From the Desk of Mr Mike Thiel- Executive Headmaster
and Dr Graeme Edwards - Preparatory Headmaster

Dear St David’s School community,
Welcome back to the winter term! Term 2 is filled with its own specific energy in both College and Prep, and after a well-deserved rest, what a joy it has been to once again hear our school’s corridors filled with the energy and chatter of returning boys and staff. It is in one’s pausing and listening, that one’s attention is once again drawn to the unique energy that is St David’s. Be it in the cheerful chatter of innocent Grade 00 boys at play - to the deep baritone voices of our senior boys talking about the next winter fixture - there runs a magical thread through the school.
This magical thread is what drew most of us to this community, to work, to study, to volunteer, and to support our boys… and part of its magic is that we know this thread links so much together and is something we want for ourselves and for our boys, but it is incredibly hard to see or define. What is it? Where does it come from, and how are we going to weave it into this new term that we are embarking on?
St David’s is immersed in the Marist charism, a tradition which has existed for over 200 years – one which has certainly stood the test of time. The core values of simplicity, modesty and humility together with the features of ‘presence’, ‘love of work’, ‘in Mary’s way’, and ‘family spirit’ are the fibres that bind our endeavours together. It is this sense of history, these Marist values, and being part of a bigger whole that not only reminds us of what it means to be a Marist school, but also what we want to build into the character of our boys. Indeed, this is our daily call for duty, purpose and meaning.
The magical Marist thread is personified through the daily lived experience of the boys in our care. Although the educational experience of boys may differ according to their specific age and phase of education, the Marist thread connects the entire school. It is for this reason that we strive to use a ‘common language of values and principles’ throughout the school. In addition to a common language, we try to show these underpinning values and principles in our words, actions and policies. This is achieved in part by the design of integrated programmes, and through communication and collaboration between sections of the school and departments within the school. It is also achieved by valuing the humanity in every person, and realising that without working together our efforts will be minimised.
A family who recently accepted a place in Grade 8 summed it up well, in saying that every person they interacted with at St David’s, from the boy who showed them around at Open Day, through the admissions process, the interview, and the follow-ups spoke the ‘same language’ of care, of excellence and of commitment in what they said and in what they did. This is the magical thread that this place uses to bind us together, this is the unseen thread that few schools can emulate, and this is what makes our schoolboys the quality men they become in adult life.
By comprehending the complete Marist journey of each boy, we acknowledge the specific work done and guidance provided within each unique phase of a boy’s development. Regardless of where your boy’s journey commences, our ultimate goal is for our boys to leave St David’s as men of sound character, respectful of themselves and others, faithful in work and relationships; and of course with an excellent education!  In as much as this journey is linked to the magical Marist thread, it is not magical in a whimsical way. It requires time, input, commitment, effort and resources. It is reliant on parental support, community interest and above all, God’s grace. We invite you to continue our journey together this term, and ask that you keep all our boys, your son’s teachers, our administration staff and the school leadership team in your prayers. We wish you a happy, successful and meaningful term ahead.

FIRST TEAM TOUR TO IRELAND by Johan Black

The First Rugby team is happy to be home after a very successful Ireland tour. The team has done both themselves and the St David’s community proud; both on and off the field.
The boys were exposed to the best and the worst weather that Ireland can offer. From gale-force winds to side-way rains to sunshine. But these conditions didn’t stop the boys from playing excellent rugby and explore the beautiful country.
The tour kicked off with a narrow loss to Cill Dara RFC. The boys learned valuable lessons about how to play in the Irish conditions. The disappointment of the first loss was quickly forgotten by a convincing victory over Galwegian RFC. The game of the tour was most definitely against a very strong Garryowen Football Club; a traditional club founded in 1884. The first team overcome a 15-point deficit to ultimately win the game 29 – 25! A truly remarkable performance. The boys ended the tour with a clinical performance to beat High School Clonmel, a fitting way to end the tour.

RESULTS:
Cill Dara RFC lost 21 – 19
Galwegians RFC won 0 – 59
Garryowen Football club won 25 – 29
High School Clonmel won 0 – 22

Not only will the boys remember all these games but they will remember all the wonderful places they visited. The country side of Ireland is truly magnificent; offering many great sightseeing opportunities. I am sure the boys will always remember the boat trip back from Inis Oir Island!

