MAY 2018

FREDERICK HAMMERSLEY GIFT
FREDERICK HAMMERSLEY FOUNDATION

We are delighted to have received a substantial gift of 57 computer-generated drawings from the Frederick Hammersley Foundation. Hammersley created the drawings in 1969, not long after moving from Los Angeles to Albuquerque to teach at the University of New Mexico, where he used the university's new IBM mainframe computer to generate geometrical compositions. The computer program ART I had been developed by Richard Williams in the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, containing approximately 350 statements in FORTRAN IV. Hammersley made his drawings using the 26 letters of the alphabet, 10 numerals, and 11 symbols, creating seemingly endless combinations.
