows then paddle across the creek to get home, or at least Peter and I did and the others ended up getting a tow.
In the overall results Glen won the regatta, Peter Hackett can third and I came fourth. In the Wetas it was Glen, Peter and myself. No apparent difference between boats but my new jib did seem to give me a bit extra. A good weekend even if Sunday was a wash out.

The Pittwater Sailboat Expo was a great success with over 30 new prospects requesting more information or a demo sail on the Weta. Expect to see more Wetas in NSW soon.

Zhik Dinghy Smock

It may look like fetish wear but Zhik's new Dinghy Smock is made from a high-stretch, breathable, waterproof shell that offers protection from wind, waves and spray.

The stretchy fabric ensures the smock fits comfortably over your other sailing gear, and moves with you keeping your movement around the boat free and unrestricted. It's only available in black which may not be the safest colour in a crowded waterway and could be hot on warm days.

How to attach fittings to a carbon tube

Drilling a hole in a carbon tube, like the mast or rudder, can create a point of weakness and stainless steel rivets may damage the thin carbon walls in the process of application. Also carbon and stainless steel react to create galvanic corrosion which can cause the steel to be eaten away - especially in the presence of salt water. So you have to be careful when adding or replacing fittings on the mast or rudder. Details of the options here