We would like to thanks all the parents who made it possible for the boys to be part of this wonderful experience. It was lovely to have parents on the tour with us as well. Your support next to the field was much appreciated.

CANOEING

On the first Sunday of the school holidays, the 15 April, our boys participated in the first of the marathon races for the season at Florida Lake Canoe Club.  The U8 and  U 10 boys paddled 2kms around the lake. The U10 and U12 races were dominated by St David’s who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  The U10 race was won by Matthew Wilson, 1st place, Jess Webber 2nd place and Luke Wilson 3rd place.  The U12 boys paddled 4 kms around the dam. First place was Theo Dreyer, 2nd Jordan Klopper and 3rd Alex Renouprez and 4th place Tomé dos Santos. The U14 race paddled 6kms around the lake Theo Dreyer, who is U12, also paddled in this race and came 2nd  he was closely followed by Nicholas Erwee who came 3rd.

This was a tremendous start to the marathon season and we are extremely proud of the boys. We were very lucky with the weather because in the past the weather has always been freezing cold or blowing gales.  On race day in the morning the sun was out, the sky was a clear blue and there was only a hint of a wind on the water.  An hour after we had all packed up and gone home, the heavens opened up and it poured with rain. The weather was most certainly on our side and smiling down on the canoeists that morning.

2018 Konka Rugby Camp

The Preparatory School’s rugby hopefuls attended our annual Rugby camp this year at Konka near Rustenburg over the weekend of 27 – 29 April 2018. The usual excitement and anticipation accompanied the boys as they arrived at school on the morning of the 27th to get on the busses. We arrived at Konka in time for lunch. The first practice commenced shortly after lunch with some strenuous fitness sessions and skills training. This year, the Grade 4’s joined us again and they were ecstatic to experience the healthy rugby culture which we foster at St. David’s.

The second day of camp started with an early morning fitness session conducted by our physio, Mr. Archer followed by breakfast and then further training. Lazy holiday muscles were straining by now, but the boys quickly realised that it is time to wake up and prepare for the upcoming season. Day 3 of camp started with another early morning fitness session, followed by breakfast and a short wrap-up session. The busses arrived back at Inanda by 12:00 on Sunday, 29 April.

The Grade 7 team went to rugby camp at the back of a very successful festival pre-season and they could reactivate their aching muscles after the much-needed rest that the April holidays offered. The weekend truly lived up to its reputation of preparing all the boys thoroughly for the gruelling upcoming season. The season is going to be a very tough one, but I believe that our boys will be a cut above our opposition, because of the time spent on the field during this camp.
Grade 7 Camp 2018

The St David’s Grade 7s have been attending their annual class camps at the tried and tested Camp Konka, at the foot of the Magaliesberg, for many years now.  This year’s Grade 7 boys thoroughly enjoyed their stay and the accommodation and food was as excellent as always.

Our young men really impressed with their attitude and behaviour.  The boys willingly and enthusiastically participated in all of the activities including the dreaded Mudstacle course.  It was impressive to see how the boys (excuse the pun!) threw themselves into this most testing of challenges. Their mothers would have been horrified to witness it.

Much fun was had and the experience was character developing and unifying.  The boys returned to school tired, contented and still a little muddy.

REFLECTION

The Lord is truly risen, Alleluia.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord, Alleluia.

God’s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ; is it by God’s grace that you have been saved.  In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world.  Eph 2:4-6.
Let us pray:
Since it is from you, God our Father, that redemption comes to us, your adopted children: look with favour on the family you love, give true freedom to us and to all who believe in Christ, and bring us all alike to our eternal heritage.  We  make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MySchool Card
NOW AVAILABLE IN APP FORM

MySchool Card has, for many years, been one of the best and most consistent sources of funds for the St David’s PTA.  Receiving income from MySchool Card requires no effort on the PTA’s part and yet it typically draws in R 25 000-R 30 000 per month.  Obviously, the PTA’s success with MySchool Card is dependent on our parents making St David’s one of their MySchool Card beneficiaries, and on them shopping at MySchool Card partners.

Further information and MySchool Card application information can be found on the St David’s App, under the PTA section.  However, you can also just register on-line by CLICKING HERE  or you can download the MySchool App from the relevant App Store.

We use these funds for the betterment of our school, with our most recent project including new Junior Prep readers, and upcoming, a Science Lab for the Prep School.
