EU, People, and Privacy

Standards organizations should be aware that effective May 25 of 2018, the new European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires that organizations obtain consent from all participants who are EU “data subjects” (even if the organization does nothing in the EU) for the use of their personally identifying information. This includes names, contact information, and email addresses. This would imply that normal distribution lists and other information may not include those folks unless you have positive consent. Standards organizations should evaluate their privacy policies and consult their legal staff as to the things they need to do if they have any participants who reside in Europe. Note that the fine for violations can be up to 20 million Euros or four percent of worldwide revenue.
SES Member Spotlight

The Society for Standards Professionals (SES) is seeking SES Member volunteers to discuss how they became a member, what standards development means to them, and how the SES has contributed or played a part in their professional development. Volunteers will be asked to complete a short one page survey and if chosen, will be included in a future SES News posting.

To request a copy of the Member Spotlight Survey, Contract Mike Morrell, SES Executive Director, Mikemorrell@live.com
The SES Standards Committee is developing an SES 2 standard which provides guidance to standards development organizations, trade associations, government agencies, companies and any others involved in the development of standards. It addresses the essential due process requirements for the development, revision, reaffirmation and withdrawal of standards in the form of a model procedures guide. To find our more, contact SES Executive Director Mike Morrell mikemorrell@live.com
