WOODCLIFF MESSENGER MAY 4, 2018

I encountered Charlotte, looking quite cheerful, wearing her sun hat inside in the office on Wednesday, May 2. Upon asking her why, she reminded me that it is ‘Hats On! For Mental Health Day in Alberta’. Alberta Education invited everyone to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. Schools encouraged students and staff to wear hats and to engage in conversations focused on understanding mental health and the importance of removing stigma associated with mental illness.

When I went home, I put on a hat for the rest of the day. This is something I can totally get behind. One in five of us are impacted by depression, anxiety, addictions and the myriad of other mental health problems. That means that virtually every family is dealing with the issues of mental illness either personally or with a family member.  The simple act of listening and walking with someone helps so much. All of us can benefit by celebrating, promoting and acknowledging the role that good mental health plays in living a full and meaningful life.

The Canadian Mental Health Association says: Mental health is about more than being happy all the time. It’s about feeling good about who you are, having balance in your life, and managing life’s highs and lows. Let's find ways to support one another so that everyone can feel good about who they are. Let's make our church a place where it is safe to be who we are, talk about the things that challenge us and to ask for the support we need. Let's make Woodcliff United a stigma-free zone. Let's celebrate the steps we've already made by offering the Dementia Caregivers Support Group.

Next week, May 7-13 is Mental Health Week in Canada. Visit their website to learn more. https://mentalhealthweek.ca/ The Calgary branch is very active and offers many great programs. http://cmha.calgary.ab.ca/

Jesus says: This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. We are each loved deeply and completely just exactly as we are. From that place of being loved, let's reach out and love one another in the very best ways we can. We can make a difference!

We are together on the journey.

Meet our New Minister!
                                                                  Rev. Eric Pagé and Michelle

I grew up in the small town of Huntingdon, which is about an hour south of Montreal.  Growing up in a rural community instilled in me my love for country music; and my proximity to Montreal means that I am a devout Montreal Canadiens fan.  I was involved with Scouting for almost two decades, as I worked at a Cub camp and taught canoeing and overnight camping.  Hiking and camping remain part of my hobbies to this day.

On June 9th, I will be marrying my fiancée Michelle, who has skated with the national team in short track speed skating.  I am looking forward to introducing you to her in more detail once we have arrived in Calgary.

My academic background is in history, specifically ancient Greek and Roman history. I received my Bachelor of Arts prior to my theological education.  My seminary work was completed at The United Theological College in Montreal.

A couple of my interests over the past year has been in the areas of discipleship and the language we use to discuss the Christian faith.  My supervisor at Grace United Church in Sarnia is the author of “Already Missional”, which has given me opportunities to understand how mission and evangelism can work in The United Church of Canada.  I am looking forward to living out ministry together as part of Woodcliff United Church.

Rev. Eric will be joining us July 1st, 2018.

Meet our New Youth Coordinator!

Hello, Woodcliff! My name is Nicole Macmillan, a Nova Scotian studying School & Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary. After returning to the United Church last May in Nova Scotia, I found myself wanting to become more involved in my faith community--so here I am! I'm so excited to join this community and feel so blessed to call myself the Coordinator of Youth Ministry at Woodcliff United Church. I look forward to getting to know everyone and already feel so welcome here. Come on over and say hello!

Nicole will be joining us starting May 13, 2018.

MINUTE FOR MISSION

A new Approach to Farming

Our gifts for Mission & Service change lives around the world. Our global partner the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) is addressing the problem of severe drought by creating a conservation agriculture program. The conservation agriculture model uses mulching, crop rotation, and minimal tilling, combined with water harvesting and management, to move toward the ultimate goal: local food security.

The NCCK works with Kenya’s National Drought Management Agency and advises the agency of needs in drought-stricken areas. The agency then reports to the national government on areas where help is needed. The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) is doing trials and experiments on technologies in partnership with the NCCK to determine the varieties of drought-tolerant maize and legumes that are the most suitable for growing in parts of Kenya. The NCCK/ KALRO partnership started as a result of Mission & Service support of conservation agriculture. Now they share best practices and enjoy a collaborative work relationship.

Farmers appreciate the support this project has received from Mission & Service. In Tharaka Nithi County, a place characterized by perpetual food insecurity, more than 800 households have participated in the conservation agriculture project. These households “will forever be grateful to the partnership between NCCK and The United Church of Canada,” says the NCCK’s General Secretary Peter Karanja.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
