Keeping you informed about cool bird stuff in & near central Kentucky.                     May 2018

More Prothonotary Tubes Placed
Last month, CKAS gathered to build seventy-five more Prothonotary Warbler (PROW) nesting tubes, with the intent of setting these out by ourselves with landowners who have volunteered to watch and maintain them. Some people who attended the build took a few nest tubes to try on their own property along creeks and near ponds or rivers and we've begun placing them at the other properties that had already requested them. We have just over a dozen set out and have several more to go. (Big thanks to everyone who has inquired; if you don't have your tube yet, we'll get to you!)

If you have a swampy or water-side area on your property and might not mind hosting and monitoring a tube, please let us know. If you would be willing to help place them, let us know that, too, since we're finding that distribution is the most difficult link in our 100% volunteer chain. It's a great opportunity for you to help a species of concern both in Kentucky and nationally.

Endow Kentucky Tax Credit Re-Funded
State legislators have re-authorized the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit, funding it with $1 million. Unlike regular tax deductions, tax credits are taken off a donor’s tax bill dollar for dollar, so a donation to CKAS during the July window can receive an extra 20% of the value of the gift (up to $50,000) directly off your Kentucky taxes. Depending on your tax bracket, your Endow Kentucky donation to the CKAS Endowment Fund could have a net cost to you of only half of what you give.

In order to receive the credit, donors must get preapproved by July 1, 2018 using this application and making their contribution in early July through the Bluegrass Community Foundation. If you would like more information about this opportunity, information about the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit can be found here or you can e-mail President@CKAS.org or by calling the BGCF at 859-225-3343.  Donations made through the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit go directly to the growing CKAS Endowment, supporting our Chapter's future work.

The 5th Annual
Bluegrass Birding Festival

May 12th & 13th
at McConnell Springs

The Bluegrass Birding Festival is rapidly approaching! McConnell Springs maintains several bird feeders; the area has good trails and varied habitat, providing a good variety of species diversity. Several breakout sessions and birding trips are also planned.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is looking for bluebird box monitors who would be willing to collect the eggs of house sparrows they find nesting in their boxes and donate them to the museum's egg collection. Sparrows often destroy bluebird clutches and taking over the nests. The Museum will send you painted sparrow egg replicas to swap with the actual eggs, which keeps the sparrows committed to the nest attempt instead of disrupting any other nests. Scientists will analyze donated eggs for contaminants as part of research to determine whether house sparrow eggs are a useful bioindicator of exposure to environmental contaminants. More information on the project can be found here. Sparrow eggs are very delicate so watch the Museum's instructional video about collection and mailing techniques.
